WHITE AND RED BTOCKINGE. ‘The fourth and 1ast game of the seriesbetween the Red Stockings, of St. Louis, and the Whites, waa plaved on the grounds of the Intter vester- dsy afternoon. For the second time this season the St. Lows boys failed to score a run in nine innings, so dificult was the * Charmer ” to bit, and so effectively was he supported by the ‘Whites. In the ninth inning the Rods led off with two good bats hit by Redmond and McSor- ley, and it looked as if they wero about to get that much-coveted rup, but & fiue stop and throw by Hines off Peters, and & double play by Force, sealed their doom, and the game closed with St. Louis * whitewashed ” nine times. The day was all that could be desired, there Leing just enough treezo to prevent tho heat Leing oppressive, and, the boys feeling well, they played a game which will bring the cham- pionship pennant to Chicago if they adopt it as artandard, and never fall below it. TWhere tho plaving was 8o generally good, it is, perbaps, reedless to make special mention of play, but catches by Cutbbert and Hiues, of the Whites, 2nd J. Dillon, J. Blong, and Peters, of the Reds, should ot go unnoticed. Force and Glenn led at the bat for the Whites, and Redmond for the Feeds. There were aboat 300 spectators present, ‘who doubtless feit well repaid in witnessing so f£ine & game, aud showed by their frequent ap- ylause of good play, that they appreciated the fine p ay on both sides. ATHLETICS. Wednesday afternoon, at £ o'clock, weather pormitting, profescional ball playing will be in- sugurated in this city by a game for the cham- pionship Leuween tho Chicago ‘nine and the Atbletics. of Philadelpbia. The latter orgamza- tion. s is well known, is dongerous oppouent for any combination of players, however good, to meet : hence a game that will be well worth see- ing oy bo anticipated. The Chicago nine, a8 is uatural, sro confident of winning. and it is only ~cazonzble to »uppose that the Philapelphians ontertain & similar fecling. THE FUTURE MOVEMENTS ©of tha Chicago nine have been definitely arran; ed for o month at least, aud will be as follows : TlLey will remuin bere until the 9th of June, tud meanwhile will play championship games with the Athletics on the 13th and 16h, with the 3iutnals on the 20th and 23d, with'the Hartfords oi: the 27th and 8.th, and with the Eoztons on thee 3d, Gtb, and Sth of June. On tha 9th they. will start on their first Eastern tour, to be absent probably a montb. rcago; Dall to-day ttie Bostons scored 23 to tho Balti- mores' 7. —— BILLIARDS. PERSONAL. George Slogson has returned to the city from New Orleans, much improved ip personal 2p- pearance and in gkill with the cue, He contem- plates opening o Lall of his own in a short time, anmeanwhileisready to play any game which ho stands a veagonable showtowin. Thereie somo talk about arranging a match between him snod Frank Parker or Lenis Sbar, but it is not likely that it will bo dono. Parker is away from home just now, and Shaw, whilo ho is unquestionably a splendid player, 2nd one who promises well for tho future, hus scarcely had experience enotgh to warrant his friends putting him against such a *hard man” as Slosson. A match betwoen the latter and Parker, however. might bo made, if the proper persons would take hold of it, and it would certaiuly attract a good deal of utten- tion. The bifliard business un-uestionably needs some sort of excitement to stirit up. X0 RESPONSE FROM GARNIER, Albert Garnier las not yet replied to Ubas- 8y’ recent challenge to play him a game of 1,000 points French caroms for €500 s side. If the challenge be a Lona fide one, which is doubj- ngo to play_s less number of counter-challe Ubassy will never ac- omts for a larger stako. ¢ Eept thiso. because he has discovered that he is not good in a short game. 1f Garnier accepts the 1.000-point challenge, the game will bo for nothing but gate-receipts eud 1eputation. A FIATD. B ‘Bessunzer, late of this city, has beon rosming around ihe Frat uader an