4 Lrerod fo him' to ol EXGEEDINGLY SUSPICIOUS. startling Revelations Concerning 4 Recent Diamond Rob- bery. queer Conduct of & Police Captain--- A Case Worth Investigating. There is now in the County Jail a young man, who, elthough convicted of & crime, is undoubt~ the victim of a plot concocted for the pur- of shielding others and covering the villiany D“pwminent Police Captain. This youth was ipicted with 8 much oldor man for robbing the psgui of Lizzie Moore, on Clinton street, on the 215t of March last. It will be remembered shat the bouse was entered early in the morning py threo men, who ecemed to be familiar with o fact that Miss Moore had & large pomber of dizmonds. They designated them, aod demanded that ehe hand over, under penal- tyof forfeitiug her life, three diamond rings, a gismond cross, and a gold watch. A gentleman ufriend,” who was also in the room, was_re- quested to deliver up his watch, which he did. Sho property taken by the thieves was worth £,000, 20d in the morning was reported . to the jos suthorities. The headquarters detoctives {sid tolearn anything of the jewelry or thieves, batina week or two throe men were arrested bys sergeant, and two of the rings and the cross wero returned to the owner by one of the Cap- isins. The prisoner, though fully aware that beis being sacrificed to shield some one else, re- fied to reveal any of the hidden cir- of the " csse. The suppres- don of the evidencs and the loquaciousness of Miss Moore has, however, partially unfolded toths vition of & few persons something of which they were confident, but could not rely cpon for want of proof. Fromall that can bo lramed, the robbery was planned by an intimate frend of tho Captain (although he may not Eeve been co tof it). This is seomingly izdiggutable by the conduct of said friend. He left, and in slont t0 minutes a Sergeant and two police- zen walked in and immediately arrested the two tlioves. They were taken to one of the pre- cut gtations and locked wp. Two or thres bours sfterwards, tho Captain’s friend met e thid man on Harrison street, and puged & policeman * planted ” to catch him, sad he, L0, was taken into custody. Miss Moore 25 informed of the apprehension of the alloged thicves, aod, npon g at the police station, w5 told that her jewelry “had been pawned in Fitsburgh,” and " that it would be returned for £,030. Ho may have forwarded ivio Fittsburgh, for within a week two diamond f2gs snd the cross were returned to Miss Ifoore, vils reminder that the other ringand two riches would bo forthcoming when the 8570 siiitional wero paid. A frightfol runaway occurred yestorday oven- ing at 8 o’clock. The horses of omnibus No. 228 of the Citizens' Line, became unmanageable at the corner-of Randolph and Market streats. The driver waa intoxicated, and during the progress of the tesm was thrown from his seat, and sustained injuries that will probabiy prove fatal. The horses dashed down Market Btroet, to the corner of Madison, whera they ‘were stopped by Officer James Carlin, of the West Side Railway Company. Carlin exhibited & good deal of bravery in the act, as the horses wero going at break-neck speed. Several ladies and getlemen who were in thé 'bus at the time, were more or less bruised. The driver was taken ‘o the Amory Police Btation. His name could not be ascertained. Long ago, when men shot their way to fame and fortune in Ireland, an Irish lawyer chal- lenged a friend to meet him at & certain hour, in 8 in park known 8s *‘ The Fifteen Acres.” His logal habits were strong, even in an invita- tion to death, and the chailonge read, *Meet me in the Fifteen Acres, be the same more or less.”. That gentleman’s descendant must be on the Iocal staff of the Times, and he must have written the ridiculous account of tho street-car muss which occurred on Friday evening, 88 all the readers of Tae ‘TRIBUNE knew. The Times did not get the facts, though thatis nothing new. It might as wel have given a lucid account 88 follows: *‘ A man was struck with a big stone on State street this ‘Wweek, be the same more or less.” The gloomy corridors of the County Jail were yesterdaysgain made the scene of a marriage ceremony. Of course Justice C. B. Dagget, tho parson of the Judiciary of Chicago, oficiated. The parties to the affair were Samuel Wilston and Deanle, both of whom figured some- what prominently in & bastardy _trial before Justice Van't Woud last Thursdsy. Upon Vilston's consenting to murry tie complaiaanty ghe withdrew the which sent him to prison, and herself o all the necessary ar- Tangements for the consummation of the nup- tials. It is probable that s love of liberty did more to cause Wilston to congent to the marriage than anything else. The bride has pursued the fellow who was yesterday pronounced her hus- band far and near, and her marrisge seemed to lease her very much. There are few who would grudge her her new posscssion. ‘There are & great many ways of making: mone{. Bome work for it,—a elow way; others marry it, —a genteel way; others go into the confidence business,—an uncertain and mean way.. The last dodge is to got ‘K newsboys' and boot- Dlacks' pionio, rope in the little fellows, pretend they are objects of affection and solicitude, and mske: money by it. MMr. Bcammon has a news- paper in this city, » morning publication, and 8s his employes have not much to do, they propose to get up an excur- sion for the gamins, under the sauspices of Mr. Scammon. As Mr. Bcammon is believed o owe the achool fund a large sum of money which should be spplied to the education of these boys, he can’ evince the sincerity of his desiro to promote their welfare—present and fu- ture—by forking over the amount. After that is done an excursion into the country will be in order; but until then the excursions had better be let} in the hands of Dr. Miller and other gen- tlemen, who managed them well honestly last year. . & On : Friday night, at 12 o'clock, Roundsman Barthelon A{ld 552:!