ROUND OF BOUT Sends Silvér:Daisy Pick-, ing. After Three Tame Sessions Joo Collier, after three tame| rounds in the Leglon's main event; lay night, at the A. B. Hall, d a slashing right on Doc debonair countenance and| Doc’ arose to walk back to| his corner the customers, both cash | and credit, were filing out the exit! cf the new fight emporium opermcdi hy the ex-warriors. i It was a zood night for a lot “ff and things moved along, > ly in that direction | Collier-Silvers shindig. | he boys who paid for !11ei1"‘ pasteboards with ready money made | wry faces over the decision in the semi-final which was officially de-! clared a draw—but all in all, it was| a pretty good show 'till the big go.| ‘Down In First ! Silvers started out like he was going to use the ring floor as a, flop for the night. In the mixup close to the ropes after two min-| utes of fighting in the opening} ¢tanza, Doc’ wrapped his arms| around’ his lower tummy, crossed his legs and, with a pained expres- | sion as if he had been hit some-| where in Lapland, deposited him-} self gently on the floor. There| he rested until the gong ended Lhe; round. The referee, a physiciani and one or two bystanders gave him the “double O” and resumed their| seats. Apparently Doc’ thought he had been hit in a verboten spot, but the examining board didn’t con- cur and the fight, such as it was,| was resumed. The second round went by with all the quietness of a deserted | training sector, both boys success- fully avoiding anything that might have resembled unpleasantness. It was less than tame. The third| round slipped by in the same man- | ner, but more so. More mctiong has been encountered lots ot times at an oldfashioned silver tea. 1 Ended Without Warning | Then came the fourth and last frame. Shortly after it opened Doc' landed the first really clean| blow of the engagement. It was a Jeft to the chin and didn’t do any damage, only upset Joe's composure | for a minute. Doc’ seemed about'i to solve Collier's peculiar defense. He connected with a second left a little later, and Joe must have, thought Doc’ was getting in car-| nest. If so, he resented it. Lessi than a minute later, in a rlurry, near the ropes, he poked Silvers, in the tummy sort of rough and | then slammed a right to the jaw.i and while Silvers wilted to the canvas, Joe grinned happily from his corner. The referee needlessly counted ten and Joe vaulted the ropes and made his way to the cashier's office for the easiest di-| nero he's collected in lots of moons, | and suns, t00. Judges Say It's Draw One judge and the referee ruled that Eddie Roberts was entitled to a draw verdict in his mixup with Schoolboy Sammy Nelson. That's the basis the two boys were paid | off on. But the other judge and percentage of the fans saidj it was Sammy’'s by a mile. | Let it go as a draw. But the| tale of the bout by rounds tells a different story. The lads did split | even in the first round which was really not hot. Both tried for nn‘\ opening but neither found it. Rob-| erts, a head taller than Nelson. | Jocked the flashier, but sam’s| charging tactics bothered him at ihe outset and troubled him more as the fight progressed. { Nelson landed two solid rights to Roberts' head in the second, and was clicked over the heart him self. He was on the aggressive mo. of the time and kept boring in. Roberts could stand him off suc- cessfully enough to make it a box- ing match. Blood in the Third Nelson drew blood from Robert’s nose with a flailing left in the" third and landed both lefts and rights to the head in that round. He repeated this in the fourth, drawing more blood and near the end of the round, Roberts was clearly in distress from Nelson's battering tactics. Roberts made his best showing in the fifth. For the first half of that round, he led with a two- | handed attack to the head. He weakened in the last minute and Nelson was driving him back to the {ropes with short rushes when the ! bell ended it. Both boys mixed it freely in the cpening of the sixth. For a short time, Reberts held his own, but ) |Sammy repeatedly found openings ' for a straight left to the nose and mouth and soon took the lead. Nel- son finished unmarked and was much stronger than his opponent when the final gong sounded. Referee Sperling sided with Judge E. C. Adams in calling it a draw, while Judge Karl Theile scored five rounds for Nelson. Sharkey-Leyson Draw Young Sharkey, Unalga sailor, gave away eight pounds to Joe Leyson in their four-round spacial go, and earned a popular draw. This was one of the best matches on the card. Leyson had the bet- ter of the argument in the first two periods, although Sharksy drew first blood with a stinging right to the nose in the first round. Leyson landed twice to Sharkey's head with his left and once to the head and once to the body with his right in this stanza. In the second round bed Sharkey’s nose h a left and tapped the claret. He clipped Sharkey with two hard rights to| the head and Sharkey returned a| stiff left to Leyson’s head. Ley:-on stab- In the third, Sharkey stepped | out to a big lead. He waded into Joe with swinging fists, landing f three lefts and three rights to the head and twice to the body. Ley- son was on the defensive most of the time. | In the fourth round, Leyson shook Sharkey with a hard right just be- | low the right eye. For a few seconds, it bothered the sailor and he had trouble getting his sights corrected. But he carried Joe| along until his head and vision cleared and ended the round with | a fierce rally that gave it to him. The draw decision was roundly ap- plauded. Good Preliminaries The two preliminaries were good | for inexperienced boys. Jerry Rob- | erts was the better boxer, but! ‘Whiteley evened things up by dis-! playing a left that had heaps of nitro in it. Every time he hit Jerry, the latter skidded clear across the ring. The argument wasn't one sided and the draw was fair to both lads. Ervig, a little brown brother from Manila, gave Don Smith quite a lit- ' tle punishment in the first two rounds of the curtainraiser. Don returned the compliment in the last two frames and both the fighters and fans were pleased when the judges opined it was even. | Harry Sperling was third man in the ring. E. C. Adams and Karl Theile officiated as judges. Time- keepers were Dave Housel and H‘ H. Post. Arrangements Are Excellent ‘The lighting arrangements for the ring, new in Juneau, were ex- cellent. Big incandescents hung high above the ring were flashed on at the start of each round of every bout, and all of the house lights turned off. This favored the boxers and made for better vision for the spectators. For the first time locally, a whis- tle signal was used to warn the seconds from the ring a few seconds before the gong started the rounds. This was an innovation that also pleased. e r——— Have you tried the Flve o'Clock Dinner Specials at Mabry's Cafe? ovovwe LETTERHEADS ' as we print them evidence your business progress . |Deceptive driving, runs and rush WASH.STATE LOSES GAME - T0 S0, CAL ‘Saunders Gives Northern Boy Rush Act—Cali- fornia Given Scare, LOS ANGELES, Cal, Dec e {of Saunders, Southern California quarterback, put to route the sturdy giants of the Washington State Col- lege last Saturday afternoon as the California eleven pounded its way to victory over the Northerners, Washington State was not sub- dued however until a scare had|eastern record, witnessed the beea thrown into California.
