One of the features is “Madonna of the Desert” and the other is “Texas, Brooklyn and Heaven.” Refreshingly different in plot is the new Republic drama, “Madonna {of the Desert.” Starring Don Castle, | Lynn Roberts, Don Barry and Shel- don Leonard, the story revolves |around the priceless, centuries-old statue which gives the film its title. The action is laid in the northern |ranching area of California and | the script has a new switch. The | writers have cleverly woven into their plot some of the customs and habits of the foreign-born citizens who settled and developed that sec- |tion of the state. Thus, there is an | intriguing and pleasant old-world | flavor, welcome and diverting, main- | tained throughout the film. A polished, big-time thief reads about a bejewelled madonna in an art magazine and resolves to acquire it. “Texas, Brooklyn and Heaven,” is the film treatment of Barry Bene- field’s best-selling “Eddie and the Archangel Mike,” with Diana Lynn and Guy Madison in the key roles. The story itself, starting in the eity room of the Dallas, Texas, News, moves rapidly to that area of :legend and humor, Brooklyn, N.Y,, {and the tale of the two Texas young- isters who can get in more scrapes per minute than Leo Durocher winds up in a bit of heaven on earth for | them. | The film 18 nued with laughter- } filled incidents. — “The thinking fellow Calls a YELLOW* AW@A wo !
