“Tar Vartere’’—Kuxxer & Co.—This 4ijou theatre has, during the past three weeks, “:ndergone s complete transformation, aud— newly pa: , redecorated, thoroughly reno- ed with every convenience which could enhance the enjoyment of its au- ditory—may now rank among the most beau- tiful and recherche places of amusement in the Union. It will be inaugurated for the dra- matic season on Monday evening, Nov. 19, by the jar star com) of the Holliday Street , Baltimore, in the ranks of whieh may be found the names of some of the most talented and artists this country bas ever produced; while as a unity they are mot excelled by any corps dramati the American can . The famed come- dian, Harry Chapman, and his dashing lady, the very embodiment of sparkling humor, are artists whose superiors might with modesty tay claim to the perfection of comic genius. Geo. C. Boniface, the leading male member, is destined at no very distant period toessume the mantle of American genius which the great Forest now so proudly wears. The press. of Baltimore, in which city they have per- formed for thirteen weeks with memorable suceess, laud the entire dramatic corps in terms of high and honorable praise; and we may with safety promiso our adasirers of the dranta all the enjoyment which the efforts of the best theatrieal company that has yet vis- ited them may confer. The plays—and we are assured they will be of a much higher standard than the catch-penny and high- fallutin school—will be presented in that style of care and elegant effect which has wen for the Holliday Street Theatre a reputa- tion for excellence unsurpassed by the most famed establishments of the country. The direction of this beautiful establishme:t is under tho sole control of Mr. J. T. Ford, than | whom, we need scarcely remind our citizens, a more enterprising or able caterer for public amusement is not known. His remarkable tact and intuitive perception of the means of success are peppy illustrated in the present bag of the Holliday Street Theatre, which, ‘or the first timo in its history since the regime of Wood & Warren—and after a like attempt under the management of Chas. Walcot, and sabsequently Mr. C. Bass, backed by an al- most inexhaustible capital, had made a signal failure—he has. by the sole exercise of his shrewd business enterprise and energy, raised te the dignity of one of the most successful theatres in the Union, and par excellence the leading theatre of the South. Of his brilliant success in this city there can exist no reason- sbledoubt. A theatre like his has become a popular dosideratum in our city, where plea- sure in its happiest ‘‘ varieties’ may be en- jeyed without moral detriment. ‘‘Brormerty Lovs.”—The discourse on this subject, last night, at the Methodist Epis- copal Caurch South, by the Rev. James A. Duncan, was listened to by a large congrega- tion, notwithstanding the threatening aspect of the clouds, portending a heavy fal! of rain Among the persons present were promi- nent members of the several benevolent os- sociations of Washington. The principles and and practice of the scriptural injunction were eloquently presented and enforced by the reverend gentleman; and the affecting narra- tive of Jonathan and David, showing firm and undeviating friendship, was instanced as a model of “love indeed andin truth.” He insisted that this principle and duty was un- derstood and practiced Before the New Testa- ment was written, and that it is an attribute of God. He likewise referred, in farther elu- eidation of his theme, to the parable of the good Samaritan, whose beneficent officesshould ever be cherished and regarded assn example Of world-wide imitation. Such appealsto the better feelings of our mature—the presentation of patterns of good works—the preacher ‘‘ speaking the truth in love,’’ and “stirring up pure minds by way of remembrance’’—are calulated to make fa- vorable impressions, and stimulate to the per- formance of those acts of charity, or love, which are demanded by an Authority whieh cannot be lightly disregarded. Counterrzits —Sevyeral days ago we re- ferred to the fact that in other cities counter- feiters were industriously engaged passing their spurious trash on unsuspecting people, our object being to sound the notes of warn- tag to our own inhabitants. We were not mistaken in our suspicions that some of the counterfeiting crew would resort to the