The lamentable ab- sence of that class of persons from all reli- gious ser ices on the Sebbath, has been a sub- ject to which we have given some attention for years past, and we had the curiosity—if it deserves no better name—to look about, and see how large an audience the preacher had of those to whom the discourse was addressed. The number was exceedingly small, probably as | as will average in theother churches. And as we sai there, reflecting up- on the dangers which threaten our country from this rapidly increasing neglect and abuse af the Sabbath, we thought some day wo would preach one of our sermons upon the same subject, believing that after all we have the ear of more of that class, perhaps, than all the ministers in the city put Speier: Aud now young men—you who never dark- en the doors of a church on Sunday, who swagger through the streets with a c in our mouth, who swear a little, perhaps a good deal, who drink some ram, and pride yourself on being “one of the b’hoys,’’ will you indulge us with @ word in yourear? In a period of years which will seem inaredibly skort, when you arrive at your majerity, your class will compose a very powerful, ued k may be, a controlling influence in the management of public affairs. Did you ever think of that? —and if you did, did you realize responsibili- ty in the matter? Judging from the present appearance of ourehurehes, when the present generation of men has passed away, the pews will be left pretty much to the female portion of the race, if, indeed, they do not imbibe the infidel spirit of the age, and leave them to be- come houses of merchandise, if not dens of thieves. The infidelity so rife here, is not the infidel ity of the intellect, which is becoming too »pular among scholars of a certain school, put itis not less dangerous. They who ne- giectthe Sabbath and its institutions here, sre not those who have thought much. Theirs is the infidelity of indifference and the want of thought—the infidelity that kee; away rom all chance of, correction, which is not, and cannot be reached, either by the argument ACADEMY UF MUSIC. ‘TANT TO GENTLEMEN.
