EVENING STAR. "WASHINGTON CITY: SATURDAY.,...........-+s000.May 10, 1856. I[7~ Advertisements should be handed in by 12 o’elook, m., otherwise they may not appear until the next day. SPIRIT OF THE MORNING PRESS. The Jatelligencer contains no editorial to- day. The Union shows that the anti-Nebraska- Did] poljti¢&l leaders and press are responsible for the recent assassination of Sheriff Jones. —— WASHINGTON NEWS AND GOSSIP Ourself.—We take the following paragraph from the Washington Organ, newspaper, of yesterday. Assavit —The editor of the junior organ of the administration was severely caned by Major Heiss, late of the senior organ, yester- day afternoon, in front of Willard’s ‘Hotel. We did not learn the cause of the attack. We have to ssy that this statement is wholly destitute of foundation in truth The truth is as foliows, viz: On going into Willard’s to dinner on Thursday afternoon and passing iu front of tho office, we were overtaken by John P. Heiss, who has recent- ly returned from Nicaragua, (coming with the Padre Vigel accerding to the newspapers.) As be was paszing us we gave him a friendly salutation as usual, having been up to that moment on as friendly relations with him as with any man living, as far as we had any knowledge of his sentiments from his course towards us or otherwise. His reply to our salu- tation was an oath and a denuncation, follow- ed by a blow on the head from a heavy blud- geon which felled us to the ground. By- standers immediately rushed in, and the Hon. Mr. Spinner of New York, seized him by the arms bebind, holding him thus, whilo others, we know not whom, raised us up, covered with blood from the blow. To have properly retaliated even such a blow from a powerful man given under such circumstances, he being ip the hands of those who had interfered, would have deprived us of the plea of solf- defence, and subjected us to the charge of manslaughter, a position in which we were not disposed to place oureelf. On leaving the hotel, after cleansing the blood from our person and dining, we wore met by Officer Boss, who informed us that on going to the hotel shortly after this occurrence, he was met by the assailant, who remarked to him that he supposed be (the officer) ras looking for him; and that he answered that he (Hiess) had probably better go with hir. They proceeded immediately to the office of Justice Stevens, where J. P. Heiss gave bonds to answer at the Criminal Court for this act. ‘On that act we do not choose to make a com- ment, leaving the reader to judge of it from the facts we state above, and leaving the very appropriate tribunal before which itso prompt- ly found its way without our agency, to deal with it according to its judgment on its deserts. The Commissioner of Indian Affairs, Col Manypenny, the Hon. Mr. Spinner, and other gentlemen saw all that passed, and we refor to them as witnesses that we here only state the simple truth concerning the affair. We hear that we were thus aseailel for the publication of the following article, which ap- peared in the Stuy of the day before yester_ day - “Tre Pare Vicai.—We are not a little amused at the puffy notices of this gentleman with which the ot Press just now are filled. There seems to be no end to the wonderful steries concerning him the newspa- pers are manufacturing, the most amusing of which is, that he claims to be an Americ:n, rather than a Roman Catholic priest ; or, in other words, that he reouts the discip ine of the only Catholic Church known as the Catho- lie Church in Christendom—that is, the “‘ Ro- man Catholic Chureh.”” Without pretending to enter into a disquisition upon its claims to be the only real Carnolic Church, the intelli- gent and ll informed reader will bear us ssying that the priest who denies the binding force of its discipline is always de- Prived quickly of the fanctions of its winistry. The Padre Vigel, at home, was mixed up onary party, and became one of the few native partizans cf the fillibusters; going to the length of inviting the perform- ance of Protestant service in the church in Granada under astoral charge. Hed there e ecelesiastical authority icaragua during Walker's rule, of course the Padre V would have been deposed from bis living ag summarily as an Episcopalian minister awong us would be deposed for offering his pulpit to a Methodist. or a Baptist preacher for offering his to a Uni. tarian or Universalist. So he is, in the eyes of all trae Roman Catholics of every country, no longer entitled tu administer the functions of their priesthood. In this country, while the Catholics acknowledge no politic supre- macy in Kome, they all look to Rowe, and only to K for Ui eburcb discipline, as well as their ductrine ; and not amen of them i Paire V as g aught, ecclesiastically, than an unfrocked priest. We may truthfully add, that the eturies told in the pro-fillibustering newspapers of the great influence of this gentleman at home, bis re- iarkable talents, tc ,arc on a par with the bogus accounts of his prescnt position in the chureb. He way be a very worthy man per- sonally, for aught we know ; but we are ver: sure that up to the time he permitted his hatred for his Government to lead him to unfrock himself, he was quite as obscure as any other — in the city of Granada. All the fuss cing made over him, personally, in the news- papers is therefore mere humbuggery, “of a piece’’ with the accounts of the condition of things in Nicaragua which are transmitted irom thenee to aid the waning cause of the fillibusters.”’ In conclusion, we bave only to remark far- ther, that habitual mis-statements of the per- sonal affairs of parties opposed to it in politics, so grossly and maliciously false as this, (that makes it our duty to ourself to allude to the affeir in the Star) is one of the prime causes why the Washington Organ fails to enjoy the confidence, respect and patronage of its politi- cal friends in this community ; who preferring & manly opponent to a nominal friend so sneak- ing and disreputable in its practices, patronize the Scar ia its stead; until its (the Organ’s) ad- vertising business has fallen away to nothing, and ite circulation has so dwindled down, that according to a notice in its issue of yesterday, its agents in Washington are throwing up the management of their routes in disgust, as business that wont pay fur the shoe leather worn out in its prosecution. Mr. Haven's Letter. —The ietter from Mr. Haven, of the House of Representatives, just published, announcing that Mr. Fillmore wilt accept the Know Nothing nomination, beyond peradventure, and that he may be expected home in the course of the next month—June— is received with a bad grace by the Republi- cans of both Houses of Congress. The latter bad hoped, up to this time, that Mr. Fillmore would decline, and have encouraged the pub- lication in their party newspapers of all con- ceivable discouraging statements and prog: nostications designe? to thwke Mr. F. off the course.
