The local money market continues quiet, but stringent. Deposits, however, areincreasing slow- 1y, 2ndthe general tendency of affairs is towardan easier condition. But in some quarters thers is evidently alack ofsufiicient capital tomeet obliga* tions. In the open market thereis still considera- blo good peper offered ab13¢ per cent per month, < though the smount is less than was offered a *month ago. Carrency is moving into the country * freely in payment for hogs, and the demand for “currency has an effect to depress the price of “New York exchange, which was sold between banks to-day at par. BANE STOCEHOLDERS. TIn connection with some remarks made in this .column this morning in regard to the publica~ tion of lists of their stockholders by National Banlks, our attention has been directed to Section .40 of the National Currency act, which provides that every bank sball “Leep at all times & full .and correct list of the names and residences of g1l shareholders in the aseociation, and the num- ber of shares held by cach, in the_ office where its business is transacted ; .and such list ghall be subject to the inspection of all shareholders and creditors of the aesociation.” We are perfectly aware that this provision of the law gives every .denositor tho legal right fo - Bee who Bre” the stockholders of the bank whers . his money is_ deposil and within the past year or-two have several times -referred to this right of' stockholders. But - practically this provision of the law on behalf -of depositors is inoperative. A depositor never likes to have any discussion sbout legal rights with his banker. If he has sufficient doubts | mbout the soundness of a bank to feel that he | “would like to know who is responsible as stock- * holders to him as o depositor, he docs not in- quiro who are the stockholders, but quietly Graws his money out and puts it in some other bank in the management of which he has confi- dance, withont inquiring who are the stockhold- ers, Any movement, theroforo, to give the pub- Lic information 23 to who are the stockholders of the benks, muet come from the banks them- sl CITY RAILYWAT STOCKS. Ameng local szecurities there are none which are_popularly regarded as more valusble or as Dpaying moroe certein dividends than our horse- Teilway etocks. This is, in fact, trae, aslong as the roads nre judiciously managed, but when 1ney adopt such round-abont illegal tmethods of watering stocks as that recently adopted by the ‘Weet Divisica Railway Com&)uny in the issue of $250,000 cortificates of indebfedness, it must aoct the value of the stock. As we understand, the Company issue this $250,000 of certificates -on which they egree to pay 10 per cent interest, +and soll them to the stockholders at 40 per cent of their face. The Company thus realizes §100,009 in cash, but to do it creates a debt of $250,000, on which the anmusl interest 45 '925000; in short, it pays to stockholders' who own theso certifi- & goeranteed dividend of 25 per «cont per anmum on £100,000. The stock and ‘indobtedness of the West Division Railway Com- pany now stands: Stock, $1,250,000; debt:in cortificates, $250,000 ; flodting debt, probably, %$100,000; total, -S1,600,000, The earnings of itke Company fuctuato largely. From the mid- -dle of September to the middle ‘of October the esmings aro udderatood to have been sbout £62,000. Boon after that the horse disease -Geprived it of all rovenue for nearly s month, The Tresent gross earnings are at the Tate of :zbont 40,000 per month, from which is to be doductod, Bay, 60 per ceat for operating ex- ponses, 1éaving net earnings of probably $16,000 :per month, or at the rate of, eay, 12 per cent per ‘znpum on the total amount of capital stock .and indebtedness, but for the las} two months . the total net earnings have probably not exceed- .ed the =average rate of 7 per cent per annum. ~The stock of the Cbiuigo City Railway Company is $1,250,000. Its gross earnings up to the middle of October were -about 265,000 per month, and, during the time .hat the West Side Cm:sgmy earned nothin; zzcount of the horse disease, the South Side Company earned $24,000, and the present earn- iage are_probubly ab the rateof £45,000 per wonth. Deducting, g8y, 60 per cent for operat- - expenses, this would leave $18,000 permonth or at the rate of 18 per cent per annum. BANES RESPONSIBLE AS CONBIGNEES. In view of s recent judicial decision, the par- diculars of which were given in this column of Tag TrizoNe last week, a number of the New * Tork banks aro sending to their correspondent benlks the following notice : B NEW Yonx, Dec, 10, 1572, A3 important declslon has recently boen made by it Tnited States District Court, against 5 Boston k, for having surrendered a bill 1ading, attached to & time draft, npon acceptance of the draft, e opinidn erpresséd was, in substance, 88 follows : i That ol Lils g sitathed to arafis should be ssurrendered only upon payment of the draft.” - T coneoquence of this Gecision, auy doatt sent to #5is bank for callection, accompanied by bill lading or 4z=nsportation receipts, must have expressed instruc- 4ions writter upon its fuce, with signature, whother or Zot it be surrendered upon cceptance, Inthe ‘ehsence of instructions, all such documents will be 5eld uatil psyment of the drafts, and, upon refusal of drsvsesto aoceply they must,’of hecessity, be pro- tesie A SEW COUNTERFEIT. There was received on Friday last at the “Treasury of the United States s note purporting to ba a United States Iey tender note of the denomination of £500. 1t is composed of parts of Qifferent gennine notes of various denomina- tions. The centre is & part of a one hundred, withthe “one” taken out in the center and npper border and s five neatly inserted. The left hand lower end contains the portrait of Andrew Jzckeon, taken from a five dollar note; the right hand lower end ® vignette from- a ten. The scroll work containing the figures ‘500" has been taken from s National Bank note; the back of the note is from a ten doller United States note, the ‘““ten” having been cut out and replaced by the “ovals” from the back of = five. Although this note is not calculated to_deceive bankers £nd brokers, it would be roadily taken by those who are nob sccustomed to bandling much money, 8s the engraving is all gennine. In its ‘eneral sppearsnca it has no resemblance to the note of the denomination of which it purports to £s & genuine issue. The receipts of grain continue liberal; but ex- cept in corn the shipments compare favorably with those of & year ago, showing 5 very fair de- mand from Eastern points. There is tho seme demand for corn, but not made on Chicago.
