Spectal Correspondence of The Tribune, Dzs Moixes, I, Bept. 18,—Eighteen years ago, laws in this scction were very lax, amd horsc-thicyeawere plenty. The people were, toa great extent, aluw unto themselves; and, when a horse-thicf was caught by a possc of cltizens, the courts were seldom troubled with the case. Ahout that time, a horae was stolen in this vicinitt, and two men, named Bunker aud Reed, were suspected of the theft, and were pursucd, Bunker resided about two miles cast of thecity, in what at that time was o pretty hard nelghborhiood, The sudden dis- apyearanee of Bunker from his usual haunts nanced achase for him, Fe was captured In Tama County, by men named Simons and Lem Small, e was brought back, and Reed was alzo captured. On arriving at some timber about a inile from the city, Bunker was bound and strung up to . tree, n order to extort from him s confession; but, just as tho rope was drawn tout, Reed started to run, when both men started after him, leaving Bunker suspended. Be.ors they had captured Reed awd returned to Bun- ker he had died from steangulation. Reed was then strung up beslde Uhin and left. Both Simuas and Small fled the country. The for- mer has not heen heard of since. Abont twelvo years neo Small returned, and settied with his Tatnlly on a farnt a few miles from the clty, ‘The circumstances of the whole affair werg well knowa to citizens who were living here ot that thaes yet lre was not disturbed, it being the general opinion in those days that a horse-thict was better doad than shive. Yesterday an ol- ficer came here for the arrest of Small, s hav- ine been indicted n ‘Tama County for the mur- der of Bunker ana Recds A vity policemnan went with the oflicer Lo Small's furin, whers the arrest was made, and he was brought to the ¢ty toprocure it While walking down n street Jast night, Small and the oflicer went Into a saloon, und, when the ofliced rot ready to move on, Small was missing, and, at the preseot writng, s still missing, A TOUGI CUSTOMER.
