16 THE- CHICAGO DAILY TRIBUNE: SUND. JONE 15, 1873 OUR EXPOSITION. - Encouraging Reports from Financial Department. Contracts to the Amount of Near.ly $200,000 Already Let by the Architect. The maragers of the Inter-State Industrial Exposition have determined to push forward the work with all reasonable speed. Mr. J. Irving Pearce, the Tressurer, reports encouragingly from the financial department, and there is no doubt that the additional $100,000 of stock will be disposed of in a few days, if indeed it is not alrosdy taken. Mr. Pearcoand eight other gen- tlomen have chargo of the eale of the stook, but rone of his colleaguos have reported to him yet. Bince Tuesday last, when §t waa decided to issue the new stock, Mr. ‘Pearce alone has sold shares as follows : 0. 7. Stongh, 1; Samuel J.Walker, 10 ; Daniel Webster, &5; Richards & Gooch, 25 O. Follansbeo & Bon, 1; Charles A. Gregory, 5; Frank Parmelee & Co., 10; Jonn Dunlevy, 1; George H. Rozet, 5; S. H. Harris, 1; O. H. Lane,1; Parks & Kein, 1; D. B. Richardson,3; A. D.Rich,1; James E. Tyler, 1; 8. G. Taylor, 1; E. D. Ferry, 1; H. N. Wheeler, 1; Colby & Wirtc, 1; Belding Bros., 1; Steele & Price, 1. This makes 53 new shares of $100 esch sld by Mr. Pearce, besides the following additional Ebares gold by him fo_porsons already holding Btock: N. K. Fairbank, 9; D. B. Fisk & Co., &; Uitcheock & Walker, 1t ‘A. Reed & Som, 93 Gardner & Gould, 10. The total number of ghares sold by Mr. Pearce alone since Tuesdsy i387. These shares were taken without solicita~ ton. 1f his colleagnes do as well all tho shares will bo taken befora tho end of this week. The Fholesale grocery men took only one share each, and it i8 expected that they will four more cach, making 120 seon, therefore, that there is no doubt of the needful being forthcoming to the full amount required. Mr. Boyington, the erchitect, has let contracia for the building as follows 1 $114,800 21,500 Pile-driving, O, B, Green. ... X Tsland Gisss Company. T H. RiCB.cseoaseiss slazing, Heath & ter of a million. Work will be begunon Mon- day, when Mr. Green's men will set to work driviog_piles for ike foundation. ‘The outer iles will be sunk 27 feet deep, and the inner Jow 14 feet. Brick arches will connect the piles, snd on the arches the superstructure will rest. The bonds reguire the building to be ready for use by Sept. 15, though it may be finished fifteen dnys earlier. Of itself the structure will be o thing of beauty and s joy for a long time. Agpl.ie;tiuna for spaco are being recoived by the Becrotary, Mr. lloynolds, from many parts of the conntry, indicating thst contributions will come from all over the land. Proprietors of Steam engine manufactories have offered o sup- Ply all the stesm power necessary to move all the machinery free of cost, but, Of course, none of the offers have been accepted, it being too early to take decisive action. The oatlook is cheering and full of promise. Every citizen of Chicago must feel sn interest in the snccess of the undertakiog, snd if Chicago does not “ h‘?& up an Exposition” in_three months that will be a credit to the entire North- weat, it will not be the fault of the unfailing en- . ergy that is embarked in the enterprise. ANIMAL PUTREFACTION. To the Editor of The Chicago Tribune: 8m: In your issue of the Sthinst. Ifinda communication purporting to be & reply tomy articlo on ** Animsl Putvefaction,” published in your columns on the 1st inst. Although Ihave 70 desire to enter into & controversy with & lay- man (as this correspondent pleases to style himsolf ) on & subject of scientific research, yet ‘his perversions and misstatements are such as to make n correction of them necessary. 1 am asked why it is that the condensersin ‘Pridgeport rendering establishments do not con~ dense ail the volatile oils and fumes that escape from the rendering-tanks, while I distinctly stated that these volatile substances could be ¢ condensed or burned ;" in other words, that the less volatile ones could be condensed, and the others burned. Thus overy sensible man must have understood it. By the way, I may stato that the condensers which so far have been tried in Bridgeport are, as is generally admitted, by no mesns parfect, and those trials of which sour correspondent speaks 80 emphatically have, ‘Tntil recently, been conducted and devised by 1aymen, of whom likely Mr. “H.,” your core- spondent, is one. Further on, when I state that certain of the products of putrefaction are used in other mix- turee as perfumeries and flavors for eatabl nol will doubt the truth of this at.ltem::‘ while wing that the butyric, valerianic, and other ethers which form & portion of the disa- greesblo odors in question, are the basis of most of our artificial ~perfumes -and flavors, 88 well as of the delightful odor of many a lovely flower. Do dnywhere -of elementary constituents? Are com- binations of volatile acids element substan- ces? What does the Isyman's catechism eay on that point? ‘Novertheless, it pleascs Mr. “ H.,"” the lsymau, to make me speak of elementary constituents, in order to gt up some gronnds from which he can draw conclusions of. his own, the nonsence of which he thon proves with great complacency