They consider only their own ideas of ingenuity ; and, in searching for hid- den, advert only to the modes in which the: would have hidden They are right in this much—that their own ingenuity is a faithful representative of that of the mass; but when the cunning of the individual felon is diverse in character from their own, the felon foi's them of course. This always happens when it is above theirown, and very usually when itis below. They have no variation of prin- ciple in their investigatione: at best, when urged by some unusual emergency—by some extraordinary reward—they extend or exag- gerate their old modes of practice, without touching their principles What, for exam. ple, in this case of D——, has been done to vary the principle of action? What is all this boring, and probing, and sounding, and Serutinizing with the microscope, and dividin, the surface of the building into registere square inches; which is at all but an exag- geration of the application of the one princi- ple, or sgt of principles of search, which are based upon the one set of notions regarding human ingenuity, to which the prefect, in the long routine of his duty, has been accustomed ? Do you not see he has taken it for granted that a// men proceed to conceal a letter—not exactly in a gimlet-hole- bored ina chair-leg —but at tin some out-of the-way hole or corner suggested by the same tenor of thought which would urge a man to secrete 2 letter in a gimlet-hole bored in a chair-leg? And do you not see, also, that such nooks for conceal- ment are adapted only for ordinary oce2- sions, and would be adopted only by ordinary intellects ; for, in all cases of concealment, a disposal of the article coneealed—a dispo- sal of it in this recherche manner—is in the very first instance, presumed and presumable; and thus its discovery depends not at all upon the acumen, but altogether upon the mere care, patience, and determination of the seck- ers; and where the case is of importance, or, and Lot on Sth street, between K and L, Lot fronting 25 feet, with a depth of 66 feet 8 inches Terms reasonable. You will now understand what I meant in fuggesting that, had the purlioned leiter beon hidden any where within the lim- its of the prefect’s examination—in other words, had the principle of its concealment been comprehended within the principles of the prefect, its discovery would have been a matter altogether beyond question. This func- tionary, however, has been thoroughly mysti- fied; and the remote source of his defeat lies in the supposition that the minister would do what he would have done himself—take yast care to conceal the letter on account of ite being so very precious. I went to work dif- ferently. My measures were adapted to the minister's capacity, with reference to the cir- cumstances by which he was surrounded. knew him as a courtier, too, and as a bold in- triguant. Such a man, I considered, could not fail to be aware of the ordinary policia! modes of action. He couid not have failed to anticipate—and events have proved that he did not fail to anticipate—the waylayings to Which he was subjected. He must have fore- secn, I reflected, the secret investigation ef his premises. His frequent absences from home at night, which were hailed by the pre- feet as certain aids to his success, [ regarded only as ruses, to afford opportunity for thor- ough search to the police, and thus the sooner to impress them with the conviction to which G—, in fact, did finally arrive—the convie- tion that the letter was not to be found upon the premises. “<I felt, also, that the whole train of thought which I was at some pains in detailing to you just now, concerning the invariable principle of political aetion in searches for articles con- cealed—I felt that this whole train of thought Glass Elegant Cottage Chamber Set, black and gilt, consisting of marble top Dressing Bureau, French Bedstead, ‘Table, 4 Chairs, marble- top Washrtard, Wardrobe, &c. To be sure, it was to all P ance radically different from the one of which © prefect had read us so minute a descrip- on Here the seal was large and black, with the D— cipher; there, it was small and red, with the ducal arms of the —— family. Here the address of the minister was dimin utive and feminine; there the super- seription, to @ certain royal personage, was markedly bold and decided; the size alone formed a point of correspondence. Bat then the radica/ness of these differences, which was excessive; the dirt, the soiled and torn condition of the paper, so inconsistent with the ¢rwe methodical habits of D—, and 80 su, of a design to delede the be- helder into an idea of the worthiessness of the document; these