SUNDAY, JUNE 8, 1924. Cm | s— tS Noises in Universal Joints Usually the Result of Lack of Lubrication ‘The other day an owner brought his car into the service staticn and complained bitterly about a clatter- ing jolt his car had developed when the clutch was let in, and’ noisy uneven running at low speeds. I got into the car and drove‘a few yards then asked the owner, “How jong is it since ,you greased the Universal joints?” He turned to me, WUniversal joints, “what are they.” - is is not an unusual answer to X the this question for thousands of own- ers never know there is such a thing as a universal joint on thelr car until it is brought to their at- tention in the manner described above. This ignorance, however, will cost you money in repair bills. If these joints are lubricated about every 500 or 600 miles they will not re- quire touched@until the engine re- quires overhauling. Neglect them and before you have driven 5,000 miles they may have to be replaced. Few owners of an automobile be- lieve it, but it is a fact that if you attend to the lubrication of the var- fous moving parts at regular inter- vals; they could easily reduce their repair bills from 50 to 60 per cent. It is neglect to give a car regular attention that provides most of the work for the repair, shops. Few owners enjoy getting on thelr backs and crawling under the car, and. that is what is generally neces- sary when you wish to attend to the universal joints. Most owners lub- ricate alt parts that are easily acces sible, but where parts are. difficull or awkward to get at, they are tempted to say—I think I will do that tomorrow, and as you know, tomorrow never comes. Now where are the universal joints? ‘There: are generally two of them, one at elther end of the shaft which connects the gear box to the back axle. They are of two types. the metal’ type and the “fabric or leather type. With the fabric type there is no noise possible, but this CARE OF UNIVERSAL JOINTS LUBRICATE METAL LMIVERSAL JOINTS SVERY 500 MILES joint requires careful watching to see that the bolts holding the fabric rings to the shaft are kept tight If these become loose, trouble quick. ly develops and the fabric rings have to be replaced. D If you notice a distinct jar, jolt or click, or as if a connegtion were loose every time you let in © the clutch, or if when you are driving slowly the car runs with a jerky motion, yet the engine is firing reg- ularly, you can be almost certain you have a worn universal joint. To find out if this Is so, move gear lever to first speed, jack up one of the rear wheels and move it to and fro. If the joints are worn badly you will hear a click from them every time you move the wheel. Of course, there is always a certain hmount of play between the teeth in crown wheel and dtive shaft pinion, but this will not allow the wheel to move more than 2 inches either way. If the movement is more than this, either the universals are worn or there is too much play between crown wheel and pinion. The play between these two gears can be taken up by an adjustment Provided for this purpose, but the adjusting should always=be done by @ good mechanic. If the gears are meshed too deep,_a loud hum will come from the back side, while if ‘© not meshed deeply enough ill be a lot of backlash and If you drive your car with worn uniyersals, it puts a severe strain on every part of the transmission Dodge Battery Guaranteed One Year $17.00 W. The way to avoid all trouble of this kind, is to take your grease gun about every 500 miles and crawl underneath the chassis and force some light cup grease into each unl- versal joint, at the same time test- ing the bolts holding the points to the shaft to see that they are tight. If you do this, you will find that your car will run smoother and bet- ter and that replacements will rare- ly be necessary until the car has been driven 20,000 miles or over.
