MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 15, 1924. BRINGING UP FATHER BAY SCOUTS ~STAGE DANE ‘ {Continued from Pago One.) .. shaped entrance of poultry wire into which the rabbits are to be driven and then dispatched with clubs. ‘The rabbits are to be donated to the Salvation Army and hospitals as at this time of the year they are in excellent condition and there are thousands of young ones that are IN- BY GOLLY -1 fat and in prime condition for the]” table. Each participant. will also have what he wishes for his own use. The dry farmers were represented by Mrs. Pfeiffer and the area for the drive is located west of the Englewood store on the Salt Creek highway, about five miles out of the city.) ‘The trucks and cars that will carry the scouts and their friends will edch have a definite point on the circle to make and directions for each, load will be given at the bading point here. Fach scout and others who take part are asked to furnish themselves with a stout stick about three feet long. A light. baseball bat would do very well or anything from & broomstick to a shinny club will do. A piece of white cloth tied on the end like a flag will assist in the early part of the drive in scaring the rabbits ahead of the drivers. Commissioner Taylor and other scout officials will make inspections of the ground during the next few days and also of the roads that are available to reach the outer circle. The drive will be held Saturday about noon and it is expected that the work will be finished by 5 o'clock in the evening. The matter of securing poultry netting is somewhat troublesome. ‘The scout officials would be pleased to, have any donations of this ma- terlal from anyone who happens to have some of this wire in rolls that they are not using. Call up scout headquarters No, 875W or Commis- sioner Taylor at 1191W and a car will be sent for the wire. Tho corral must be quite large as in the first inspection of the ground it was seen that there were many thou- sands of rabbits and the first corral was considered much too small for the holding of the rabbits. Four scouts with large flags will be stationed at each point of the compass inside the drive circle, these scouts will be the liasion points. which will guide’ the drive. When the scout faces towards any portion of the line and waves his flag in a cixcle, that portion of the line he is facing is going too fast and that portion of the line should slow up; when the flag is waved straight up. and down in front of the scout, then the part of the line he is facing should advance faster. When the flag is iowered on the ground.in front of the scout, the portion of the drive in front of the scout should halt and when the scout carries the flag straight and starts ching ‘towards the center, the line will also start. Commissioner Taylor has ordered oud old Troop Fotr, one of the old- est troops of tlie Casper scouts and one that has rendered great service in civic and other work in’ Casper in the past. This is the first time ‘Troop Four has been ordered out as a whole since Mayor Walter Black- more, as chief of the city, held a review of the troop and accepted it as a part of the city’s non-paid force, for use in times of need. Troop Four has always since been eady to respond at any time to the eeds of the people of Casper and only a few nights ago, Commis- sioner Taylor, who was its former scoutmaster, responded to a call to- gether with several members of the old troop, on a search for a lost boy. The call came in about 10 o'élock and within 10 minutes the commissioner and his patrol were on the job. Many of the older mem- bers of Troop Four ar now young men but they consider themselv still. members of the troop as in fact they are, and they hold them- selves ready to be called any time by their scoutmaster. The corral will be built in a circle Wis jong wings extending out at the only opening and when the drive reaches the corral the numbers will be such that ‘a solid circle of scouts will enclose fhe corral. As there are some coyotes in the area of the drive, orders will be issued to let these animals as Well as any badgers, through the Ines without any effort to stop them. It is further expected that follow- ing this drive that the scouts will be called upon to clear the rabbits from many other areas, but this will depend upon the distance from Casper and the means of transpor- tation. While the object of the Boy Scout movement is to work for the good of the community and to make better men for the coming genera- tion, there is a limit to what efforts the scouts can put forth.
