Wasursorox; D C., March 21.—The investi- gstion into the aflairs of the District of Colum bia was continued to-day, but did not result in the producsion of any startling information. As the inves!igation proceeds, the fact is constsut- 1y becoming more apparent that the job uader- taken by the Committee is one of EXCZEDINGLY LARGE DIMENSIONS. Not only this, but almost every step a new com- ‘plication springs up, 1equiring for its settlement the combined wisdom of the uble geatlemen composing the Committee. Tho memorialists ‘thus far bave failed to make any eerious head- way sgainst the District officers, but, of _course, it is impossible at this stags of the proceedinges to predict that there will ba a fail- ure on thair part to prove their allegations. ‘Thst tbe DISTRIOT GOVERNMENT ARE APPRERENSIVE -was wsde manifest to-day by the circumstance hat Juage Joremish Block, beretofore under- stood to 1epresent oniy John O. Efans, took chargo of the efense. At the beginaing of the inves:igation the newspapers in tho interest of ibs Governmont assailed the memorialists for going ontside the District and amploying such en ¢.ent counsel as tae Hon. Saruel Shellabar- g::i. of Ohuo, 2nd Judge Merrick, of XMatyland, a INDULGED IN CONSIDERABLE SWAGGER aver the_fact that Gov. Mat~ tingly, Hanington, and Stanton, bave certaialy 1done very well thus far, and it is to bo regro.ted, {for their sake at least, that their employers. ehould think it necessary to solicitother counsel, ‘The first businesa of io-day’s session was to bear an | EXPLARATION FRGM THE CIHIEF AUDITOR jof the District with referencs to the discrepancy red by Judge Wilson in Contrect No. 40, whereby the Governor reportod tho payment $43, to s coairsctor when the {voncher showed he had only got. 35,000, Witness, explained that the cost of ~ mate- xial fornisbed bythe Board of Public Works |ahonld have been added to the voucker, aad tho itwo amounts wonld meke right the Guvernor's \figures. 3lr. Ouo the contrary, he ciaims to bave beep in svapathy with the opponents of the comrrehen- sivo plan. M. Latta's festimony was then resumed, and :it was then sscertained that H. D. Cooke was ‘“Governor of the District at the time ho advanc- . od the sum of $25,000to Latta & Kilbourn, as fTrustees, to be invested in real estate, Mr. ZLatts was usked to state the name of the per- sons for wnom he acted as Trusteo. This inter- ropation way put for the purpose of sscertaining if any of the officers of tho District were INVOLVED IN THE REAL-ESTATE RING or pool, represented by Kibourn & Latta as ‘Trusiees or go-betweens. In response witness anssered: I sball do nothing of the kind. 1 swill eay under my solemn_oath that no officer of he District of Columbis or member of the Board of Public Works is includad in the trast.” Mr. Thurman—Would your suswer tend to crimina’e vou ? Mr. Thuorman then vited the case of the stolen Treaty of Wash- jngion, wherein newspaper corceapoupents had stated they bad not received it from aoy Sepator orofficer of theSenate. The Senate bag, notwith- standing, commuted v¥0 corrasrondents for con- tempt. This admonition produced a_soothing effect on Alr, Latia’s nerves, and ho fell back on dofective memory, and finally it was agreed to adjourn till Mondsy, when Mr. Latts snd his partoer will ba exvected to produce all tho = DEEDS OF PROFELTY PRRCHASED Py them as Trustees for membess of tho real estale ring. Lveryouly ssems to think that the examina- v, 0 Lata, if sLoroughly mede, o8 it without douby will be, will bring out some facts which the.District officials will find it < DIFFICTLT TO ACCOUNT for or explein away. ‘“L'ho deedn of trast do not phow the namesof those who have confided to th: firm of Eiboune & Lattssach enormous amounts of money, avd tue whole affair i3 ap- parentiy ivolvod in more mystery than would b found wecos:ary in the conduct of erdmarily ‘honost business tranascticns. On the announcement of the result, the 1ittle schoolma’ams, who had been watching with tlie most intense anxiety tho course of events from the gallers, flocked out with beaming faces to carry the news to the long-sifering boarding~ house keepers. [To the Associated Press.] . YWaspINGTOS, March 21.—At the meeting of the District of Columbis Investizating Commit~ {eo this morning, connsel for the memonalists offered to put in ovidence & vumber of letters ond other manuscripte showing the experience of other cities with regard to patent pavements. Counsel for the Distr:ct suthodities objected to the acceptance of such an unsworn staiement, and the Committes adjourned till 1 o'clock to examine papersand consider the questivn of their dmunsibilicy. B Mitor tlio yecess, James M. From replies and statements made by Stewart, it sppeared that propertv to_ the segregate amouant, {361,491 was purchased by thelatterlon the joint account of Stewart, C. J. Hillyer, and other parties in 1871, and that Stewart disposed of his interest in March, 1873, at an advance of §18,000. Stewart made g statement of various personal reatons which induced him to build subse- quently, and said beforo building he DID NOT ENOW WHAT IMPROVEMENTS WERE TO IE MADE on the streets around hus property, and that he bad never consulted with the Board of Public Works on the subjcct. The propery Slewart spoke of had no connection with the property boueht by Kilbowrn & Latta, for Kiboura as ‘Trustee. Latia thon stated that he tad purchased a considerablo amouut of real estate in the north- western part of the city as Trustes for verions persons, none of whom were in any maoner eitber directly or remotely counected with any person or persons belouging to the District Government. Latta was directed to . BRING THE DEEDS. WITI NDX on Monday. A COMPBOMISE OURENCY BILL. ‘Wasansaroy, D, C., March 31.—The Senate Committee on Finance held a special mesting to-day at which a compromise financial measmo was agreed mpon, to be reported to the Senate next Monday. The bill will fix the amonnt of greenback consideration ¢ $382,000,000, thus legalizing the reissue of that portion of the £44,- 000,000 lezal tender reservo which is now out— standing, and making it part of the permanent circulation. The amount that bas boen reissued and wlhich is now outstanding 18 something over $25,000,000. The bill will also AUTHOBIZE YREE BANKING on the Nationsl Banking system, but will con- tain s requirement tnat legal-tender notes shall be retired from circulation proportionately as new National Bank notes sre 1ssued. This latter provision is regarded as a measure of contrac- tion, but tho preceding anthorization for keep ing in circnlation the $25,000,000 legal tendera that have been received from the reserve is con- sidered a substantial victory for the advocates of an increased volume of currency, who, it is uo~ dersidod, will claim in the Senato that the princi- ple having béen thus admitted as regarde a por~ tion of the $44,000,000 rceerve, the whols ahould bs accordingly placed in circalation. s gl NOTES AND NEWS.
