EVENING STAR.|_ The following beautiful lines from the Dublin Uni- COMPOUND BHBCEH DROP; Or. Cancer Root. versity Magazine will remind the reader of the Inst | QF] FRRATED REMEDY FOR OAN- acene in Bunyan’s Pilgriin’s Progress :— BEYOND THE RIVER. Time is a river decp and wide; And while along its banks we stray, We see our lov’d ones oer its tide Sail from our sight away, away. Where are they «; hey who return No more to glad our longing eyes? They’ve passed from life’s contracted bourne Toland unseen, unknown, that lies Beyond the river. 'Tis hid from view ; but we may gene How beautiful that rea'm must be ; For gleamings of its loveliness, In visions granted, o!t we see, ‘The very clouds that o’er it throw Their veil, unrais’d for mortal sight. With gold and purple ti.tings glow, Reflected from the glorious light Beyond the river. And gentle airs, 80 sweet, se calm, Steal sometimes frou: that vie «less sphere ; The mourner feels their breath of Laim, And seothed sorrow dries the tear. And sometimes list’ning ear may gain Entrancing sounds that hither floats; The echo of a distant strain, Of harpe’ and voices’ blended notes, Beyond the river. eet There our \ov’d on s in their rest ; They've cross’d Time’s River—now uo wre ‘They heed the bubbies on its breast, Nor feel the storms that sweep its shore. But there pure love can live, can last— ‘They look for us th. ir home to share : When we in turn away have pass’d, What joyful gree ings wait us there. Beyond the river. S$ Henry 8. Mott, of Pennsylvania. We publish the following letter as an item of news for the readers of the Star: PHILADBLPBIA, Oct. 16, 1854. Gayriewen: Lam grateful to you as old and valued friends fur the generous ani elo- uent letter you have addrexeedto me. I proposed to add to this deniai any other that might be required at my hands. It ia allegod in some of the Whig papers that I did not eit and again repeat this contradiction. jut I prize my own character too highly— value my principles wo dearly—I have la- bored too long and two zexlously in the Demo cratic ranks odeem it nece-sary ‘bat I should volunteer 2 reply to every imputation upon my standing as a Democrat All that you say of oy opinions in regard to this accusation, I cheerfully endorse; and { am gied that I have had furnished to mean op- portunity that enables me at the same time to point to you, gentlemen, as my hostages, «nd once more to dec'ar- that Iam not now and never have been a member of any other politi- cal organization but the Democratic party. When I became the candidate of the Demo- oratic party for Canal Commiscioner, I de- por upon that alone for my election. While shall carefully study the interests of the whole people, I can represent the interests of wo other party in the offitial position I am aboutto assume. I am for the largest degree of civil and religious liberty, and cannot sub- scribe, and never have subscribed to the doc- trine that any citizen known to the Consti'u- tion as such, shall be proscribed from civil office, or in any de-ree debarred of his Tights because of his religious belief or the place of his birth. In the late canvass, I diligently exerted my humble abilities to secure the triumph of tne Democratic party and iis principie:, and to ad vance tne success of my abie and well tried colleagues on the ticket, and it is with pride and pleasure that I refer tothe result in ny own section of the State, and particulariy in my own representative district. as an evidence of the truth of what [ say. I am aware that the confidence of a few of my Democratic friends has been somewhat dis'urbed by the Peculiar circumstances which surround my po- sition, but I trust this definition of my views end ections may satisfy all.
