AGE CHANGES Recent action of the Council Executive Board in ratify- ing national age changes for v.he[ Boy Scouts of America program was anrnounced today by the local Scout office. Effective Sept. 1, boys may join the Cub Scouts at the age of eight instead of the previous nine year minimum. Beginining age for the Boy Scouts is reduced to 11 years. Senior Scouts may start at 14 in- stead of jfhe 15 year requirement previously in effect. This is the first change in age limits in the 39 year history of the Boy Scout organization, ac- cording to Scout Executive Maurice Powers. Effect of the new ruling in Ju- neau and Douglas will be to allow about 40 -eight year old boys to join the Cub Scouts this year in- stead of waiting until they are nine. The resulting extra heavy “crop”; of eight and:- nine year old§ to join ‘the Cub Scouts this fall may make necessary the organization of a new pack in Juneau to absorb them, Powers said. There are only two packs in Juneau with other groups on the Channel at Douglas and Auk Bay. The Executivie Board has also instituted an “optional period” until next Jan. 1 during which 11 year old boys may either remain in the Cub Scouts or transfer into the Alaska | Boy Scouts. This is to allow pre- sent Cub Scouts to obtain their Lion and Webelos badges, top Cub honors, before going on into the Boy Scout program, However, effective Jan. 1, 11 year old boys will not be accepted into the Cub Scout program any longer. Lowering of the Boy Scout age limit to 11 effective Sept. 1 will permit roth 11 and 12 year olds to join local troops for the first time. ‘There is the possibility that one or more new troops may have to be started at that time to care for the increased numbers. Boys, 14 years old, may either re- main in the Boy Scout troops or they may transfer into senior units. iunit on the Channel, the Juneau Sea Scouts. However, Scout officials think the lower age limit for Senior Scouts may stimulate the need for an Air Scout Squadron or EXx- plorer Post in Juneau and possibly ia Sea Scout Ship in Douglas. Henry Harmon, chairman of the !local organization and extension committee, issued an invitation to- day to local institutions interested yin the sponsorship of new scouting units for boys to contact him or the Boy Scout office for further information.
