For quito a number of years, and up to within a few woeks, & rospectable hardware merchant, doing business on State street, hes .had regular business calls from & man giving the name of W. A. Waterman. The Iatter claimed to bo the traveling agent of an Esstern house dealing in hardware, silverware, &c., and offered several valusble lots of goods at low prices. The mer- chant always purchased without hesitation, and it soon became & habit with him to look out for his traveling friond at cortein times, with tho ‘expectation_ of getting good bargains. For two or threo weeks the _traveler bas not g:t in an appearance. The merchant was beginning to wonder what had become of him, when, on Thursday, he received o lotter from him, dated at Grand Havon, Mich, in which he stated that he had been arrested, and implor- ed his assistance. The cause of the arrest was not given, and this made the merchant suspect that his traveling friend was not altogether hon- est. Shorwood and Avery Moore were requested to bo present. On assembling last ovening, some twonty or thirty gentlemen were found to be presont, Col. Baldwin in the Ald. Sherwood explained the systém of obtain- ing sewerage from the Common Courcil, and pointed out that the co-operation of tho citizens was needed. Ho showed -that last year Dr. Rauch had presented {0 tho Council = list of streets noeding sowerage, and had. demanded that all the sewerago fund wont to them.
