MONTREAL, A BTATR OF 8.RGE. &pecial Dispatch to e Trivune, Moxtnzat, July 12.~The brogramme for to- day, as outlined In tho t Je: &ims of last night, was carried out almost 1e letter. All day long the city was practic \y'n a state of sicge. There was s gencral sus, osfon of husiness, and in the morc prominer streets the shop- windows were hidden frc public gmze and possible stray bullets by | stily extemporized shutters. The hour sct fof'the convocation of tho Orangemen at their hall was 9 o'clock. Bomo tiwme previous, the volice, reluforced by 500 specials, had takon up a command- fog vusition immediately opposite the Orange Hall, whith occuples the upper floors of & large block about ball a block cast of the French 8quare. In the upuer windows were clustered groups of Young Britons ornamentesd with biue and orange colors, while hero and there au Orange sash was visible. Over the main entrance hune the British flag. GEN. sNTTHE | early get the troops in motion. 'The country volunteers occupied the Freoth and Victoria Squares and Beaver Hill, tho three most strategic points in the city, and the city troops were held in rescrve In IPominlon Square, opposiic the new Windsor A7otel. With each body of troops were"™two or tlres Mucistrates. About 9 n'c{! sk Chief-Marshal Hamiiton and his Assistan!Ingrabam, of the Orange body, made their apg arance, mounted in good style. They took 127 their positlon In front of the main cntrance, #hd patiently walt- ed events, fn tho meanticts the police nail driven the crowd from off the street fur & dis- tauce of about three bloc] A cordon of Bpecial Conatables, alded b few of the rewu- lar police, was farmed acroes the street at each of the vacant apaces, and against these surgod AN ANGRY CROWD ready to pounce upot the wearers of the orange the moment thoy should make thelr appearance. Larry Murphy, a speclal Constable, bud a short timo before the asscmbling of the police made snuffiidavit stative thut County-Master Graut, tirand-Marshal Ilamllton, Deputy lugrabam, ond four otuer prominent Orangomen named Uibson, Gavan, Crowell, and Lilburn, were actively engaged fo violsting the law regarding {licgal processions, Ou the strangth of thls af- fidavit, ¥ WARRANTS WERE JSBURD forthelr arrest, aud tuey wera subsequently served. Durlng the carly morning hours over 200 Irishmen arrived in the city by raiiroad nod boat from Quebec, the most of them armed. Several of them wero arrcsted for carrylug concesled weapous, and -subsuquently baited vut, when their Moutreal friends aworo they were golng to Toronto and thence to the Georgian Bay Jumber country. Tue mornlog tralnon the Grand Truuk Rosd brought in about 100 Orangemen, moatly from Cornwall. ‘They made anattempt to reach the Orange Mail, but could not get through the crowd which had assembled on 8t. James strect, near the Frouch 8quare, They then sought their Liotels, sad, Jater 1n the day, uttended services AT TUR BTANLEY-sTREET CHUACK, where tbey wers joined by nearly as many more clty Orangeten, who had come to the coucl slon that it would uot be * healthy ** o march from the hall. The special police seemod to tuke & spuctal pride o the position which bad been asslgued them. Taking thew individually and collectively, they wero about as disreputa- ble-looking & gang as could be turued out by auylarge vity o the United Btates, About 10 o’clock Mayor Besudry, accompanied by scveral of his Magistrates and strong Catholic sympa- thizers, made his eatrauce onthe scens. The Mayor VISITED THE ORANGE LYDAR, " and, after telling Countv-Mastef Grant that he was under arrest, urged himn to use his Influence aud abandon the proposed procession, Graunt accepted the situation of his arrest wheu the Muyor ssid be had & warrant for him, but, to the request uot to walk, be could give noan. swer without consultation, Tuereupon the Mayor left the hall, sod took his position on the opposite slde of the strect, where he sat like Urant awaltivg the surrender of Vicksburg. Bob Huret, a Young Britow, succecded ju gets tiug through the crowd aud alwost inslde the cordoa of pollce, when he was discovered snd given A CLIF ON TUX IEAD by a special policeman armed with & heavy wag- oo-spoke. He was knocked dowu aud kicked scvesul times, but Ouslly got swsy, carrylug wany bruises. The sight vf the two marshals, Hamliton sud Jogrsham, the ouo wesriug s &0ld tassel on his hat sud the other @ rosette, was more than the bowling mob could bear at 8 distance. Thuy made threatcning demonstrae tious, aud the spocial police sworu to malntain the peace could not resist the temptation to swing their batons in a menacing mavaer. At lust, when the police saw that the affulr was wrowlng hot, they seized the uutortunate Orango- wen whose nawcs bavo been meutioned. The Marshals were forcibly pulled from thelr borses, aud ths six were Immediately hustled off to the City-Hall. As the special police opened ranks to let the prisoners through, they made threat- :nlmr demonstratlons, and one of them went so ar as TO 11T ONE OP TNE UNFORTUNATS ORANGEMRN & wicked blow over the hesd. A few otuers threw stones at the victims of Cathollc hatred. The arrests of the aix Orangemen were seen Ly thelr brethren from the windoms of the hall, An emerzency meeting of the lodge was called, end ¢ was then re- solved not to walk, for the reason that nefther the city nor the Government would ®ive them definite protection, Mavor Beaudry was soon Informed of the action” taken by tho Lodee, and requested ncopy of it In writing. This was refuscd. Telegrams reciting the con- dition of sflairs were sent to the brethren at Ottawa, Belleville, Toronto, Brockvlile, and Kingston, To these, reolics filled with syin- pathy and promising personal ald if requested