From Loulsviile. PRSTRUCTIVE FIRS-—DEATH OF AN OLD CITIZEN. Lovavitza, Ost. 18, 1854. A fire originated last night in the extensive book atere of H.C Mortor, on Main street, near Thicd. The flames communicated to the tin ware stors of McDermott Clifford & Co, and the store of Csssidy & Hopkins, the latter of which was but slightly damaged. McDermott, Ciifford & Co. saved s szaail porifon of their stock, but the‘eatire contents of Mr, Morton’s estabilshment were Gestroyed. The loss ic estimated at $45,000, which is mostly covered by insurance Major J L. Martin, we vider’ and wealthiest citizen of Lopisville, died yesterday. Exhibitions and Fairs, THE NEW ENGLAND HORSE EXAIBITION. Brarrutmoro’, Vt., Oct. 13, 1854. The New England horse ¢xhibition to day was a fine ove. The entries included sbout one hundred and afty Srimals, four-fifths of which were Morgan varieties, Black Hawk predominating. There have been exhibl- tious of a grester number of horses, but nove, perhaps, ‘Of greater value of stock. Five thousand dollars were fefused for each of two horses on the ground. ‘Ubis morning o half mile was made by 8 mare belong- ing to Mr J. L. Brigge of Springfeld, Maas., at ths rate of two minutes and fifty four seconds. A mare belong- ing toMr. Twitchell, the snyerintendent cf the Boston acd Worcester Reiircad aisp made excellent speed. This afternoon was devoted to testing the qualities of stallions, and those desizned for all work, and those of seven years and under, by the rule of apeed but none of them beat the above time. The attendance on the ground was liberal. The programme of to morrow includes sunéry trotting matches and the decirions »f the judges. Fri¢ay will be spent in miscellaneous matches, some of great interest; also» trie! of equestrian skill for the prize of a gold watch, to be competed for by ladies. A similar prize is offered for the best speed made by three year old horses. THE OHIO STATE FAIS. NuwaRk, Ohio, Oct, 13, 1854. The State Fair is now infuit blast, and the admissions have been very large. About 6000 badges have besn bold to day, and some new entries made. ‘ke committee have been evgaged since 10 A. M., and their examications will not be completed until late to- moorrow. The reports of premiums wil! aot be made pub- lic until Friday. The horses of Ohio are much finer than is usually mupposed at the East. The stallions of various breeds ‘fare as handsome as can be found in Vermont. Sixteen roadsters are now trotting in the ring, which is one third of mile in circumference, to the great delight of some 5,000 people. This part of the exhibition attracts the crowd from the examination of the cream of the Durham steck of Ohio. Chichester’s flax machine is being set upin Mechantes, Hall, and a large quantity of straw ison hand for to- morrow, when the practical value of the improvement will be shown. The manufacturers, department and the display of flowers are small for a State fair, Each, however, pos- fe-res objects of attraction Acarriageon exhibition, manufactured at this place, 8 superior in point of elegance to any@hing which has been seen at the Crystal Palace. Owing to the postponement of the fair from Peptem- ber, the products have come forward slowly.
