THE CHICAGO DAILY TRIBUNE: SUNDAY, MARCH 9, 1873. SELAH REEVE ET AL Another Chapter of Great Western Telegraph, Attempt to Make D. A. MONEY AND COMMERCE. MONETARY. S47UEDAY EVENING, March 8, There has been a vory marked improvement in tho aspect of affairs in the local moncy market during the last week. This is due mainly to the increase of funds realized from tho ship- mont of hogs and cattle, and to the closing up of packing operations, The packers have done an unusually profitablo basiness, and tos con- siderable oxtent thoy are realizing their profits and accumulating available funds .which have gone into banks, and are helping to keep up the prices of grain. In the open marketmoney is more abundant. First-class pepor has been ne- gotiated in largo amonnts at 10 per cont. Good paper is in demand at from 10 to 12 por cent, and loans can be offected on collaterals at 9 to 10 * nccommodation” g:ger goes at 15 to 18 per cent, and second-class lo _paper at about the samo rate. By report given below it will be seep there have been some per cent. Really good transactions in our local stocks : The supply of oxchange on New York, how- iminished congiderably within & day or two, and indicates the possibility of tho mopey ‘market workiog somowhat closer nest Sales were made between banks to-day 8650 per 31,000 discount, though there were ever, has weok. but fei ecllers at that figure. The clearings of the Chicago bsnks for tho TT:e car lond of mixed wheat and barley to which we alluded in this morning's issue, was delivered from the Galona Elevator, and not the Air Line, as stated in our notice. Itis only fair to audi allerem parlem; and while swindles, actuzl or sttempted, on the grain-shipping community ehould bo mercilogs- Iy exposed, thero i oqual reason for noting cases in which thoy tryto take unfair advaniage. A carload of whoat arrived here to-day from Tows, which weighed 67 Ibs per bu at the top, while that near the bottom only weighed 531 1bs per bu. If the shipper expected that the 'whole car-load would be inspected as belonging to the lowest grade, hie will not be disappointed. The leading produce markets were Icsa active to-day, all being rather quiet, excopt corn, whilo several were docidedly slow. Tho receipts of produce woro rather moro liberal, with finer Weather, and the shipments continus small, ex- copt in’ moats and provisions, while several rather largo operators wore anxious to urload. This produced a marked depression in some da’gmmenta, end made others sluggish. 'here was considerablo animation in the dry oods trade, particalarly in the staplo cotton and 088 _ 5O departments, and the firmness that has go long been a foaturo of the market shows no signs of abatement, The attendance of interior merchants is noticeably on tho incrense, while the volumo of business transacted through the medium of ‘‘mail orders™ is roported larger than in former sea- &ons &t a corresponding period. The markot for staple and fancy groceries presented no foa- tures differing materially from those noted during tho preced.in%d:)‘n of the week. Stocks are in good shapo, both as regards size and assortment; and, as the demsnd com- tinuos libersl, a chéerful fecling prevzils among jobbers generally. Coffecs aro in bettor supply and more quiet, but the advauco in gold serves to strongthen tho market, and holders did not seem inclined to effect sales at any con- cession. At the recent decline there is a brisk demand for sugars, and the tendency of prices s no longer in adownward direction. Toas, spic and goaps were firm. Baleratus was higher, vancing to 5@10c. P. Hop- kips. CATTLE—The week just closed has been one of more than ordinary activity in this depart~ ment of trade, aud one of fair profits_to West~ ern shippers. The nnmber of outside buyers was nofably large, Now York, Albsny, Boston, Pittsburgh, Cincinnati, Cleveland, Baffalo, and other lesa prominent points being_ ropresented, #nd, under the encourngement_afforded by the reported advence of & }{@}4c in the Eastern markets, there was quite = spirited competition for the betfer grados, under R salues ugprocinod to the extent of & %@ . The markot for low grades was also sensi— ly firmer, in sympathy, but the too liberal sup- ly of such operatad to prevent any u? ma- FeZiniadvance, The average of the woek's ceipts shows further improvement in quality, lm{ from a review of the daily sales it appears that the major portion of the transfers wore within tho range of $4.00@5.76. Sales of choice smooth, well-fatted steers, of from 1,350 to 1,450 Ibe, were reported at 36.00@06.25, while s few ex- tra'graded steers fetchod $0.50@6.75, but the offerings good enough to command these prices ‘were not numerous, and uuless foeders have something exceptionally fine they need not send it forward with the expectation of realizing over 86.25. Fair activity still characterizes the de- mand for stock cattle, and former prices are fully sustained, the market ruling firm at £3.25@3.75 for common to medium lots of from 700 to 850 1bs average, and at 84.00@4.25 for good to prime droves averaging from 900 to 1,050 s. i oung steers, of from 1,080 to 1,100 1ba average, ve been taken by feeders st £4.373{@4.50. Leocal butchers have not been ve:y liberal oper- ators, nor. need an activo demand from this source ba looked for during the season of Lent. Their wants were chiefly supplied st $3.50@4.00 for common to good fat cows, and af $£.00@4.50 for common to fairish steers. ‘While in comparison with the preceding two or three weeks, the Week under review has wit- nessed marked improvement in tho quality of tho atock offered for sale, the average ia still belu;rd’ t!.:ltd ot‘h former years a.fie » wxl'respzmding perit e opinion is daily gairin, und, That, notwithstanding the grent abusdance of corn, and it8 relative cheapmess, there is no probability of there being a surplus of fat cattlo. Tha recoipts have boen remarkably largo for tho season, and although shippers oporated. on a very liberal scale, they were unzble to prevent a stendy ac- cumalation, and prices gua’fmly worked down- ward. The declino in cLioice grades lins not been serious, tho offerings of such comprising but & small proportion of the supply, but common coarse lots are “‘off " fully 15@%0¢, a8 compared with the prices onrrent 2~ woek ago. Tho aver- sgo quality for tho week was aboat the poorest ever scon here at any eeason, thero being scarcely a drove that shippers wonld take withe out sorting. The *tops” sold at fair prices, while the culls were not wanted at any price, an several thousand remain in tho pens unsold at the cloge. To-day only a small business was done.
