HYDEROPHOBIA. Ttis no pleasure to a dog to go mad. Quite the reverse. ireadiui as hydro- ;phobia may be to the human being, ra- | bies is worse to the dog. It makes its j approach more gradually. It lasts longer, and is more intense while it endures. The dog that is going mad feels unwell for a long time prior to the develo:ment of the disease. He is very ill, but does not know what ails him, Le feels dis- satisfied with everyth’ng, vexed withgut & reason, and, greatly against his better nature, very enappish. Feeling thus, he longs to avoid all annoyances by being alone. This makes him’seem strange to those who are most accustomed to him. ‘The sensation induces him to seek soli- tude. But there is another reason which decides his choice of a resting place. ‘the lighe inflicts upon him inteuse ago- ny. The sun is to him an instrument of torture, which he therefore studies to avuid—for his brain aches, and feels a: if it were a trembiing jelly. This in- duces the poor brute to fiad out the holes and corners where be is least likely to be noticed, and into which the light is una ble toenter In solitude and darkne-s he passes his day. If his retreat be dis- covered, and the master’s voice bid him to come forth, the affectionate creature's countenance brightens, his tail beais the ground, and he caves his hiding place anxious to obey the loved authority; but before he has gone half the distance « kind of sensation comes over him which produces an in tantancous change in hi: whole appearance. He seems to say to himself: « Why cannot you let me alone ? Go away—do go away! You trouble— pain me ¢” And thereupon he suddenly turns tail and darts back into bis dark corner. If let alone, there he will re- main, perhaps frothing a little a. the mouth, and drinking a great deal of wa- ter, but not issuing from his hiding place to seek after food. lis appetites, are altered; hair, straw, dirt, filth, excre- ment, rags, tin shavings, stones, the most noisome and unnatural substances, are then the delicacies for which the poor dog, changed by disease, longs for and swallows, in hope to ease a burning stomach. Ho is most anxious for liquids. He is now altogether changed. Stull, be does not desire to bite mankind; he rather endeavors to avoid society; he takes long journeys of thirty or forty miles in ex tent and lengthened by all kinds of acci- dents, to vent his restless desire for mo- tion. When on these journeys, he does not walk. This would be too formal and measured a pace for an animal whose whole frame quivers with excitement He does not run. That would be too great an exertion for an animal whose body is the abode of a deadly sickness He proceeds in a slouching manner, in a kind of trot—a movement neither run nor walk—and his aspect is dejected His eyes do not glare and stare, but they are dull and retracted. is appearance is very characteristic, and, if once seen can never afterwards be mistaken. In this state, he wiil travel the mo=t dusty roads, his tongue hanging dry from his open mouth, trom which, however, there drops no foam. Hiscourse is not straight. How could it be—since it is doubtuul whether at this period he sees at all ? His desire is to journey unnoticed. If no one notices him, ‘.e gladly passes by them. He is very ill; he cannot stay to bite. If, nevertheless, anything oppose his progress, he will, as if by impulse. Snap—as a man in a similar state might sirike—and tell the person “to get out of the way.” He may take his rozd across a field in which there are a flock of sheep. Could these creatures only make room for him, and stand motion- less, the dog would pass on and leave them behind uninjured. But they begin to run, and at the sound the dog pricks up his ears. His entire aspect changes. Rage takes possession of him. What made that noise? He pursues it with all the energy of madness. Le flies at one, then at another. [le does not mangle, nor is his bite, simply consider- ed, terrible. He cannot pause to tear the creature he has caught. He snaps and then rushes onward, tll, fairly ex- hsuated and unable longer to follow, he sinks down and the sheep pass forward, to be no more molested. He may have bitten twenty or thirty in his mad on- slanght; and would have worried more, had his strength lasted —for the furore of madness then had possession of him. He may be slain while on these excursions; but if he escapes, he returns home and secks the darkness and quiet of his former abode. His thirst increases, but with it comes the swelling of the throat. He will plunge his head into water, so raven- ous is his desire; but not a drop of the liquid can he swallow, though its sur- face is covered with bubbles in conse- quence of the efforts he makes to gulp the smallest quantity. The throat is enlarged to that extent which will per- mit nothing to pass. He is the victim of the most hornble inflammation of the stomach, and the most intense inflam- mation of the bowels. His state of suf- fering is most pitiable. He has lost all self-reliance; even feeling is gone. He flies at and pulls to pieces anything that is within his reach. One animal in this condition béing confined near a fire, flew at the burning mass, pulled out the live coals, and in his fury scrunched them. He emits the most hideous cries. The noise he makes is incessant and peculiar. Tt begins as a bark, which sound, being too torturing to be continued, is quickly cuanged to a bowl, which is suddenly cut short in the middie; and so the poor wretob st last falls, fairly worn out by a terrible disease.