If the valves are improperly adjusged and are not seating properly the engine will pull badly, and you will get only a small mileage from your gasoline, When they are in very bad condition the engine will misfire, ‘overheat and become very noisy A short explanation of the work done by the valves will help you to understand why valves. require certain adjustment and care, When you lift up the hood over VALVE OPEN cis Sa \| the engine, the first thing you notice SS a isa large oblong cast iron casting. ae This is- called the cylinder block. Inside the cylinder block a nymber of holes are bored—the cylinders. It is necessary before power can be ptoduced to introduce a. quantity of gasoline mixture into the cyl- inders, then explode it. After the explosion takes place, the burnt gases must be removed from the cylinder, It can easily be seen, therefore, that each cylinder. must have two openings, one to admit the fresh pregune mixture, and the other to allow the burnt gases from r the explosion to escape, When sufficient gasoline mixture has been admitted to the cylinder, the opening through which it enters must be closed, and this is done by means, of a valve—in this case the Intake Valve. . After the explo- sion takes place, the opening through which the burnt or ex- hausted gases escape must be uncovered, so another valve is opened —this time the Exhaust Valve. The illustration shows the shape of the valves and valye openings. The valve is shaped at the top like a mushroom and has = long stem to the end’of which is attached a spring. Just below the bottom of the valve stem is a small steel rod called the Tappet, and below the tappet is the Cam which is a small wheel with hump on one side. The cam is revolved by a shaft called the cam shaft and at the cor- rect ‘time the hump. on the cam pushes up the tappet which then pastes up the valve and uncovers the aptning in the cylinder head. he spring onthe valve stem closes the valve. During the time the explosion is taking place both valves aré closed so that the full force of it is concentrated‘on top of the’ piston. _ The valves must make perfectly tight joints when closed, Bat they must open as far as possible when they are supposed to be open. The illustration shows the various de- fects that occur in valves, All of these can be prevented by proper care and attention at the right time. It is most important that the valves and valve seats are not pitted badly. After some thousands of miles of running, the heat from the millions of explosions which have taken place’ burns the valves and makes it necessary to grind them in, Full instructions for this operation were given a few weeks ago. The clearance between the top of the tappet andthe bottom of the valve stem should be checked about ‘every 1,000 or 1,500 miles. Improperly adjusted valve ‘clear- ance is responsible for at least 50 per cent of all. valve troubles. If the ‘clearance is adjusted so that T when the engine is heated up the valves are partly, open, the hot exhaust gases soon burn and pit both Valves and valve séats attd perhaps warp the valve stems as well. lf, too much clearance is given the engine will be very noisy and will fail to develop its maximum power. It is'always best for the average owner to have ther valve fappets adjusted by a competent mechanic. EE ELLE RE ESE ES ER EEN SEL Sa GASOLINE.
