THE DAILY ALASKA EMPIRE, FRIDAY, APRIL 5, 1935 Fashion Remains True to the Navy During This Spring The fleet's in! Pass through any fashion-wise shop, look into the windows. On all sides youll see evidence that navy is in again. For, no matter how fashion may stray at other times of the year, in the springtime she always returns to navy. Easy to Wear Navy is as nearly perfect as any color could be. People, who find black difficult to wear, find that y does the right thing to their s. The young and the mature alike can wear it with assurance that they are suitably garbed. Navy Gets Along The fun of a navy costume is the fact that you can use any num- ber of different sets of accessor- ies with it. With the exception of brown and black, practically every other color on the chart can get along with navy blue. Of course you'll want to have navy shoes and a bag, but you can change off to your clay colored accessorics any time you feel the urge. When you weary of a white blouse, try a pink—or a lighter blue, try beige, or red, or even rust. There are endless possibili- Lead Out with the “}’vsl Suit Of Your Lau les You'll H(‘.n Falk That the Smartest Millinery Seas 0" . r This Spring m in Years » Sols O o*” we bow to the men. Look for stitched linen canvas inside the fronts of the jackets, look for pads at the shoulders, look for sleek linings that can be very easily slipped into when you may be wearing a rather wooly sweater. It is these litfle points that keep a ilored suit in shape from the n's beginning to its very end. With these suits, the shirtwaist is the best looking blouse, and o be at its best must be snugly encir- | cled within the skirt. If your shirt- | waist does not have a. tie attached that is to be made into a.little tailored bow, wear one of the rath- er massive pins or clips right at’ the throat. This looks decidedly smari. One of the new pins featur- ing your own monogram would be extremely smart. Suite With Coats If you are looking for a suit to you twice, as long, and twice as well as the average, buy one of the topcoat suits. They.are being shown to a great extent. The coats nange frem three-quarter length to full length. And besides mateh- ing your suit, they are a fine com- panion for any of the sparts or cas- ual costumes in your wardrobe. First of all, is there anything smarter than a good looking woolen, top- per with a clever little cape, pref- erably of galyak? It's a fashion that is young, gay, easy to wear by miss and matron alike. Now then, if you were smart when you bought your coat, you saw to it that the cape came off as easy as one, two, three. All right—take it off! What have we? | A trim, untrimmed coat—(that is, if you had your shrewdness all intact when you went shopping! —perfect, alike for dress or sports frogks. Now for the third cos- tume. Put the little fur eapc over your favorite printed dress. dt's all the wrap you'll need on balmy days, and it's the smartest you could possibly buy. Many Lengthe There are several lengths for the cape as shown in fur on spring coats. Probably the most popular 'is that that ends just about at the elbow. There is an- other that comes to wrist length. Then, of course, there are little short ‘ones which are hardly more than collars, and yet love to be called capes in a season when they are so important. Sclf Material Capes Not all the capes are fur. Many of them are made of the same material as the coat. In many instances, .these . are also detach- able and may be ensembled with other costumes very successfully. Simulated Capes There arc some capes that are only part capes. There are coats with sleeves which may have two tiers, or only one over them giv- ing. the cape effect. There are models with two tiers stitched over the sleeves and extending across ihe back to create the cape illus- ion. Coats Look Young ‘There is a definitely youngz look about most of the coats. The Peter Pan collar which belongs exclusively to youth is one of the nicest collars of the season. It is done in self material or in flat furs, such as kidskin. Very often a taffeta further emphasizes the gaiety of these coats. Face-Framing Collars One of the fost flattering col- lars is seen in that which stands| up a bit at the back, and then ripples about the face in a most engaging manner. This is seen in any number of smart models. Sports Coats ' You're going to be overwhelmed with the number of. grand leok- ing sports ‘coats that are getting about in ‘the 'world. The darling of the mode appears to be the veefer with half belt, just in back. Generally | there are eight buttons . . . and sometimes in the very distinctively -youthful models there are even mare. These are seen in soft pastels and in high shades. Breezy Balmacaans The good old balmacaan has seen a great deal of action for the past few seasons, and it is sched-‘ uled to carry on its busy life for spring. Casual though they are, they play an important part in the life of the woman who drives a car, who hurries to business, to the girl on the campus. Swagger Coats Nothing daunts the classic swagger. Fashions may come and Smart Mode T'his Season and They Are place of the cont which may be thrown on over practically every- thing—to which nothing ever hap- pens and which you can reason- ably be sure will be just as good next year and next. It's to be had with scarfts or without, with im- portant looking buttons, or smart little clips. there is almost no end to the good things abeut swagger coats, and there is .cer- tainly no end to their chic! Coat Materials Tweeds areé the ranking materials in sports coats. Bright tweeds, as bright as the grass is green’ You can't get them too giddy. Joseph's coat of many colors finds its mate 1in this year's fashions. Woolens of a homespun, or bas- ket-weave feeling are also very much in the limelight for sports. Diagonals are holding their own in coats of a more dressy nature. This type of woolen looks well in both light and high shades. Wonlens with weave interets, as mau , are also extremely popular. They lend richness in a coat and make up very beautifully. For that extra little coat to en- semble with various dresses, the velveteen is perfect. oo - DYED LACE IS NEW PARIS WHIM With all the show of soft fem- inity in fashion, it is quite natur- al that lace should come strongly into the foreground. Many of the very smartest dresses which are making their way around in the best circles are trimmed generous- ly at the neckhne with .crisp, pure white lace. 'It looks fresh and smart. But if you want to look unusual see that the lace on your dress is dyed the same color as the frock. That is the way Pgris is doing it this spring. In many blue costumes this fashion is especially noteworthy. The lace is seen in rcvers, in scarfs that tie into soft. bows, in jabots, and in cuffs. The soft semi-tailored cos- tume is the perfect one, and may be found in so many charming ver- sions that every taste may be smartly satisfied. Choose Prints Carefully There are many pitfalls for the larger women in the spring of the year. The most attractive pattern, widely spaced, which may look rav- ishing on her slender sister, can do nothing but. work havoc with her. Prints of small proportions, or of blurred nature, are best, and decidedly flattering. Watch Colors lors with great clarity and brightness -should be avoided. But in a year when the dusty shades are the smartest, this should pre- sent no problem. Material Matters Of just as great importance as color or pattern, is the fabric from which the arger woman’s dress is fashioned. Taffeta is smart, but those stiffer fabrics: are best left for the very young and slender. Soft materials, such as heavy sheers, are very flattering and equally fashionable. Jacket Dresses Ideal There are mmny smart dresses to be had that boast a separate box jacket. These are ideal for the larger figure. The loose lines and simplicity of the jacket are ideal for the Junoesque. > DAILY EMPIRE WAV ADS PAY! In the spring of the year, a suit is a girl's best pal. Nothing will >ver take its place. The suit and the American girl belong together like Romeo and Juliet. No well- dressed woman would think of be- ing without at one good suit in her wardrobe. And we have kncwn women who have built their entire wardrobes of suits, except of course for the dres: they must have for those occasions when nothing else would do. Invariably one thinks of the suit as being associated chiefly with the English women, yet you will find that the chic Parisienne is as loyal to the tailored suit as any English or American woman.
