Grant, died at Morris Plains yesterday. He was born at the Grant family homestead in Clermont County, Ohio, and was some seven or eight years his brother’s junior. Like Ulysses and Simpson he removed to Galena, and became a member of the firm of Grant & Sons, the now historic firm of Jeather-tauners. Simpson died, and Orville virtually controlled the business, which soon worked upto a very profitable one for those - days at least. Ulysses was employed by him, and was cn- ged in the tanning business at_ the Fine of the breaking out of the War. Dur- ing his residence in Galena, which lasted antil about 1864, Orville succeeded in ac- cumulating quite a competency, and, on com- ing to Chicago in that year, was considered quite well otf. James E. McLean, a Penn- sylvanian who_had followed the tannery business down East, beeame acquainted with him, and the result of the acquaintance was a business partnership on Lake street under the firm name of Grant & McLean. The house prospered, though it is said that some of Orville’s latter ventures were risky and disastrous enough to have swamped them evenif the big fire of 1871 hadn’t caught them and completely wiped out their plant. It is said that President Grant was well ‘aware of this, and that it was one of the reasons—and ‘probably the chief one—for his appointing Mr. McLean, the sufferer by Orville’s ventures, Collector of the Port of Chicago in the summer of 1869. Orville Grant was neyer the same man after the fire, The visionary part of his nature seemed to grow and expand, until his head was full of wild speculations, which, of course, never turned out well. Orville had already begun to drink, and had been led to excesses, which shattered him both mentally and physically. Of late years he has been utterly incapable of taking care of his family, who, fortunately, were provided for at the home of Mrs. Corbin, his wife's sister, at Elizabeth, N. J. During the Jast five or six years Orville Grant has been a physical and mental wreck, His hab- its, instead of being checked, grew upon him, and naturally _incapacited him for. sustained labor‘ or, indeed, for Jabor of any ind. Tis mind was filled with dreams and_ speculative fancies. He turned up in Chicago every once mn awhile, and was always sure to £0 to the Custoin-House, where he was equally sure to fall in with somebody whom he ha | known under the MeLean régime, who might: be «relied upon—and generally was—to help him ‘out of a particularly tight pinch. To one of his old friends he was wont to talk glibly ‘about his $5,000 horse, and in the next breath to ask for a small loan, which was generally given and never repaid. He constantly labored under the impression that he was still in the leather business, ‘and ‘was arich man, and traveled the country on this supposititious reputation. | ‘1 would gchedule for at least $1,000,000, said he on one occasion after having borrowed some- thing from afriend who had frequently been. called. upon to relieve his oft financial infirmities. Just before the Grant Yeception in the fall of 187%, a num er of gentlemen in the city put their heads to- ether and managed to get him out of town fore the auspicious day when the whole Northwest turned out to welcome the re turning ex-President. He returned to the city, however, early in_ 1880, and, after Revs dering about awhile and existing as best iG could, was given a position in the egistere: Letter Department of the Chicago F ost-Office, from which he was considerately removed just before the Chicago Convention. Since then he has searcely been seen here, having spen his time mostly in New Jersey. Customers all seem to be doing well, and hence their bankers are doing well also. But when customers arc losing money he must be far above the average bank manager if losses do not come to him in the general sink- ing of values, So surely are benefits and mis- fortunes reciprocal in banking as in all other departments of business. Quotations for discounts are uniform, but bankers hold their funds firmly. Prime paper is taken from customers at 6@7 per cent; 8 per cent is still an exception and only obtained on small favors. Cal! loans are made at 5G6 per cent. It is always understood that tho collater- als are unexceptionable. These are in all cases preferred to extra names as security. New York exchange was dull and nominal at 6OGi5c discount per $1,000 between banks. Wheat was stroncer, with some buying orders confessedly dictated by the knowledge that the new crop is yielding very puorly; while the for- eign markets are tending upwara, thougha good way below a shipping basis for our No. 2. Corn was unsettled, and turned sharply down- ward, ranging lower tnan the previous ‘day. Several holders were anxious to unload at tho top, and were apprehensive that the top bad been reached for the present; but there were a good many orders to buy, and the olfer- ings were all taken. Oats veered about, and tended lower, in sympathy with corn, though tho receipts were small. Provisions were depressed early, but reacted, with a good demand for lard, and not much of othor product wanted. Mess pork closed easier at 317.90G,17.95 for September and $17.90 bid fur October. Bar- ley closed easier, at 92492! for September and 914,@92e for October. Hogs were steady at $6.0 @6.70 for light and $0.00G6.85 for heavy. Cattle were active and firm ut $2.75G6. ‘The receipts for the week were 31,000 cattle, 102,600 hogs, und 4,800 sheep, against 29,17 cattle, 87,700 hogs, and 2,785 sheep for the corresponding week last year. Dry goods were moving in a quict way at about steaay prices. The daily mails bring a good many orders, but as they are confined to small quantities for the renssortment of stocks, the volume of business docs not reach a very large aggregate. Jobbers of groceries report a good degree of activity. The city and country trade are ordering with fair liberality, and all tho staple articles and most side goods are held with unequivocal firmness. Corn sirups are Ic higher. The dricd fruit market developed in- ercased strength. Moth domestic and foreign dried were stronger than at the beginning of the week, and in raisivs, prunes, currants, and evaporated apples there has been # substantial advance. Fish were unchanged. Cheese was quiet, but there were no sellers at any conces- sion trom tue quoted prices. Butter also was firm. Oats met witb a fuirinquiry. Anadyance in turpentine of Je was the only change. ‘Coal and pig-iron remained tirm. There was a continued demand for the better grades of hay, with no market for the poorer kinds. Broom-corn is slow and unebanged. There were few berries in the market, and those mostly blackberries, which sold at $3.00 per 16- quart case. Apples were lower, good fruit be- ing obtainable at $2.00 per bri. Hides were re- ported steady, und wool shows the same absence of activity that has cnaracterized the market for weeks. Potatoes were steady at $2.00 per bri for good stock. ‘Trade in seeds was again active, timothy selling in large quantity for future de- livery. Flaxseea was steady and unchanged, and for cloverseed $4.50 was bid. Lake freights were dull and slow, with the vulk of the charters being forsteam-vessels, the rate on corn to Butfalo being 2c on that class of vessels. For Kingston 5!je was paid on corn. The ngeregite room taken was 197,000 bu corn, and 19,000 bu wheat, the latter fora Cunadinn port. It is reported that under the new rules of in- spection in New York several cargoes of No. 2 Chicago corn have recently been graded at the senbourd as “No. 3" and “steamer.” It is also stated that the exception was not taken on the ground of condition, but of quality. The corn is dry enough, but is claimed to be not xood enough, Comparing this with the complaints heard rather frequently this summer, to tho effect that tho Chicago Inspectors are too rigid in their application of the rules, one may see that there arc two sides to the story. There are evidently other people besides the Inspectors here who think that a good deal of the corn ar- riving here should be classed as low grades. PROVISIONS. $10G PRODUCTS—Were moderately active and irregularly lower. ‘The market was rather wenk eurly, under moderate offerings, ltle of which was wanted. ‘The easter tone was probably in sympathy with the unsettled conditions in corn, as Liverpool fevorted no change In prices, but the local. hog mar- ket was quoted easy.
