In “The Watchman” figures the Jack tar, who is designated as old Jenkins. The character is well drawn, and the writer shows himself well acquainted with the sailor character. We give be- low the death scene cf “ Old Jenkins:” In the course of a few years, however, the rheumatism began to play about the join's of the old sailor. and his limbs grew stiff, and he was no longer able to perform his duties on board of the yacht with his furmer activity; by and bye, by slow degrees, these pains and the con- comitant infirmities of age increased upon him, and the yacht had to be given up altogether. Then in the ample chim- ney corner of the servants’ hall: in the lordship’s mansion, in winter, and on a Seat covered with an arbor, overlooking the fish pond, which Lord Mordant had constructed for his especial benefit in summer, the old man passed his waking hours—telling bis battles and adventures by land and flood over and over again for years—until at last he was confined to his room —then to his bed. He lingered, however, for a lon while. and Lord Mordant, who had bs reatly attached to him. #-- vecome rs foe by bse * a --equently spent Wien -* ~ vedside. He was present ~«ae old man died. Wis lordship, upon entering the room, asked Jack, as usual, how he felt. «Lam drifting ashore fast, your honor,” was the reply. *«Uld Jack Jenkins will soon be stranded in eternity.”’ “Keep your courage, Jack,” said his lordship, ‘I hope you'll be with us for many a day yet.” ‘ “No, your houor. The order’s been passed to slip old Jack’s cable, and the chain’s already bitted.” *Can I do anything for you? Have you everything you wish ?” “I should like a pipe of ’bacca, your honor. These varmints of servants won't give it me, though I’ve axed it twenty umes; cos why? the doctor says how it’s bad for my cough. The cough was plaguey bad last night, your honor.” ‘Then, Jack, I think they did right. You know they must follow the direc- tions of the physician.” “All right, sir. Idon't blame ‘em. I never axed for a pipe these three week: till yesterday. I know it’s a seaman’s duty to obey orders ; but when a man’s on his beam ends, and all the doctors in the service can’t set up his rigging again, why, then, I think it’s hard to thwart his humor. I shan’t see daylight to- morrow, sir, and I should like one pipe afore I drops off the hook. May be ’bacca ain't served out in the other world. Jack said this so earnestly yet so inno- cently, that his lordship, notwithstand- ing that he saw the old man was rapidly sinking, could scarcely forbear a smile, and he ordered the servant to bring the much-coveted pipe, which Jack smoked with much apparent pleasure. Then, laying it aside, he said: *Bacca and me’s cut acquaintance, your honor ; that’s the last pipe old Jack Jenkins “ll ever smoke. Now, sir, please to send for the parson, for the tide’s ebb- ing fast, and at low water the soul of the vid sailor "ll take its departure for the unseen world.” “‘Do you feel sovery bad, Jack?” asked his lordship, with great feeling expressed in the tone of his voice. “T feels no pain, sir;” but I knows that my cable’s almost run out, the last bight is close to the hawser hole, and there aint no timo to spare. I should like to make my accounts all square be- fore I sheer off.” Lord Mordant sent immediately for the rector of the parish, who soon arrived at the abbey, and was skown into the old man’s bedroom. Lord Mordant would have retired, but Jack begged him to stay. “How do you find yourself now, Jack ¢” said the clergyman, to whom the old sailor was personally knowa. “I'm dying, your reverence—dying— slipping away—quietly and comfortably —but my glass is nigh run out.” “Shall 1 read to you, or pray with you?” “ Thank you kindly; you may—I shall be glad to listen ; but first I would like to ask your reverence a few questions 3” “ What are they, Jack? speak free- ly,” said the clergyman. «Is your mind at peace with the world? Do you pos- sess the hope of happiness hereafter 7” “IT am pertectably comfortable that way, Sir—as comfuriable as a man may well be, who is passing, as I have heard you say, ‘ through the valley of the sha- dow of death,’ where all beyond looks hazy through the spygiass; but there is one thing troubles me sorely.” «Then tell me what it is, my good old friend, and relieve your mind from all earthly cares.” “This aint an earthly care, your rev- erence,” feebly replied the old man, whose life was evidently now fast ebbing away. So much the better, Jack. It is well, if, at this awful hour, you had