were returned. A telegram was slso sent to Premler Mackenzie at Ottawa, stating that the Orangemen were blockaded in thefr hall, and fo fmminent danger for taelr lives, and asking that the military be ordered to clear the streets. To thisa reply was re- celved siating that nothing more could be done, and the Orangemen must take their chances. Tho Cathollc Magistrates were Oying hither and thither among thelr conetituents, trying tokeep the boys qulet, and a sorry time they had of it. With the specisl police they couid use alittle influence, but the outside mob was worked up to such & frenzy as to bo ABBOLUTELY INCAPABLE OF CONTROL. Mayor Beaudry still eat opposite the Orsnge Hall. Judge Lourson, of 8t. Albans rald fame, was on the ground, trving to bring order out of chaos, Messengers were sent by the Mayor to the Orangemen to s ascertain what they were going to do. They replied that they would stay hero 8 week before they moved out, unless thy Masor or the military would pledge them pro- tection. The Mayor deciined to do anytbing of the kind unless they wonld takeoff the oficasive regalia and trappings. To this no answer was made, The military authoritics by this time BEGAN TO TIRR OF THE JOB. They did not fancy standing oun guard for s whole day in the brofling sun. Col. Whitchesd, of the volunteer force of the clty, was requested by Geb. Bmythe to do what he could to salve the tangle in which both parties had got. Ho visited the Orange Hall, and found that a lot of thie True Blues and Young Britons had come to the ball in their uniform, und that they had nothing Lo conceal It. If they only had some- thing to cover up the Orange decorations, they would go hume, provided protection was afforded them. Masor Beaudry, on belng in- formed of the resuit of ths contercnce, at once sent down tawn for A BUPPLY OF LINKN COATS, and promiscd protection Il the objectionable colors wers concealed. This provosition was wade known to the Orange leaders, but they refused to nccept until the streets wero cleared and the special pollce dlamissed. The speclals they regarded as more implacable foes than the rabble, Finding that there were some nnpes for & setticment, the Mayor acceded, and, fo & speech in English and French, instructed the mob to go Liome, as the Orangemen Lad asreed not to march or show their colors. This stato- ment was received with HOWLA OF DELIONT, and then the pollee commenced fo clear the streot. This was accompiished in a few min- utes. The Orangemcn atil) refused to come down. Theydid not like the appearance of tha specials, and determined not to move until the latter were disinissed, They wero accora- ingly called up Into loe, givon the right-about, and off they marched to the City-Hall, Then, after a brief consultation with the Mayor and sonie of the Maclstrates, carriages were brought futo requisition, aud the ‘Truc-Blues wers Invit- ed to come down and bo driven home. A few accepted the chance. Probably balf a dozen loads had been taken mway, when, all at once, thero was A LIVELY COMMOTION at the east end of the street, A carrlage came rapldly to within forty fect of tho Orange Hail. A Young Briton, named John Gitbert, with hils face all covered with blood, was lfted out, and nilowed to find his way to his brethren, All alune, near the corner of Craly street and St. Lambert’s Hill, his carrlage was nttacked by the mob. Ue was pounded with stoncs, drageed out of the carrisge, and pounded almost oo Jeliv. This fired the Orange hoart, and inapired the Catholics witn A TASTE YOI MORE. The few special polics present gloated over the offalr, and the volunteer troops composed of Orauzemen ouly wished that they could have an opportunity to mow down the Catholics. ‘Tho specials wero then ordered up by commaud of Ald. Wiloon, and su ambulance was sent for the wounded boy, Thoy refused to Iet hitn go, A wild rush was mado by scveral well-meaning but hot-beaded persons to rush up-stairs. Cuancs were fourlshed, and A LIVELY BIT OP A ROW resulted, fn which tho kindly-disposed were routed, The doors were closcd, end for some tlme no communlcation was held with cither purty, Col. Whitehead informied Gen. Bmytho of the situation, at the request of some of the Protestant Maglstrates, and requested him to visit the sceac, He did so, und, o belng again requusted to glve protection to the pent~ up Oruugo boys, declived, us bie bad no inatrue tlons, Alter somw further parleying between besteged and beslegers, the carriage scheme was azain resorted to, the Mayor sending two regulur policemen armed with carblues with each load, BY 6 o'cLoCcK all had Jeft the Hail. The fact wes soon made knowa, and, flftcen minutes later, the wilitary werw ordered to the encampmcents, the special police were disbauded, and ot a soul was to bo socy fu the vianity of the Orango (lall, except four policemen who wero placed on the ground for the protection of the property. County- Master Baker sud the other urrested Orange- wea subsequently gavo ball in $400 cach, & purc- 1y formal matier. T0-NIGUT there were many rumors lo circulation that the Orsvgemen contemplated celebratiog on Tues- day next, tho suniversary of HACKETT'S DEATI AND BURIAL. There are also atorics about 8 pruposca fnvasion by Upper Canaus Oraugewen, It 1s not Mkely. ‘The Master ot Hackett's lodge told your corre- spondent to-night that the celebration, it any 4id oceur (of which he had doubts), would be of an cntlrely private character, The Catholics bave won at best 4 DARREN VICTORY. The question s not yet sattled, and next 12th of July may flud = ditferent state of thivgs. ‘The busiuess people af this cliy ara much cha- eriued ovor the affuir, us it does uot leud any credit to the already not uver good name which Montreal bears.
