WOT'S ALL THE ABOUT? \,LSHOUTIN’ Marine News s : FISHERMEN HIT AT 8-CENT PAY OFFER FOR 1935 Head of Columbla River Union Safs Packers’ Offer “Insult” {VASTORIA, Ore, Dec. 13.—De- | seribing the offer as “an insult to fishermen,” Arvid Mattson, head of the Fishermen's Union, denounc- ed here today the packers’ offered pay of eight cents a pound for raw salmon on May 1, the opening day of the Columbia River salmon sea- on. He predicted that the proposal would be firmly rejected at Satur- day's meeting. He said that a bet- ter price than that paid last year— ten cents a pound—would be de-| manded. The packers, who met last week- end to decide on this year's price, | on the other hand deé¢lared today | that the reduction was necessary | because of losses experienced in the ! market, described as “stagnant for | the past five years.” Mattson said that there were sey- eral reasons why the price should | be higher in 1935. He pointed out, that new Federal regulations will cut heavily into the Alaska pack and that Bill 77 in the state of Washington “means a 50 per cent | cut in the Puget Sound pack and | a big slash from the Washington | side of the Columbia River pack.” “Consequently,” Mattson said, “with such a production drop and better prices in prospect, we expect, and will demand, a better figure than we received last year.” YUKON IS TO SAIL MIDNIGHT SATURDAY Owing to the Yukon being late on the southbound trip to Seattle, the steamer will not sail north until Saturday midnight instead of Saturday morning at 10 o'clock.
