The depth of the store, from front to rear, is 75 feet; the width is 16 feet; the altitude of the ceiling, (which is arched,) is 15 feet. The front is composed of splendid British plate glass, 10 fect high. The ve is so arranged as to oe the proprietor @ view of the entire store; it is reached by an easy flight of circular stairs, which continue in spiral form to the fifth story, which is used as 4 ware room. The labaratory is in the fourth story. The clerks’ sleeping-room is in the third story, ever the office. The cellar extends from curb te curb, and is lighted by @lags an inch thick. set in the pavement. © whole of the work was designed and the building erected under the immediate Superinténdence of Mesars. It gives us great Pleasure to know that most of the beautiful Ornamental work is the handiwork of our own mechanics. The Messrs. Jones & Bureh the brick werk; Mr. W. Silvey plain plaster for the wre part of the building; Messrs. AN Onwawent to ovr Crry.—The brothers Willard, have done et least their chare this season, in the improvement of Washington City; their hotel, as it now stands, bei i the matter of the completeness of all its ar- rangements for the comfort of their guests, without @ superior in the land, while its ca- pacities have beem well nigh doubled. At Present itis arranged to accommodate $00 — without being over crowded; whereas, ast year 300 guests taxed it almost to its utmost capacity. With the new ‘Mansion House”’ addition, their fine pile of buiidings— four and five stories high—now stretches 461 feet on Penueylvania Avenue, and 215 feet on Fourteenth street, and presents one of the finest private architectural spectacles to be seen in this city of palaces; good taste and compieteness of finish, being marked features in its toute ensemdie. Oxp Sorpines.—The associated survivors of the war of 1812, of the District of Columbia, ere to hold a meeting at the City Hall on Wednesday ovening, for Lue purpose cf making j suitable arrangements to receive those soldiers ofthe Revolution who purpose to pay a visit We the seat of Government on the 14th of De- cember; slso, for tnking such measures as may be deemed necessary for the reception and ac- commodatiou of the national convention of soldiers of the war of 1312, called by the resident of the last convention, to assembloe in the city of Washington, in accordance with @ resolution, on the Sth of January uext. Sgriocs Accipext.—In consequence of the alteration of the grads of North Capitol street, it became necessary to underpin the four story residence of Mr. S. B. Anderson, oppovite the Washington House, on Capitol Hill. But not being properly protected before digging un- deraeath the north side, the walls, yesterday morning gave way. From competent exam- ination, it will be necessary to take down the entire house. The Ioss to the owner will be four or five thousand dollars. The person having the business ot underpinning in charce ‘was, we learn, reminded to be careful ix prose- euting the work. He went tote railroad depot this morning, and arrested J. P. Vallian who was accused. He gave his prisoner into officer Busher’s charge, and we have since learned that Vallian was sent to jail. Treascre Recoveren.—Some time ago, we stated in the Star, that a gentleman had been robbed on the Southern boat of a Gold Watch and Chain, valued at about two hun- dred and twenty-five dollars. Owing to the vigilance of officers Coxe and Wilson the prop- erty haz been recovered, and the thief, color- ed, held to bail for his appearance at Court, Racixe.—Last ht, several races took place in our most public streets; the eques- trians disregarding the municipal laws cn the subject of ‘‘fast driving.’ We would remind the gentlemen. who are, it is believed, etran- gersin the city, that their ‘sport’? may be spoiled by our vigilant police, asthey may be made to pay dearly for their illegal amuse- ment. Taz Kexxer Opera Trove opened their season at the Varieties, last night. A la auditory were in attendance to enjoy their fine voca! and instrumental music, and laugh at the utterance of their eide-aplittiog wiiti- cisws. They will perform again to-night, af- fording 2 diverting and innocent entertaia- ment. Centre Manxer.—A better and largersup- y than usual. Sales very rapid, Tices igh, as usual. The quantity in market is robably made necessary by the great num- , oe of strangers now in the city, and who in- tend to remain during the long session Bap Cct.—Officer Wise, while operating on s cutting box in his stable this morning, cut off the end of one of his fingers. We regret to learn that bis partner, officer Simonds, un- fortunately had a smash of his buggy. — Wrve.—Capt Jonas P.
