The nuisances of whistling and yelling are among the customs on the Board of Trade which would be more honored In tho breach than in the observance. The roportors’ ares was treated to-day to a prolonged and lond-whistled version of & low concert-room song, several times re- peated, which ought not to have been perinitted. IThe subject of a through-frelght railroad from Chicago to the Esst is now being seriously dis- cussed by a number of our prominent business men, and it is probuble that a definite movement will be made ere long towards ecuring the building of such & route, which would be a great agement, would materiolly enhance the selling prices of produce in_this market, by lessening the cost of transporting it to other points. ! . THE MARKETS. *The leading produce markets were more active to-day, and grain’ was_generally bigher, whils Emfimm wero weak. The greater strength on readstuffs was a direct consequence of contin- ued miserable westher, which not only caused an . excitemont among local operators, but brought out large orders from the connl?, e8- pecially from those districts whers corn and oats &ro usually raised in greatest profusion. The fact that the country is *“bull” does not always prove that the country operators are right; but we can scarcoly expect that thia should be other- ‘wise, seeing that thé West scems to be threat- -ened with another deluge. -In the dry goods market only & moderate de- 0 0f activity was witnessed, the weather be- ing unpropitious for an active trade movement. In the prints, bleached and unbleached cottons, and summer dreas goods departments, there was 8 fair aggregate of salog, but aside £rom this lit- tle was accomplished. drocerics continue flgjah Neither local nor interior dealers seem inclined to ‘anticipate wants, orders generally being re- stricted to meeting the immediato requirements ‘of their trade. Prices were not subjecied to any important change, & 2{c advance in roasting grades of coffee being tho only aslteration noted. Coffeos were docidedly firmer,—other articles in the list only fairly 80. Cheeso was dull’ss proviously quoted. Some considerablo sales Lave recently been mado for future do- Livery, but at the moment very littlo is doing. Canned goods remain quiet, with prices gonerally ~casy, corn and tomatoes be- ing the - only notsble excoptions. The retail coal trade continues inactive, and values ts, gold, on old de- e MAREET.
