FIGURE SKATERSH | N TS CONTRY | | | | | OUTCLASSES 7 | THE FIELD OF /py ] ; SPORT SLANTS | It was interesting to note at the {Middle Atlantic speed skating championships that while the men | in the senior division were stag-| ing one of the closest and most | ‘excmm{ struggles in 17 years, Miss | Kit Klein of Buffalo retained her jcrown in the easiest sort of fash- | ion. | The long-striding young lady whe holds about every indoor and out- door skating title won all three championship races, 220, 440 and 880, to earn a total of 90 points Her next competitor,, Miss Muric | Wilson of Darien collected 3( points. And that just about illus trates the margin by which Ki Klein outclassed the field. Berlin-Bound It was about the same with the other ice queen, Miss Maribel Vin- son, seven times national figure skating champion. As soon as Mis: Vinson skated out on the ice at the recent championships in Madison (Square Garden everyone knew a | champion was performing. Her re- ! cent exhibition was even more fin- ished than her previous winning efforts. Her most difficult execu- itions were achieved with consum- mate ease. Her mastery set her off from the other competitors and let {hind to fight it out for what few thonors she did not gather as she skated off the ice. Miss Vinson earned a place on the Olympic team which will com—l pete at Garmisch-Partenichen, Ger- many, in February. Miss Klein, too, will show at the winter Olympic meeting, but only in the demon- | stration races for women skaters. |Miss Klein’s real objective is the world’s championship skating meet- ing at Stockholm. Stephens Tops It is not alone in the field of lice skating that the fair athletes I}mve dominated their branch of (sport in the same fashion that Joe {Louis has dominated the boxing business. There's a great gap be- tween Miss Helen Stephens of Ful- ton, Mo., and her nearest competi- tor. Less than a year ago Miss Stephens had never even witnessed a track meet. With but a few weeks of preparation she entered the| women'’s national A. A. U. track and field championships in St. Louis last March. She signalized her de- but by defeating Stella Walsh in | the 50-meter dash in record-break- ing time. Even on the occasion of her first competition she was marked as America’'s hope in the Olympic track and field games. She won three of the seven events decided | when she added the 8-pound shof! and broad jump titles to her win- ning effort in the dash event. Miss Stephens equalled the world record for 100 meters in winning the out- door championship and set a new | KT LEIN =0 —HdOLDS ABOUT IMPORTANT SPEED SKATING T\TLE IV HER.
