A LEA FO THE PONCAR, Epectat Dispatch to The Chteago Tribune, | , Wasmnatoxs, D. C., Feb. Secretary Schurz has lately had a correspondence with Mrs. Helen Hunt Jackson, a well-known authoresss, concerning the Ponea Indians. ‘This correspondent having, been referred to at public meetings in behalf of.thg Ponca In- dians in tho West, the Secretary has deemed it expedient to give It to the public, Mrs. Jackson wrote to Secretary Schurz, under date of Jan. 9, that she had received a letter front a Boston lady who sald that there wero many persons who would give largely to the Ponca cause If they had confidence in tho Secretary of the Interior as a friend of the Indians, to aid them’ by publicly and cordially Indorsing the effort now making on behalf of the Poneas, orto give his reasons for not doing so inn clear and explicit form so that thoy could be understucd. As a filend of the “Indinus he could not afford to ignore or lose the benedit of public interest now cxelted In this case. The Boston lady, iwhom Mrs, Jackson quotes at length, strongly urges the latter te secure the Indians an opportunity to defend their rights in the courts, : AND SAYS? “TfSeeretary Schurz will glye countenance to the effort, the $3,000 required to complete ‘the $10,000 asked for this purposo can be ralsed tn Boston in twenty-four hours,” Mrs, Jackson says the lady herself will make up the sum wanted. To this letter Seeretary Schurz replied, Jan, 17, apologizing for the dels, and saying that there is no case to be carrfed to the United States Supreme: Court, there being no appeal from Judge Bundy’ decislon by the Government. The appeal en talned was withdrawn by Schurvsyadvic because he did nut agrees with the principh upon which the argument was based, As. tothe right of the Ponens to thelr old reser. vation in Missouri, the Supreme Court has re- peatedly decided that an Indian tribe cannot sue the United States ora State. ‘This is ap- parent In thocase of the Cherokeo Nation ys. She asks whether any bill has been presented in Congress whieh ls designed to secure: the rights at Indians in thelr lands as whites aro secured, * Schurz replics, Jan, 26, that he wouldthave no greater objection that Indians should bring sult fa the courts to assert their rights thin he would that any white inan should do so. In whatis usually the dullest portion of the week's pro- ecedings, the consideration of bills on the private calendar, there was a very splrited debate.