metro- lis. Oo Thursday last, James M Cunningham and Washington Altemus, alias George Wash- | : ington Kans, were arrested by officers Davis, Handy, and Kembel, at the railroad station in this city, charged with passing counterfeit bank notes, and on Saturday were fully com- mitted for trial by Justice Hollingshead. The National Intelligencer of this morning, speaking on the subject says: ‘ A five-dollar note, purporting to be of a Frederick (Mary- Innd) Bank, was proven to have been passed by them. These men had been in Washing- ton for a number of days, having four or five confederates, with a large quantity of spurious bills; but it is probable that they and our police have been mutually watehing cach other, asthe latter have not been able to de- tect them in any other overt acts of fraud than that named above. It is presumed that they have fled; yet it would be well for our citi- »bserve narrowly the money they re- ceive. We are assured that they have had in their possession a large number of counter- feited notes of the ‘Bank of Commerce,’ of whatcity we know not.” ~~ & Story.—A lady in the Western market, on Saturday morning, in handling her purse, had the misfortune to drop a gold dollar into a basket containing twenty live chiekens ; when lo! one of the hungry tribe swallowed it forthwith. The lady stood aghast! she could not identify the chicken. There was a case. A by-stander, however, fixed on a large Dominica hen as “El Dorado; which the lady, reluctantly, but on the principle of true economy, goa and paid for. This re- minds us of the little girl at a Sunday school, whose name being called, her brotier sun out, “swallowed her money and gone home.’ Fimeuex’s Processtox.—The several fire companies are making arrangements for a gran! procession en [huraday next, on tho oc- casion of the reception, by the Metropolitan Hook and Ladder Company, of their truck, from Baltimore. With music, and banners, and apparatus, and the members dressed in i tyles of uniforms, the display _ doubtless te imposingly handsome, and creditable to that usefal and indispensable class of our citizens. Rosteny.—Tho boarding house of Mr. P. @. Murray, corner of Pennsylvania avenue and Four and-a-half street, was entered and robbed, this morning, of a large number of silver forks, salt, table, and tea-spoons, and knives. The Proprietor, who had been abse: in New York, returned to the premises to fin his front door open, and his property stolen. Taz Koyxar Or . zx Trovrs will give the first of theiz series of Concerts to-night at Odd Feilows’ Hall Tho moro announcement is sufficient, without one word in comme: dation of this favorite and doservedl: popular corps, who are always welcome with a Washington auditory. Tax Manion Rirces wereon parade to-day, accompanied by a full bandof music. A boy in the rear of them, carrying a target, super- seded the necessity on our part, of making a — inquiry as to the object of their turn- out. AckowLenezuzst —The Board of Mana- gers of the Washin ston City Protestant Orphan Asylum, gratefully adknuowledge the following donations: Mrs. Susan Ireland, $500; Mes. Ogle Tayloe, $50. ‘ Tae Goon Witt Cvs will give their bs! to night at Carusi’s Saloon, having made such arrangements as cannot fail to conduce to the happicess of the company which may gratify with their presence. ah a ear ATIONAL THE The grand iT — e of. was aus stabs er di to a dense assem> won the plaudits of th mwa oe ot won tatora > mirable manner in w! he performed his part. Owens, the favorite Comedian, who will apnear at the National on Wednesday night in the “Comedy of Errors,”” rates the charaeter of Dromio of Syra- cuse, while Mr. Jefferson will enact the coun- terpart of Dromio of Ephesus, Mr. Owens will “do,” in prrerem parlance, Jakey in a ‘Glance at Baltimore,’’ and Mr. Jefferson “Dutehy.’’ We cannot say that this farce is in accordance with classic taste. The scenery, painted by Mr. Getz, presents views of Monu- ment Square, Barnum’s Hotel, the Museum, Light Street Wharf, North Point Monument, and other well-known Baltimore localities. Itis rumored that Mr. James W. Wallack, Jr., is to be the next “Star” at the National Theatre. _A desire has been expressed by some of our citizens to have an entertainment from Mr. and Mrs. Barney Williams, on Thanksgiving night Thereis little, or no doubt, that the | performance would “‘pay.”” ALEXANDRIA CORRESPONDENCE.