—Mayhew’s Dogs. tO” Conceit is proud that he has learned so much; wisdom is humble that be knows no more. ~ (> Modesty is a handsome dish cover, ! stars will fall, and which makes us ancy there must be! eclipse, and men won't,’ | earth beaven. © ’ something very good beneath it. PorTMarrers who sct as agents will be slowed commission Of twenty per cen: Entrasty Fiescep.—A day or two | since a young man arrived in this city from the neighborhood of Williamsport, Pennsylvania, and made ssle of a large amount of lumber, to be delivered, and got advances to the amount of about one thousand dollars Unfortunately for himself, when on the eve of returning home, he made the acquaintance of two very genteel looking indivicuals, _who prevailed on him to protract his visit for a day that they might have an cpportu- nity of showing him around the city. A carriage was called, and the trio wok = ride to one of the villages near the city, and when they returned the vic'im was in good condition to be fleeced of all the money he had. He spent the night in company with his newly-made friends, and yesterday morning when he was ready to start for home, his moncy as weil as his watch were gone, and he hed not the means to defray his expenses. One of his friends who had sided in rob- bing mm magnanimonsly loaned him a sufficient amount to reach his home, whither he will return, it is to be boped, satisfied that all who appe»r in genteel garb are not gentlemen. He is repre- sented to be a young man of good busi- ness habits, and in the ordinary trans- actions of business life is fully competent to take care of himself. Fersons visiting the city from the country should be very careful of the associations into which they are liable to fal, and especially to guard against the society of persons who live upon the credality and ignorance of others. There are plenty of such char- acters in this city, always wil'ing to be- stow their time and attention upon those «hp bave money and are silly enough to trust themselves in their company.—- Balt more Americ n. Decuixe or AvtHority.—The parent of to-day is an extremely mitigated form of the parentof fifty years ago. Me hes no doubi the same fondness for his child, but he is no longer capable of enforcing the discipline which the child's social destiny exacts. The parent of to-day coaxes where the other was content to command; and the child, cons«quently, instead of growing up with a back-bone —instead of preserving some vestige of the wholesome rudeness and eimplicity of Nature—too often finds himselfin the very crisis of life dyspeptic, enervated, and inclined to disipation. The comnju- gal relation attests the same fact. Tne husband of to-day is not the busband his grandfather was before him. His grand- mother hed a certain awfal regard for that sublime and statcly functionary. But what wife of to-day feels any awe for her husband? “Catch her,”’ indeed ! Women’s rights are extreaely well un- derstood, even where they have not as yet consented to the foolish symbclism of dress. In the public sphere the same signs are visible. No one any longer reverences the Governor, and no one goes to see the President exe pt with the pat- riotic intention ofgetting ancfiice Time was when the little beys would cease from “mumble the peg,” and reverently step off the sidewa'k, when old Dr. Ro- gers or the great Dr. Mason passed, feel- ing that there was an inconczivsble smount of sanctity locked away in those sable shrines; but Dr. Spring or Bishop Potter might travel the town to day, his atenance perfectly radiant with Shakspeare, Milion. and Hooker;” and find no urchin so humble as to do him reverence..—Life I lustrated. Tue Poor Mawen 8 ‘'ontrisvtion.— During the years 1813 1814 and 1815, when Prussia had collected all her re- sources, in the hope of freeing hereelf irom the yoke which France bad laid upon her, the most extraordinary feeling of patriotism burst forth. Every thought was centred in the struggle; every coffer was drained: all gave willingly. in town and village altars were erccted on which ornaments of gold, silver and pre- cious stones were offered up. Massive plate was replaced in palaces by dishes, platters and spoons of wood Ladies wore no other ornaments than those made of iron, upon which wasengraved: * We gave gold for the freed mof her country, aut, like her, wear an iron yoke.” One evening, a party had assembled in the house of an inhabitant of Braslau. Among them wasa beautiful, though poor maiden. Her companions were boasting what each had coutribated towards tbe freedom of their country. Alas! she had no offering to proclaim—none to give. With a heavy heart she took ber leave. While unrobing for the night, she thought she could dispose of her hair, and so add to the public fund. With the dawn, she went to a hairdresser, related her simple tale, and parted with-her tresses for a trifling sum, which she instantly depos- ited on an altar, and returned to her quiet home. This reached the ears of the officers appointed each day to collect the various offerings ; and the president received a confirmation from the hair- dresser, who proposed to resign the beau- \iful hair, provided it was resold for the benefit of tather land. The offer was accepted ; iron rings were made, each containing a portion of her hair; and these produeed far more than their weight in gold.