by his catechism on chemistry. It in a fact probably not stated in the anony- mous. layman's “First Reader on Chom- istry,” but nevertheless correct, that, in s physiological int of ~ view, the substances of the smell of a flower, however Jovely or disegreeable it may be, boars the same relstion to the flower and to vegetable life that the excroments bear to tho animal and o animal lifo. Both the smoll of the flower and that of the excrements of the animal are products of regressive metamorphosis. As tothis layman's . proposition, which ho quotes from bis * First ar on Chemustry,” on the intermingling of gases with_the atmosphere, I wonid et Bt to consuit his ** Second Reader,” when he gets that far. Probably he will there find somothing ofl the intermingling of vapors with the atmos- phere. But, as to the porversion of my statements, I find some consolation in seeing that the chemist “ whose name was Liebig ™ does not fare better at the layman's hands. He goes on to state that this chemist had described & process’ which he callod eremacausis, according to which, cholera- poizon, if it chanced to come in contact with putrefying will breed mew_and enormous quantities of c‘:olem-poim. Now, the foct is, Liebig has writien on_eremscansis, which, in plain words, means simply decay, Or & gnmeeu of slow combustion or oxydation, and so ave other eminent chemists before snd after him; and allsgree that, in this; s particolar ferment is prod ‘whi duce decay or slow oxydation of decsyable and oxydablo substances with which it comes in con- tact. But neither Liebig nor any one of them claims or intimates Kins, originally published in the Louisville Cou- rier, in which be says: 4 Where thirst ensues, givo sa much cold water, if prefarred, 8s do- rod” . Tn another valuable treatise on the same sub- Jact, by Dr. Hamlin, of Constantinople, and who hns had great experience in the trestment of cholera,he says: * In all stages, and especially in advanoed cases, thirst creates intenso suffering. The sufferer craves water, and, 83 sure 8s he gratifies the craving, the worst symptoms re- and he falls a victim to the transient grati- fication. The only safe way is to have & faithful friend or attendant, who will not heed his ent les,” ef Now, the two statements are so entirely op- posod to each other, and the point itsel{ seoms of such vital importance, that I take tho liberty of asking you to insert, this artiole in TaE TaIs- UNE, in order that our leading phimcmu may be able to give their views on the subject, and thus ensable the ‘fu'hfic to kmow which course to pur- gue should the occasion arise. Respectfully yours, L. GOLDSMITH. How Cholera Was Abated. The sudden abatement of cholera in Now Orleans, Memphis, and Nashville msy be attrib- uted to cleanliness, esting only fresh'vege- tables, snd by the froe use of that valuable disinfectant, Bromo Chloralum. This is the course recommended bymedical men all over the country. Let our cltizens be warned in season. et o o s Holman Hunt’s Shadow “of the Crose.” M. D. Conway #n Cincinnati Commercial. Iehall be very much interested to observe what the publio will say to Holman Hunt's new gilcme, The Shadow of the Cross,” when ey see it. It will'be exhibited next autumn, and thus far bas been shown only to the artist's friends. It is possible that no one will dare to criticise & picture for which (with rights of en- graving and_small replics) the artist hasre- coived mear £12,000 ; but it will require the fall weight of that a fact to make the public sdmire the nude and_decidedly muscalar Christ which it contains. The theme of the picture is that, a8 time goes on, Mary, seeing no indication that all the angelio prophecies wnuminfiiher son are to be ed, reinforces her faith by looking over the rich cflafim’mada to him in infancy by three Kings. ile kneeling over the open box in which she koeps these treasures, her eye is caught by a shadow on the wall. Je- sns, who has been engaged at his carpentering otk (the Eastern tools, the shavings, etc., lis all around),'bas psused for a moment near the window, and, as if fatij stretches his arm out on each side. His ghsdow is reflected on the wall, making, as stated, the cross which his mother observes. In this large picture—five or six square yards in ares—the artist has displayed great letminf, and has madethomostof his lon, Pesidence in Jerusalem ; but the extent to whic he has introduced the carpentry shows that ho has not studied some points that he mlilll: have 5?‘ at better in England—particularly this, that e Greek word * Tekton” applied to Joseph and translated * carpenter,” more generally means a builder,” or house architect, which is what Joseph probably was. -Nevertheless his noble picture (in mn{xreapacm) indicates o de-- fermination to break throngh some, at least, of the conventionsl notions and sentimentalities surrounding sacred subjects, and especially in his represontation of Jesus 88 & vigorous, Fiuowy, bronzed man, .with s girdle around the Toios. 'The face is not €0 unconventional, since the long hair of the Nazarene is given, but even there the usaal effeminacy is happily absent. ASpectacle BEarely Witnessed. From the Rochester (N. ¥.)