assumed nome, with the hope of picking up_enough here aud there to pay his board by disquising his game. and {hen enticing unsuepecting countrvmen to play with bim for mones. He was expozed in Scran- ton. Pa., recently, and has gone no ons Knows whither. A NEW SCHEME, Tt is a well-known fact that thers are a num- ber of billisrd-nlayers in Fvancs who are tho cquals, if not the_superiors, of those who havo | already visited this country. Among them sro two whio are exid to be wonderfully oxpert, L. | Mangin and Msurice Vinneaus, snd Mr. Miclael Geary, of this city, proposes going after them in 8 weck or 50, and cagaging then for a tour in America. He has been moro or less connect- ed with all the French billiard-players who have been Lere, 2nd feels confident that the scheme which ho has now on foot will result success- fullv. A mecting of persons interested in the enterprise is called at Foley's at 8 this ovening. i e THE TRIGGER. ILLINOIS STATE SPORTSMEN'S ASSOCIATION. A meeting of the Exccative Committee of the Illinois State Sporimen’s Association was held yesterday afternoon at the office of J. V. Le- Moyne, Esq. There wero present Gen. J. D. Webster, W. F. Milligan, Robert Clarke, Abner Price, J. V. LeMoyue, and Mesers. Martin and Shino. iy The Committee was chiefly occupied in dis- cuesing tho arrangements for tho gun trial in connection with the Juno tournsment, snd the matter was referred to Geo. Webster to prepare rules and conditions of the gun trial, and renort at a meeting of the Committee tobe held Thurs- day. e Committes acted upon and accepted the following apolications for membership: . B. Earle, Schoolcraft, Mich.; J. T. Bonfield, Chi- F. W. Taplin, Chicagt T. M. Tavlor, Lexington, Kv.; Willinm Solitt, Chicago; Will- jasm Chittenden, Chicago; R. B Orwran, Union Stock-Yards: J. J. Clark, Baltimore. The subject of shooting rules to govern con~ tests for the Association prize was discussed at some length, and the Committee adjourned until Thursday pest. THE PRAIRIE SHOOTING CLUS of Chicago will hold their enaual meeting Tues- dav, at 8 o'clock p. m., in_their rooms, No. 179 Madieon street, when their officers for the ensu- ing vear will be elected. Members who haye not pard their dues by that time will be dropped from the rolls. = CRICKET. MEETING LAST NIGAT. A meoting of cricket-players was held last ovening ot the Sherman Housc, and wes quito largely attended. The only business of impor- tance trameucted was the appointment of Mr. George E. Gooch as Treasurer of the Club, and Mr. Thomas Wright ns Captain of the field. Several stending committees wore aleo_appoiut- cd, and a general desire was manifested zfin the players who are to compose the eleven should Dbegin practice in & week or ten days. —_———————— A WOWAN'S THOUGHT ABOUT THE PRES- BYTERY. Tothe Editor of The Chicaao Tribune : Sim: One of the most singular features of Prof. Swing's trial by the Presbytery of Chicago is the constant attendance of a very large num- ber of ladies. So profound and exciting i the interest they have manifested that the question bas often ocemred to me, Will the Coming Woman be a Controvereialist? What means all this devotion to the discussion of an abstraction, if there be not in woman gome slowly-awaien- ing, hitherto-uasuspected power in, or pacsion for, religious controversy? Should such prove to bo the truth, wise indeed have been the doubt- ers of woman's capacity for improving the condi- tion of the world by admission to o1l the equally right and wrong rightsof men. A pretty, golden- hawred, diwpled creature said to me, * Prof. Patton is really shead of the defenso 1n hiascuto knowledge of what he is about.” And I thought, Surely woman can bo just if o sweet sud gentle & being as Lady Goldilocks can see any good in the man whom another sister bad just eaid re- minded her of Ruth Garrett's description of an uncomfortable old muid: ** Vinegar and mus- tard mixed on a steel knife.” Some of the good things heard at the Presby- tery are worth