NEWS ITEMS FROM SITKA | SITKA, Alaska, July 23—(P—The plan to use the Sheldon Jackson Hospital as a temporary emergency | community hospital wa: | by the city Council at its regular meeting. Appearing to present the | plan was Howard Bradshaw, Presi- | dent of the Hospital Committee. A minimum amount of alterations and equipment was recommended, | most of which has already been pledged by donation, both materials and labor. Only still needed is a and a new water heating unit. The council voted an appropr tion of $5,000 to cover a possible deficit in the first year's opera- tion. Appointed to the hospital ad- ministration board were the Rev. Ernst Nygaard, Leslie Yaw and the Rev. Lawrence Nevue who had drawn up the recommendations, plus Howard Bradshaw, Other business acted upon by the Council included: reading of a let- |ter from Delegate Bartlett an- | ncuncing early resumption of maii | boat service between Sitka and Juneau through subletting of the Esteketh contract. Letters from the Navy Department announcing the arrival of more Navy boats early in Septemter. C. J. Ehrendreich, CPA from Ju- neau, present for questioning on the tentative budget drawn?¥p-for the coming year, stated thdt the city’s present excellent financial condition was due entirely to the existence of the sales tax and warned that should the tax ordin- ance fail to be ratified in the fall election the city would again be in a financial mess. Ordinances 128 and 129 were | given their two final readings and e refrigerator new periods for public office: two years for mayor and three for ccuncilmen. The second creates and defines the duties of the Hospital Committee. The Territorial law covering the collection of boat taxes was thor- oughly discussed but tabled because the time limit set for making col- lections is t of the tang However, it was agreed that every effort should be made toward a uniform program for all of Southeast Alaskan. Bills totaling $1,345.72 were ap- proved. A Community, House stockhoiders meeting has been scheduled to find the answer to the question put to | the Community House board of di- rectors by members of the Hos- pital Committee. Would the Com- | munity House building be available for conversion into a community | hospital and on what terms? ‘The Hospital Committee has done | considerable work on a survey i which seemed to indicate that the chvious solution to Sitka's need for a hospital in the immediate future is such a conversion. But no fur- ther steps could be taken until it was known whether or not the building would be made availa:le. Acting on a vague report made to U.S. Commissioner Frank Rich- Chief of Police Stérmy Doran and Mr. Flemming of ANS combed the harbor islands and recovered over $300 worth of radio and elec- trical equipment which had been stolen from Japonski Island and cached on DeGroff Island. The loot was hidden in a cave with a very small entrance. The boys sus- | pected of the theft are in custody ‘of the authorities. Mr. and Mrs. Leslie Yaw with approvea large equipment | | passed unanimously.