been ena- bied to forget all earthly cares, and to turn your thoughts entirely to that fu- ture, whose mysteries you are so svon to | solve. What is it you would speak to me about?” “It’s one of those mysteries, sir, as I should like to have my mind made easy about before I slips off: I’ve been spliced on to two women, your reverence, and both have slipped their cables afore me What troubles me is to know to which on ‘em [ shall be lotted on to when I gots up aloft.” ‘* In the future world there is no mar- riage, neither is there any giving in mar- riage,” replied the elergyman. «Let not such trifling thoughts occupy your mind now.” “Well,” replied Jack, «if your rev- erence says so, and the Bible says so, I suppose it’s all right. Ontentst Custom oF “ DzopPinG THe ilANDEERCHIEF.”—The signification of the oriental custom of dropping handker- chiefs before females is we!l known. Un- der the reign of Napoleon I., the Turkish ambassador, or visiting Versailles, threw his handkerchief before a lady whom he met walking in the garden, and was as- tonished that she did not take it up. In the Turkish war of 1812, the Pasha of Rustchuk, being taken prisoner by the Russians, and then escorted by a Captain Markow to St. Petersburg, stopped on his way at Zitomer. General Komburly, the then Governor of Podoiia, invited the Pasha to an evening party at his own residence. Here the prisoners happened to be farcinated by the charms of a young lady, then only fourten years old, and after the oriental fashion, dropped his handkerchief on her while she was sitting on the sofa. The young lady felt confused, and took it up, whereupon the Pasha immediately left the company, and returned to his quarters, there to await her arrival; but not seeing her come, and suspecting treachery on the part of Captain Markow, he grasped his kindjal, and furiously menaced him. Re o- tations were made to the old Turk, that such a custom did not exist in that coun- try; but the Pasha would not be per- suaded, and was so incensed against Cap- tain Markov, that it was deemed advisa- ble to appoint another officer to escort the prisouer to St. Petersbarg.— The Moslem and Christian. Toe Famtsnep W anperer.—I should like very much to hear a story,” said @ fickleand thoughiless youth to his teach- er, “I hate serious instructions.” “Listen, then,” said the teacher. “A wanderer filled his travelling pouch with Savory meats and fruits, as his way wou'd lead him throvgh a wild desert. During the first few days he journeyed through smiling, fertiie fields. But in- stead of plucking the fruits which nature here offered for the refreshment of the traveller, he found it more convenient to eat the provisions he carried with him. He soon reached the desert. Afzer jour- neying onward a few days his whole store of food was exheusted. He now began to wail acd lament, fcr nothing sprouted & spear of grass; everything was covered with burning sand. “After suffering for iwo long days the torments of hunger and thirst he expired.” “It was very foolish in him,” said the youth, ‘to forget that he had to cross the desert.” “Dost thou ret more wisely?” asked the teacher, in an earnest tone. “Thou art setting forth on thy journey of life—a journcy thai leads to Eternity. Now is the time when thou shouldst seek after inowledge, and the treasures of wisdom; bat the leader afrights thee, aud thou dost prefer to trifle sway the springtime of thy vears amid useless and childish pleasures. Contine to act thus and thou wilt yet, on the jouracy of life, when wis- dom and virtue fail thee, frre like the hopeless wanderer.” Iptixess—Its Dancers.—There is an old proverb that tells us, «Idleness is the devil’s pillow,” and well may it be so esteemed, for no bead ever rested loag upon it, but the lips of the evil spirit were close to his ear, breathing falsehood and temptation. The industrious man is seldom found guilty of a crime, for he has no time to listen to the enticings of the wic’sed ones and he is content with the enjoyments honest cfforts afford. It is the vicious idler vexed to see the for- iunes of his industrious neighbor grow- ing while he is lounging and murmuring, who robs and murdeis that ue may get unlawful gain. 1t is the merry, thought- less idler who, to relieve the nothingness of his days, seeks the excitement of the wine cuy and the gambling table. It is the ecnsual idler, whose licentious ear is Opea to the tempter as often as his track crosses the pathway of yvuth and inno- cence.— Miss Chandler's Elements of Character. .