recording. Nothing could be bet- ter than this bright repartee of Prof. Swing to Prof. Patton's inquiry, * How do you feclto-day, Prof. Swing ?” With face profoundly serious, &nd tone comically eepulcbral, the reverend de- fendant replied: ““Ah! Prof. Patton, Idon't feel at all well to-day; my digestion is o mnch worse than my theology that I feel pretty bad apout it.” There is & striking contrast in the physical ef- fect Prof. Patton’s meancr of thinkiug has upon the “human warious” who are on his side (the left of tho houee), and the marks that cre left bv the reasonable theology of those who st at the right of the Moderator.” Bro. Ely, with his pinched face. hollow chest. and sharp voice; and other thin minieters of a thin religion, aro per- fectly matched br the angalerities, acidities, and snuppish eharpness of their “Youog chief,” Prof. Patton ; while the Rev. R. W. Patterson, and Ar. Noyes, and Mr. Hurd are physical beroes, worthy of the sweet, sirong, generous rehgion preached by David Swing. A man must bavo either a big head or 2 big body to accomplish any good work in this world; and few of Prof. Pai- ton's adherents bave any heads or bodies worth mentiouing. John Forsyth is the only large man on the leit, and he is large physically rather than otherwise. Prof. Patton’s physiognomy is very curious and Fet very characteristic of the man's mental acu- men. I can thiuk of nothing so like Prof. Pat- tow's faco 88 an infnitesmal snow-plow. His hoad is.amall, bis forehead is low aud narrow, his hair lizht'in color and in_quantity: and. as if his blue eves were not cold enough to suit his disposition, Nature has forced him to frame and glaze them, and his glasses 2dd a strangely in- creased eharpness to his face. The nose is long, but the chin is larger and more pointad, and the Lollow cheeks, aud thin, blue lips, malie up tho enow-plow resemblance. And, gince Prof. Patton will drive through such huge drifts of theological snow and ice, why sboaldn’s he look like the men Lo has mado himself ? When I began going to the meetings of the Prosbytery, my thought was, on seeing Prof. Patton, behold a man who répresents Torquemads 'in the ninetcenth ceutury; but ihere must be & mistake. Turquemads was en honest bigct; he _would have tortured himself if he believed himsolf tainted with Leresy. Doubiless he was subject, to infirmities of temper,—eimilar to those which Prof. Pat— tou has shown when he conldn't have his own way; but the Inquzitor did penance on his Lmees, with lushings of the scourge, for Ais fall- ings from rigid grace; whilo Dr. Patton i8 too absorbed in making his name and fame odions to tarry fot penitence over Lis insults to the just [OSTONS V8. We bhesrd an esger housowife say, ‘‘What ecouomical pickles thet man would make! One would need 8o little vinegar.” Having carefully followed the courso of Prof. Patton throngh the whole trinl, it is impossiblo to believe 8o well of him oven a8 & witty man back of us sud, when asked what he thought of Pat- ton: “Why, that man is s copscientious jack- ass.” i A nerrow man by natore, but sn ambitious man by cultivation not satisied with the noto- riety be gained by his prosccution of the Rev. T. L. Cuyler, of Brooklyn, because lio permitted 1li6 good and gentle Miss Smiley to preach in his pulpit,—he desires to sg;nnd the kmowledge of his name still farther. He wishes tohe con- sidered & phenomenon of l:ialy. His speech be- wrayeth him, No man with such a soap, snup, at tho end of his tongue, can boa meek and lowly follower of the dear Christ. The prosecutor may possibly be all right as to his faith ; but, if one was to judge by works or words of grace, it does seom to mo that the balanco would be catly on Prof. Swiog’s stde. The differance between the religion of these two Professors is illustratod by the old fish-atory Prof. Swing comes ly on the flowery m, apd. with-the per- dorn ily, fishes in tho ful, the obabilities are, judging from the fenl T P f of New York lotters, e O N oclin. to ao- | game.
