All others, nappy in the conscios- ness of looking their best, proudiy set their eails in the mild April air, and floated in tnomph ap or down the constantly varying stream ' of elegance. Light dresses were in the 1ninority, although some very lovely ones were seen. The handsomest toilettes were dark rich browns and green, glistening bronze effects with softer tones of delicate’ shades, giving an ary orightness suitable to epring. Velvet dresses, and dresses in which velvet oredominated, were largely shown, and a fancy seemed to exist forrich purple velvet, combined with & pecaliar silk, having a sheen of gold and geeen. A most pecalisr sort of silk ix this, but it is distractingly lovely, and besides is a great and expensive noyv- elty. A superb toilette had the skirt of very dars purple velvet trimmed with a_deep gathered flounce. The bottom of thix latter was finished by o minate pleating of silk about two inches wide. This sllk had o purple foundation, and snowed gleamy of zold ‘and an odd greenish bronze that rippled over the surface like waves. I fear this Is a rather incoherent description, but the goods is _indoscribable, though very besutiful. The polonaisc of silk i open on the left side from the waist down. The bsck is drawn high un % ehow the velvetskirt beneath, and the front s laidin three disgonal folds. A heavy chenillecord s laced across the opening at the left, and terminates inaloop and two tassels. A chenille ffinge, with an_elaborate headine, borders the bottom of the polonase. There i3 a sort of vest insertion, made of velvet and cat in_small sharp poiots at the bot- tom, seach point finished by a_small chomile wwael: The slecves are very odd; the upper part— that is, from snoulder to clbow-—is of velvet, cat where It ends in the ittle points tuat are seen on the vest. A great many of the most stylish dresses were made in the popalar KILT SKIRT STYLE. A very pretty one of Havane cashmere, fine and soft, was much admired. The skirt from the hips down is luid in smooth kilt plents that hang admi- rably. The vest and cost arc hanaromely and compietely made, and are trimmed with silk of the same visde. The scarf which takes toe place of the usual overdress I3 of silk, isdrawn about the Dips and knotted low on the left side somewbat to the back. A pecoliar but withal rather plessing modillcation of the Kilt skirt was ventured upon by 2 young lzdy who 18 quite_an_authority on dress, and whoee initiative 1n this move will probably be followed oy reveral others. In place of the usual full-length “pleats the skirt was covered by three cqually deep founces, Each dounce 18 lald in broud side-pleats; ana 18 edged by un inch-wide bizs told of-silk. In uil otner particulars the dress corresponds ‘with the ueual features of sucha toi- lette. [ think possioly the innovation may be suc- cesstul, especially amony youny laaies Who are very slender acd tall, because it vreaks the long plainness of effect.
