i \. SANITARY MATTERS. i Tbrtelity RBeport-—--Increase in the ' Death-Rate---Boarding-House ‘Eeepers and Small-Pox ' Patients. Ather Essay from the Sanitary Superin -tendeat’s Pen on Slaughtering and Rendering. meeting of the Board of Health was held | Yerdey afernoon. After the transaction of' Y8 dinary jusiness, Dr. Rauch submitted his Weer repor, of which the following isan abst "he mortality for the week endi: Dee 14 wos 162, an increase of Jover the returns for the week precedz, of the decedents, 83 were xalesnd 7) femeles; 30 infants nnder one Jear; .boiveen 10 and 20 yesrs; 23 between 20 8nd 'yegrs; 22 bietween 30 and £0 years, and 2 over yenrs. The most fatal cuuses during :e weiwere: ccidents, 10; consumption, 18; corsions, 2; typhoid fever, 8, pneu- zmonis, Semsll-jox, 1 s E BANI/ARY SUZERINTENDENT remarks ¢ tho alove o5 follows : The incree in o numbes of deaths over last week £a more thupodecreaso of lust weelt compared with he woele LOre the fotal being greater than for any similar pevd wihin the lzet cloven weeks, Cowpared with jast £k, tiere were 5 more deaths by accidents ; 31y cen¥; 6 dropsy; 2 by ecarlet fever; 3 by <yphoid er, a1l 7 by small-pox. Although the in~ Grease @mortuliy was decided, thers are only a fow diseascby whica there wus a hotsblo inereace, such 28 cron dropsy.and emall-pox. Amongtbe nnmerous caugesf death, inere is an increase of deaths by blood oisolg. A deith is also Teported by hydrophobis. The/o deaths by thls last-pamed diseaso within the pasé™ Weeks, 3o docior is uuable to account for; in jher réspects thers is _ mothing un- Tsy in fho couses of death, For the corre- £pding week in 1871 therewere 191 deaths, Tho T3¢ dalls temperaturo for theweek was 24 degrecs, org lower than tho preceding week, snd 4 degrees Sehan for Lhe corresponding week iz 1871, ~ The in- erte inthe number of houses reported infected by £vi-pox and varioloid i3 marked, In five wecks the ‘miber Lizs steadily increased, although the total of thweck §s ouly two mare than was the case six wecks -Of these, thers was an increase of six on the % Side, south of Twelfth strect ; threo on the South i, without other change in the other small-pox dsions of the city. For tho sume timo lnst year e were forty-six bouses reported. With an increase ohe cases, there has been an jncrease in the number ofeaths, or ope less than for the corresponding week 2871, EXALL POX. Dr. Rauch complains af tho recklessness of ddoon snd boarding-hoase keepers, who resort 4 any Bubterfuge to evade compliance with the Jws for the prevention of the epread of emall- ‘ox, lest their business should be in any way mdangered. The Dootor relates an incident in shich 3 boarding-house keoper hustled a smail~ gox patient into the Health Ofiice, where a num- r of chiliren were boing _vaccinated, ofter taking him to every hospital in tho city. The Doctor concludes that in all cases of this character (whero tho dis- ense is onmly suspected and not identified) the patient should be left in the hounee whero he was living, uatil the nature of the disease is determined by the Board, and his removal effacted witiont his coming in’_contact with any erson but those whose duty itis to sttend to . T put a stop to the practices complained of. Dr. Rauch requests the passago of & regu- lation forbidding it. The roport wes placed on fils. . The total number of ‘dead horses received at the plaiform during tho week was 91. SLATGHTERING A%D RENDERING, Dr. Reuch also presented a specisl report on the subject of_slaughtering and rendering. He commences with the stetement that the simple removal of the slaughter-honses beyond the Btack Yards only removes, but does not zbate, the nuisance. Tho stenchesarising from the varions sourcos west of the StockYarcs ond other places lsst summer caused Berious inconvenience when the wind came from_that guarter, and convinced the Doctor that Bridgeport was not responsitle for them. This was more observa- ble ast summer than during the vear preceding, wing t0 an increass of businessin slaughter- ing, which has foulod the South Dranch, into which the establishments drain. The absence of a freshet lzst spring, to carry awsy the Alth, oontributed to this condition of affairs. Unless rigid mezsures were_taken this would become more offexsive than Healy Slough in its palmiest * dsys. He bad pointed out to the Stock Yards 2uthorities and the sleughter-honze men the necesaity for baving more artesian wells, and Died Do doubt that, by July 1, the drainage would Do equel to = stream 20 inches in dinmeter. The Doctor insisted that tank water or tank 2oup must be uillized at any cost, and Dot thrown