May 23.—T" sere seems to be no. abatement in the interest o anicasted in the pro- ceedings of the Assembly 3¢ the delegates in at— tendance. A few DO amivals were recordod yesterday. There are, now npward of 550 dele— gates prezent. One ‘sf the important questions tocome before tho /usemlily is that of LOTATION IN TIE OZFICE OF ELDERSHIP. { In the two proviowa annual moetings of tho Assembly this question has played & conspicuous part, resulting partially in favor of rotatior,, and it is said that the Com- mittee to whom /10 subject bas been intrusted for & ropor%, to ¥.e given at the meeting, wil Boey ceting, will be Anotber que.stion which the Assembly seems deterrined o settlo at this sitting, is that of 8dop'ding a 7zeneral formuls for 2 -ADMISSION OF NEW MEMDERS in',0 the Church. At present tho Church has no u aiform formula in counducting the initiatory ‘seremony. K THE SUBJECT OF CONSOLIDATION which had been made the special order for 10 ocrock to-day, was taken up, aud Dr. Herrick Jobuson claimed the floor.. He opposed the micghun of the majority re and endoavored £ show that there was no difficulty in managing 1 #he affairs of tho Roard of Publication as it now | exista. It is mnot desirablo for_ pastors i} to do their colporteur work. It leads to distrust acd want of respect, and is being abandoned ' by the Methodists. It is desirable to place this business under con- trot of the Board, and to give the Board full con- trol of its own revenues. ‘Tho secret of succesa of the Methodist Book Concern was in the fact that they tetain all the profits of thoir sales ta increase their capital and their circalation. To this end they bave cut off the contributiona {{ which thoy formerly made to relicf fands. They | think they can do more good by pushing theif circulation of pubtications than by aonating their money to other causes, however descrving they may bo. The wisdom of their couree hus been made manifest inits success. It will be & great error for the Presbsterian Church t0 take any portion of the profits of the Board of ?btcumn for the prosccution of evangelistic or) il JUDGE DRAKE, of Washington, who is widely known in the political as well as the religions world. and who is Judge of the Court of Claims in-Washington City, siso tho suthor of the famous Drake Con- atitution, made s leugthy, and in some places bitter, speech on the consolidation subject, whictl brought to the surface some gall, the only bit that bas beon stired up thus farfo the proceodings of the Assembly. Ho said that, while Darling and Crosby had boen making adroit speeches on tho topic of consolidation, and holding up the resulting fig- urcs of the Daplist and Methodist modes of mauagicg the finnoces of their churches as evi- denco of what the Presbyterian Church could do, they tell nothingof the different characters of tho people of those other denominations. Thera is the mistake. Ho had heard of a doctor who cured a carpeuter with giviog & 3-ounce dose of calomel. Tho next patieut was a black- smith, sud he gave lum a miwmilar dose, but 1t killed him, and the doctor had to write down in bis diary that 2 ounces of calomel would cure a carpenter but was sure death to a blacksmith. What may do very well for Baptists may not do for Presbyterians. Set your ITesbyterian minis- ters to book-peddling, aud their ministerial jutluence will wither in an_bour. That practica bas grown up with the Methodist aud Baptist brothers, and it does not appear s0 awkward in them. Put such s busivess as that upon the Presbyterian minister, and you cover him with shame and confogion of face. That would ba the result with the aversge Presbyterian minis- ter. Tho ezpenses of the Boards must, inthe naturo of thinge, be so much. Double your gifis, is tho remedy for getting rid of the enor- mous percentage. Judge Draks then closed his spesch -by a startler, which turned the faces of many to pale- ness, perbaps because they knew that bo was telling the truth, perhaps because be atartled them,’ A picture of THE SWING TEIAL was evidently before tho Judge as he ” emd: I wish to express before this bedy the firm, conscientious conviction befora God that thero are at Work in different parts of the Presbyterian Church of the United States 1nfluences and opinions that are inimical to the continued existence of tha Church in the integrity we intonded it should bave when 1t camo togother as s rounited Church. [Murmurs of “No,” *No."] [Brethren, 1 expected digsent from that. I expected it; but listen. There are those among you, ¥oung men, if not smong the gray-haired, that will remember this expression of mine this day, which I make from the depths of 3 troubled heart. 1f I am mistaken, only the more reasom nave wo to lift our hauds and thank God from tho bottom of our hearts tustI am mistaken ; but it is cropping out here ; it is cropping out there, and you will find it manifesting ithelf in one way in ons place, and another way in_an- other, all pressing against the standards of our Church, Pureand mmple, you will find it in antagonism, in open antagonirm, befors lopg. When Dr. Darling asks the question why our work of pubiication does not proceed mora rapidly, and with better eoffect. I answer thai Do fears tbat the heart of the Church is not in it.
