Notwithstanding the continued stringency in the New York money market—which would nat- urally be expected to affect Chicago to some extent—money continues to work moderately easy in mést parts of the West. STATE GBAIN-ISGPECTION. A gentléman connected with one of our prom- nent commission houses, has just returncd {from a trip inthe West, during which hetraveled overthe esots Somhern, the}Winons & 8t. Peters, and tho Wisconsin Central Railroads, 20d up the Missiesippi River to Minnespolis. He states that ho found a feeling universal among grain buyers to the effoct that the ‘present grain inspection of this city discrimi- ‘Dates against them to an extont of an averago of 2@3c per bu, ns compared with tho Milwaukes inspsction, and that they sond all the imin they can to Milwaukes, for that reason. About ome- third of their wheat passcss in Milwaukee 28 No. 1, while none of it is inspected above No. 2 when gent to Chicago. An instance was related of ashipper whohad s lot of wheat, uniform in quality; he loaded & railroad-car, and put the rast into bags, there_not being enough left to makon car-losd. Ho sent it all to Chicago. The car-load inspected ss No. 2, and sold on that inspection at $1.21 por bu, while the bagged Jot wassold in the samo market, by sample, at $1.88 ber bu. Burely such cases 88 this are enough to make our grain-handlers cry out againat the State Inspection of grain as & delu- siop and a snare. Of couras, while such & condition of things exists, we cannot hope to receivé any grain from the extensive area of country sbove re- forred to, 50 long 38 it can bo sont elsowhere, and this much-to-be-regrotted fact i fravght with consoguences which aro of deop concorn_to the whole of our mercantilo community. The people of that section are well-to-do; mmch bettor off than the average of farming communities, and their custom is ‘worth something. They will buy their 00ds whera they sell their in, other things being nearly equal, Our sbeurd Inspection law, and its cqually absurd interprotation, is thus working so very detrimentally to_Chicago in & commercial eense, that eve citizen i8 intereated in pro- curing tho repeal of the law. 3 Ttisafact which cannot be disputed, that {bero is & widespread and rapidly growing deter- mination among Esstorn_grain-buyers to pur- 1o grain in Chicago if they can procure it ai other points beyond us. Hence the rapid growih of the throngh shipments of grain from Pooria, Joliot, Milwaukee, and other points which might be named, It is difficult to rec- ognize this fact and avoid the almost inevitable conclusion that it is in large part due to tho in- spoction of grain under Stato;control ; and, unless this incubus on our grain trade be removed, wo must expect to sce a still further decroase in the proportion of the shipments of the Northiwest that pass through Chicago. Indeed, it is shrowdly ected that the determination to perpetuate the burden upon our comnferce is stimulated by the parties in other places who are anxious to thrive at the expense of Chicago, and will loave no stone untarned to secure tho ex- jstence of discriminations which operate o largely in their favor. ¥ THE MARKETS. Tho leading produce markets were fairly aciive to-day, thougl the attention of numerous I o tho demand for delivery on the part of B “who had ot previously fillod in their March contracts, - The roceipts of produce werd Tair, but not large. Tho condition of tho grocery market under- went. mo ossential chango, Fair sctivity pro- Toled in the difforent dopartments, and the Tooling among jobbers was uniformally rm. Btocks aro now in good shapo, both as rogards sizo and assortmont, and tho wants of the in- fecior trade are being promptly met. Dry goods ontinue to move on o liboral scale. Not only was thers o fair attendanco of buyers io person, but the “order business" ‘was lso large, snd tho aggregato - distribution excoeded = tho expectations of dealors. Tard betng exported direct on through billa of lading, ot only to various Englizh ports, butalso to the eov- ool bonsuming points on the Luropean Continent. Oar stocks will probably provo smaller than gonerally snticipated,-tho drain has been 20 excessive and con- Hinons, The atatisticsns to barreled meats (mostly mess pork) are traly smazing. From the 1st of November, this season, to the pres- ent time, our receipts of pork sum up less thon 5,000 Bris, whilo for the corresponding time laes year thoy sommed up over 60,000 brls, Our shipments for the ear stm up over 150,000 bris, against sbont 50,000 brls for the corresponding timo lnst year. In other words, while Iast year our recelpts not only re- lenished thie draft on our manufacture by ehipment, ut incressed our stock some 10,000 brle. This year onr manufactare has been trenched on over 143,000 Prls, Of course, much of this may be sccounted for by the heavy stock of old mess held hero the usenl.ng- of the season, and of whichit is undorstood over 0,000 brls are included in the shipments, but most of fhat has gone into consumption or applicd s stock at New York sud other points. —The shipments of course include prime mess, extra prime, rumps, &c, but $t is dombiful i the cgate of these be 80 8 Iast yoar, The trus ‘olution of the enigma a8 to our light receipts cam bo found in the fact that the country points, with hardly a0 exception, made little if_any moss porl, d Dot only by the fact thnt meata were more adyantage- ously salable in other forms, but our knownhesvy stock of old mess acted aa a bugbear to all the Western country. This old mess must now be taken for actusl Gonsumption at s redaced price, a8t is ot availsble for speculative purposes. 1t is difficult togive any re- 1isble opinion 88 to the stock, but our best information would lead us to believe that it cannot be over 50,00 bris of new and bris of old meas. Jtis well known that the packing of mess pork here was extremely limited and confined to but few Boures, somo of our largest houses not having put up » singl barrel, Last year the manufactare of barreled pork wss returned by the packers at 152,012 bris, Dhich, with the oxcess of 10,000 brls of tho receipts over shipments, ought to have given us & stockof over 160,- 000 brls; But, 28 returned -by our packers and ware- housemen at the close of tho scason, it was only 95,162 bris mess, snd 6,618 bris il other kinds of pork. Somo idea of the extent to which the tolegraph is employed by livo-stock dealers may bo gained from the fact that the averago monthly business at the Stock Yards offico of the Western Union amounts to about siz thousand dollars. In Ma. Iast Mr. X. S, Gough was placed in chargo of af* fairs there, siuce which timo the business of the office has incressed nearly 100 per cent. This must be cxcecdingly gratifying, not only to tho gentlemanly and indefatigable Gough, ‘but to $ho company, whose faithful servant hie is. CATTLE—1n connection with the cattle market thio past week hus doveloped’ o new features worthy of xsocxnl comment. Fair activity has characterized tho demand from the opening of trade to the close, and,; with o moderate amount of stock on sale, sellers have been enabled to realizo promptly, and st relatively good pricoes. The Eastern markots have not boen in a ’ghly prosperons condition, but thomargin botweenhero and the seaboard was sufficient to_attract tho attention of shippers, and into their hands the major ’F‘fruon ‘of the week's supply found its way. The domand from local butchers was not particularly active, nor were feeders operating a8 freoly a8 during the proceding two' or three weeks, ‘but tho supply of the descriptions of stock usually scught efter by these two classes of buyers was modrate, and abont evarything was picked up 8 fast 88 received. Althoug] the quality of the cattle now coming forward is not a3 good asin former years ata ‘correspond - ing penod, steady improvement is notice- sble, the Saverags of the past week Dbeing - considersbly ~sbove that of any precceding week of the present sea- son.