into the river. If this is not done u ditch must be dug at great expense from tie head of the South Branchto the cenal, to obtein & current, and puriy it in this wey. The abjection to this is the effect it will have upon the river. Dr. Rauch prophesies a froshet next Epring, but tlis contingency for cleaning tho river 15 mot to be depended upon. Another canse of the impurity of the Tiver was the low- ness of thelake for a year, which wonld con- tinue, did wo not kave gome rsin or snow. Ho therefore contends that all esteblishments from which lignid flows contaiming organic maiter shonld havo their own aresian well, and two when one is net sufficient. The utmost surveil- lance i necessary to prevest the Stock Yards from being more detrimental t0 health then oy~ Dr. Rauch recom- Bridgeport was. cmnr ds %.hg extension - of tho Board’s jurisdiction _ over tae whole county. o Town of Lakie was pouzing te filthy sowago into this city, and yot refuced to allow the burial of tanl offs] Within its precincts,*hough needing it 25 a fertilizer. The same was true of Cicero. _ The Bonrd could ot establish quaran- tine undor present circumsjances, should chol- era_sppear, escept by pamission. Cholera, £mall-pos, and offensive obrs were no_Tespect- e of aity limite, hence the necessity for such an extension of authority. The Doctor finds in the imperfect mortality Tegist-ation an argu- ment for including the cemeferies in the juris- diction of the Board. i The roport wos réierred tothe Sanitary Com- mittes, together with the Jrevicus roports on the subject. The Board adjourned. VACCINATIN. The following ordinance vas passed: Szomios 7. That the Sanitary Superintendent, Sani- fary m;;nmr?d d Hezlth m{xrfrm be nntht(;rized, and it eh=li be teir dify, to Taceinate and revaccinate 1l persons in Biouses infected with small-pos, or to e % i8 promptly done by others. 2, Any person or persons in any house infected withsmall-pox rufueing to be vaccitited or Tevacci- pated shall, upon conviction, be subject toa fine of notless than $10 nor more than $100, A NUISANCE. e The Sanitary Superintendont was_instructed ta tzke the proper sieps to secure the indiet- ment of Leach & Voodner, proprictors of a dictillery on the South Branch, for meintaining 2 nuisance—opening their eluices and allowing the offel from their eziablichment fo run into & fork of the South Branch, - -k M EEALTH OFFICER reported the City Scavenger was doing =1l ke could, hnving eighteen teams employed to Te- mpve the accumulstions of garbage &nd_ashes from the streets snd allogs, ~ Notices had _been eerved on soveral packers at the Stock Yards for discharging the offal from their places into the Sowers® no. washings wers highly mmpreg nsted with orgenic matter, aud anuisance would Le crested in the Stock Yard slip. The Board then adjourned. MUSICAL. CHURCH BENLF¥IT CONCERTS. & Tho ebsence of any musical sttractions of the orofessional order, has given the home musi- 3iens & clear ficld for concerts, and they are im- proving it with a gusto. This weck the churches sro coming in for benefits, On Sunday evening the choir of St. Mary’s Church, 3fre. McGuire (sopranc), Miss Farrell (alto), Mr. Schulize (tenox), and Mr. Bowen (basso), under the direction of Mr. Frank G. Mr. Root may - congratulate himself upon having ofganized s very succetsful concert, We have not space fo emer into details,. and can only indicate those features which wers of more than ordinary interést, and these wers 3r. Ledochowski's exccllext performance of Tiszt's transcription of the Schiller Mrch, so Btrongly suggestive of the dajs of Balatka; Mr. Bowen's humorous 'and - rollicking _'ting- ing of the familiar old ‘song Simon, {ho Cellarer;” Miss Whiie's ~singing of Hullah's dramatio ballad “The Storm;” Miss Roberts’ superb playing of Wabor's * Concort- Btueck; and Miss Haskell's snging of one of the airé from Schumann’s * Woman's Life and Love”—a class of mongs whick Miss Haskell always sings woll. A novel fealuro of tho pro- grammo was tho performanco,of Romberg’s * Children’s Sympkony ” in five hiovements, is written in regular symphojic form, but the trestment is; very simple, tho themos thin, and the -whole very monotonous. The' _interesting festures of it aro the selection of instruments, whith embraces a ano, two violins, double buss, trampet, trom- one, tamborine, drum, whistle, el imifations of the cuckoo and nightingalo, and tho fact that most of the instruments were playediy children, who_ filled their parts remerkably well. As a whole, the concert” may be sob doWA 08 & very ploasait one, and ubovo the averagoja poiat of Inerii =y MARKETS BY TELEGRAPH.
