If the proper methods of washing and polishing are used, however, the finish will retain its original lustre for a considerable time, probably 18 months or two years, before it begins to get dull. During the first month or so a car is driven, the finish is “green” and great must be taken to see that nothing is done that. wil: spoil it, The surface may look hard, but as a matter of fact itis still a trifle soft and easily marred. It takes some time out in’the open air to thoroughly harden the 4 _ Cold water should be used copiously on the body twice or three times a week during the first month: the car is used, for this helps to harden the finish quickly. You should have a large sponge and two chamois leathers, one for the body and another for such parts as wheels, front axle, etc. First select a spot where the’car will be out of the direct rays of the sun, so that when you have hosed over the body, wheels, etc., the water will not dry off too quickly, for this will leave streaks, body, the wheels, front axle, under mudguards, etc., should be hosed over so that all the mud is softened. For this parpose the nozzle may be left on the end of the hose, as it generally requires a certain amount of pressure to remove the mud and dirt that accumulates on the chassis parts. ' saad ON SPONGE = aq RUB “IN the yam DIRECTION - - A spoke brush is a great con- venience when cleaning the wheels. You can buy these brushes so arranged that the hose can be attached to them and this allows the water to flow between the bristles all the time you are using the brush. | This brush is also very helpful in removing ‘mud and grit from the front axle, springs, etc. es ’ Do not on any account allow the water to come dut of the hose with any pressure behind it when hosing the body finish, for this simply drives the dirt and grit in. Always remove the nézzle and just allow sufficient pressure to allow the water to fall out of the end of the hose.~ Before starting to use the spronge wet the whole of the body by hosing gently. This softens up any dried dirt. Hold the hose in one hand and allow the water to play on the sponge which should be gentlytpassed up and down in straight lines. Do not use a circular motion. .Any mud which has dried-on. should: be soaked rather than rubbed off. It'is important that every trace of dirt and grit be removed before you start to dry off with the chamois. If there are any nickel or brass parts that require polishing, be careful to keep the polish off the enamel, for most polishes contain-a certain amount of cither benzine or ammonia and these liquids are deadly enemies to either enamel! or varnish. It is often advised that one of the many body polishes or waxes be used on the body right from the first. The argument is that these protect the surface. Personally I do not think any kind of polish is necessary on the body before the car is at least six months ol. After this period, however, a good polish can be used and’ will help to pre- serve the finish. A number of cars are now being finished with a new process which will keep its glossy finish for a considerable time and cannot be inj y extent by oil, gasoline, acids, etc., and cannot be easily. It is only a question of time ‘and all automo- biles will be finished in such a way that they will retain their original lustre and finish for an indefinite time, but until that time arrives, it will pay to give the finish of your car such attention as will help it retain its lustre bright and fresh.