‘5 Noonan and Galligher made s visit ‘to the gambling-rooms of Adam Smith, No, 191 Olark street, When elon Iknocked at the door he heard an unusual amount of noise behind it, and then for s moment all was still, and pretty -soon the door was opened and the oflicers ware admitted. only were found in. the room. To-morrow the now rooms of the Wilson Sew- ing-Machine Company at No. 197 Btate street, ncxt to the corner of Adams street, will be thrown open for the inspection of the public. This Company has been later than some of the others in leaving the remote parts of the clty to which they ware driven by the fire, but it has dono g0 merelyin order to have the time to finish off the new quarters in the richest and most expensive manuer. This place fronts both on Btate and Adams streets, not including, how- ever, the cormer store. It thus runs back 120 feet, making one of the finest show- rooms in the city. The striking featurs of this room {8 not its size, however, but the handsomo, tasteful, and even sumptuous manner in which it is fitted up. It shows everywhere that it has beon done under the supervision of a man of ro- finement and lfood taste. The floor is covered with a bosutiful carpot, which came from Btewart's establishment in Now York, and cost $1,500. Tho coiling is frescoed, by a Chicsgo artiat, 80as to form o perfect match for the car- pet. There is nothing lond or exaggerated in color. ~The wupper part of the walls is covered with ~ arabesques, aud _ that part just sbove base-boards is marbled, while the intermediste space is colored with s refreshing neutral tint. The costof this frescoing alono was §8,500, while the total expense for fitting up the room wWss nearly §10,000. During the day, abundant light is farnished from the grand windows on the two streets, while by night it is lit up by six elogant gold-gilt twelve-light chandeliors. Tho thrond, silk-twist, and needlo-case, which is of carved ‘walnut, and is surrounded by a carved walbut marble-top counter, is on the right-hand side of the main room, near the centre. At the ends of this counter aré two magnificent bronze 5, cast from Kuhemn Bpecially drawn for the Company, A hundred feet back from the Btate street entranco oxtends a partition of black-walnut, which, like all the handsome fur- niture, is made by Patzack & Bchultz, of this city. “‘This partition is in itself & work of art, a model of simple eleganco, That part of the establishment fronting on Adams street is re- served for office purposes. Still beyond on Adams streot is a large room used for u{jmfing, ‘whero all the machines go before they leave the rooms. The Company also leases the entire basement, covering an ares of 5,000 square feet, which is used lurtglcking purposes. Tho merits of the Wilson sewing-machine are 400 well-knovn to need any. ugecul aise. A purely Western machino, it has ‘to fight against heavier odds than any of its competitors, for they wore ail united agains and s;&gaxiority mado it a dangerous rival, to ba crushed out at all hazards, if poseible. But Ar. ‘Wilson has fought his gcod fight, and has won against all opposition, & fact plaialy proven by his ability 1o fit up rooms as elegant as those which are to be opened to-morrow. These ma- chines have won guch general favor, since they are sold at prices 25 per cent Iower than any other first~clasa machine, and since they are simple to_handle, durable, ‘and of un- limited capacity. Each purchaser also obtains a written warrant of his machine for five years. The manager of the offico here is Mr. George Bawyer, agentleman of great business casncity, who haa been here for & year, and who, during that time, has made for himself & host . of friends. This machine is not only the invention of a-Western man, but it is also made in the West, the manufactory being at Cleveland, a five-story bilding 180 feet' by 60, where about 500 workmen are employed. ~ No matter whether ono wishes to buy a ma- chine or not, there will be no place on State street which will be better worth visiting to-mor- row than the magnificent rooms which the Wil~ son Bewing-Machine Cox:gsny have occupied and which are an unexcelled specimen of Chica- go workmanship and good taste. Sad State of Rayti. Bishop Coxe, in the account of his recent epis- copal visit to Hayti, writes that for the past six ears Mr, Holly, the chief agent of the American ‘piecopal Mission in that island, has devoted his energies principally to work, not for the En- glish-apeaking people, but for the evangelization of the poor natives of the island, 500,000 of whom are virtually heathen, though the religion of the tountry is nominally Romish. " condition of most of the blacks is very like that of natives in the heart of Africa. Theirre- ligious condition is that of barbarism. The cannibalism of religious superstition ia stiti very prevalent in many partsof Hayti. Children are prepared for the rite by first giving them & root orbark which stupefies them. “Then they are fattened for the sacrifice, after which the worshi feed upon their bodies. This sacrifice thoir superstition demands once a year, and both Episcopal and Wesleyan missionaries bear tostimony to its existence, asserting that the practice is systematic, and not occasional. The government has not sufficient strength to Suppress thfimh’cn, although it has o the attompt. Bishop Coxe .recalls a conversation held with the exiled President Gefrard, whom he visited in the island of Jamaica. ‘I did my best,” said the President, ‘‘to put down this cursed Vaudou worship.” The Bishop asked if it were possible that they thus s: ced chil- dren to their heathen god. “Alas!™ was the answer, “I was obliged to shoot eight men for cannibalism fo strike terror into those esned befora the additional force arrived but for whom I. could not reach. Cannibalism is strong there ; and it was for that reason I am here, an exile, becanse I made war upon it.” In this land marriage is an excoptional institution ; 80 much so that oneof the missionaries, laboring in the mountains, with beaming eyes a8 a0 improvemont on the former state of things that during six years he had celebrated six mar- ringes, T threo points which the Bishoj thinks cught to b prosented first and foremos to the people of theso islands are : the necessity of Christian marringe, sanciification of the Lord’s Day, and the knowledge of the Bcrip- tures, of which even the nominal Christians of the islands seem vory ignorant.. —— ‘Windfalls for Dociors.
