Neny persons have séen Lady Becher within ! the lost tweniy or even ears, to whora her famo as sn artist was always but &n old tradition. Her dramatic career was one % tho skorfest 23 well as the_brightest lnown to the annals of our stage. Five veara she stood befora the footlights of an Englizh theatre, and ced away into private life. Fifty-threo ‘are gone since Mies O'Neill made her lost On the of Getober, 1814, ehe presented herself for tie frst time, in Covent Garden, as Juliet; in Decomber, 1519, she left the stage, without any formal lesve-tating o fourich of trumpets, and pever was seen upon the boards egain. It is donbtful whetfier the genius of ac- tre=s or actor will 5001 again awaken to the same dezrce the public interest and attention, the criticism of the highest minds, the study of the gravest thinkers, 28 it aid when Mies O'Neill ‘was dividing the attention of London with Ed- mmund Eean. Showy scenery and glittering spec- tecle now attract the mero sighiseers, and the preity, vivacious, light comedy, in which to be Toturel and sparlding is to be all, delights suffi- ciently the more intelligent of the public. For tha time, at least, the femper of mind is gone wkich sent London wild with emotion and ad- t miration over Beiidera and Juliel; and we greatly doubt whether & woman of even equal aud gifts could by eny possibility make sack o mark on public attention now as Miss O'Neill did during the ehort primeof her artistic triumphs. 5 “T'v seen the Siddons, sir, and the O'Nale,” gasa the brave Captein Cosfigenin “Penden- pia;” “they were great; but what were they compared to Miss Yotheringey?” “Yon are ss pattetic as Miss O'Neill,” says Mejor Perd:nais, eyirg the most andacious compiiment he can Jhikof to the same Miss Fotheringay. AL this iss O'Nell eacaped. Sholeftthostoge in the morping freshness of her beauty and her. talents. One of tho mosb pathetic and indeed Lumiliating pacsages in ihe career of Mrs. Bid- dons is 1l time when she used to c?mplnm of being forgotien because of Mies O'Neill; and when reading the praises of the younger wom- an'e . exquisite _ pathos ghe ‘would ask auernlously, “ Do people think I mever drow o tear?” ~Mrs. Siddons was tempted to reappesr on tlie staga for the %)mfl- Ppurpose of cclipsing Mies O'Netll, and was bit- terly aggrieved when some ill-natured carica- tures appeared, contrasting the youth and sym- metry of_the younger artist with the overgrown and ponderous form wherein yeers had smoth- ered the once incomparable Lady Macbeth. It is not 80 long ago since Lady Becher was seen in tho box of on English theatro, Watching With cordial delight and spproval the perform- ance of an actress whom she could look at, hep- pily for hereelf, with no feeling of rivalry—in whoso praise she could join without supposing that the applause given to another waa s neglect of herself. 1y admonished b; voice that she ; light. “Would she It was, we believe, in certain famous private- theatricals of Killennny—still treasured in the memory, or, ab least, in thoe traditions of old- fashioned Irish society—that Miss O'Neill made the acquaintance of the accomplished gentleman who afterwards became her husband.” For the greater part of her married and widowed life she remained quietly on her husband’s estete, in the south of Ireland. Her celebrity always lingered around her. While generation aftor generation of actors came on &nd_passed away, while this style of acting succeeded that, end both were forgotten for some novelty—her fame hardly faded. There was, indeed, a sort of forestalled immortality sbout it, so entirely withdrawvn was the career of the still living artist from the rivalry, or even the per- sonal recollection of the present race of actors. Lady Becher never can be ranked highest among, our tragic aetresses while the fame of rs. Siddons endnres; and, like Mrs. Siddons, Ehe appears to have been unable to enter with success the field of eparkling comedy. DBut in tragedy she had only Mrs. Siddons for & superior among English actresses, and in bher OVD P&r- ticular patl she probably has had no cqual. Her stainless fame a8 a woman fittingly accompanied her pure renown a8 an artist; and her noble character will long keep her memory honored in many circles and many homes where the brief triumphs of the stage would perhaps be held of but little account.