things, her with the hyper obtrusive situation of this document, fall in the view of every visiter, and thus ex actly in with the conclusions to which I had previously arrived—these things, I say, were strongly corroborative of suspi- cion, im one who eame with the intention to suspect. of pytrasted my visit as long as possible, and while I maintained a most animated dis- cussion with the minister upon a topie which I knew well had never failed to excite and interest him, I kept my attention really riv- eted upon the letter. In this examination 1 committed to memory its external appearance and arrangement in the rack; and also fell at length upon a discovery which set at rest whatever trivial donbed might have enter- tained. In scrutinizing edges of the paper, I discovered them to be more chafed than seemed necessary. They presented the dro- ‘en appearance which is manifested whon a stiff paper, havi: been once fulded and pressed with a folder, is refolded in a reyorse direction, in the samme creases or edges which had formed the original folds. This dis- covery was sufficient. It was clear to me that the letter had been turned, as a glove, inside out, re-directed, and re-sealed. I bade the misister good morning, and took my depar- ture at once, leaving « gold snuff-box upom the table - “The next morning I called forthe snuff- box, when we resamed quite ——e the conversation of the preceding day. hile thus engaged, however, a loud report, as if of a pistol, was heard immediately beneath the windows of the botel, and was succeeded bya series of fearful screams, and the shoutings of a terrified mob. D—— rushed to a case- ment, threw it open, and looked out. In the meantime, I stepped to the cardrack, took the letter, put it in my pocket, and replaced it by a sae simile, which I had caretully pre- pared at my lodgings—imjtaiing the D—— cipher very readily by means of a seal formed of bread. “The disturbance in the street had been occasioned by the frantic behavior of a man with a musket. He had fired it among a crowd of women and children. It proved. however, to have been without ball, and the fellow was suffered to gu his way us @ lunatic oradrunkard. When he had gone, came from the window, whither I had followed hit iminediately upon securing the object in view. Soon afterwards, 1 bade bim farewell The ,retended lunatic was a man in my own pay”? “But what purpose had you,”’ I asked. “in replacing the letter by a fuc-simile! Would it not have been better, at the first visit, to have eecured it openly, and departed ?”’ “ D—,” replied Dupia, + isa desperate man, and aman of nerve. You know my political prepossessions. in this matter Tact asa partisan of the lady con- cerned. For eighteen months, the minister has had her in his power. She has now him in hers—since, being unaware that the letter is not in his possession, he will proceed with his exactions as if it wore. Thus will be in- evitably commit himself at once to his politi- cal destruction. His downfall, too, will not be more precipitate than awkward. [t is all very well to talk about the faecalis descensus Averni: but in all kinds of climbing, as Ca- talani said of singing, it is far more easy to get up than to cove down. In the presentin- stance I have no sympathy—at least no pity —for him who descends. He is that monstrum horrendum, ax unprincipled man of genius. I confess, however, that I should like very well to know the precise character of his thoughts, when, being defied by ber whom the refect terms ‘‘a certain personage,’’ he is re- uced to opening the letter which I left for him in the card-rack.”” ‘‘ How? did you put anything particular in it?’ % ibe: it did not seem altogether right to leave the interior blank—that would have been insulting. For fifteen years, we have not permitted one to grow in our gar- den, or to a our table, eatlaie have found the advantage of pursuing this course in the improved health of our family. Man is the only animal that will eat a radish, either raw or couked. The sagacious hog will starve before he will eat the poisonous trash. Crude radishes is the most indigestil d be taken into the human stomach, independ- ent of the acrid, poisonous su’ they contain. But they do not burt me, exclaims one, I can eat them with impunity! and with arelish. But, dear reader, do you not have the headache, or a bad breath? Have youno doctor’s bills to pay? A radish eaten in the sprivg may cause 4 fever in the fall. Lf an one doubts the poisonous qualities of a ishes, let them cutin thin slices, three or four, and soak the slices in water for twelve hours, and then taste the water. Our word for it, they will never taste another radish.
