Englishman Mr. Apple- john finds love, adventure, and ro- mance at his very doorstep in the photoplay ‘Strangers of the Night,’’ thé screen version of “Captain Ap- plejack" which opened yesterday at the Rialto. Matt Moore plays the role of this Englishman and does it very effectively. Enid Bennett has the part of his ward who finds a rival in one of the strangers of the night, the attractive Barbara La Marr. : Mr. Applejohn and the rest of the family of Applejohns are people of regular habits until one day the thirst for the unusual awakens in the consciousness of the man. He becomes’a blood drinking pirate and captain of pirates and has some rare Su times quelling a mutiny and cut- ting the cards for life and death and for the love of a woman. The fact that all this adventure takes place in the space of 10 minutes and in the land of make-believe does not in the least diminish the thrill which comes from the real danger of the strang- ers who seek a treasure buried with- in the house of Applejohn seven cen- turles ago by the pirate Captain Applejack. © Mr. “Applejohn has his chance to be a hero after all. Robert McKim ts the villain of the play. As an alleged Russian Bolshevist, a burglar, and a mutl- neer he does well. TEN STAR GAST SEEN IN AMERIGA PICTURE One of the most remarkable casts, in. point of ability and numbers, which has ever appeared in a motion picture Is closing at the America theater today. Generally the cast of a _picture- play consists of six to ten principles, but in “The Woman on the Jury” there are eighteen players whose ngnes are familiar to all patrons of tion picture theaters. This huge cast of brilliant actors and actresses is but one of the many reasons why “The Woman on the Jury” has been hailed as one of the season's mas- terpleces, Sylvia Breamer, who is fast as- cending the-ladder to stardom, is featured in the production, the re- mainder of the players in it including such popular favorites as Henry B. Walthall, Lew Cody, Frank Mayo, Bessie Love, Mary Carr, Hobart Bosworth, Myrtle Stedman, Roy Stewart, Ford Sterling, Jean Her- sholt, Arthur Lubin, Stanton Heck, Fred Warren, Arthur 8. Hull, Kew- ple King, J. Edward Davis and Leo White. > ___ MIX EXCELS IN ROLE OF TROUBLE SHOOTER Picture fans thought they had seen Tom Mix in about every role possible to give him, but he comes out in a new one in “The Trouble Shooter,” his latest William Fox re- lease, from the pen of Frederick and Fanny Hatton, which plays at the America theater four days start- ing Friday, Mix plays. the part of a western “trouble shooter” for a big power company which strings wires through the wild mountain country to lnk civilization, He has the support of one of the finest casts ever assembled for him. Kathleen Key has the leading fem- inine role. Natural scenery, effective plot, a romantic story and clever acting, combine to present the versatile western star to the best advantage. He dares a gallop over a trestle on Tony, his famous horse, with a roar- ing locomotive coming along behind. He rides through a mountain storm with Tony wearing “horse snow- shoes." And he fights and shoots his way through and over all sorts of obstacles, It's a corking good picture and every picture fan will appreolate it. HAS NO VILLAIN OF VAMPIRE “Just a Wife,” whfch opened at the Iris theater yesterday, proved @ photoplay without a villain . or villainess. The plot is based upon the Eternal Triangle, with two wo- men using all their wiles to win the love of the man they both desire‘and yet both fight so fairly and there is ‘so much justification for every act of each of them that neither of the contestants ever loses the sym- ‘pathy of the audience, It might also be said that the husband, over whom all the fuss Is made, is a regular he man and never sinks in the estimation of the audience. All the situations seem perfectly logical —situations whigh could concelv- ably develop in any community, and as a consequence, there {s no need of deep-dyed villany. This one fea- ture of “Just a Wife” is enough to make the photoplay appeal to that great and growing class of picture patrons who find themselves fed up on cheap sensationalism. Dou- glas MacLean will be seen on the picture program in “Going Up.” “The Girl in Pink” is a fast mov- ing vehicle of fun. The plot centers around one of the principal! members of the company and considerable romance is injected into the produc- tion while comedy is not lost sight of. The Budding Beauties chorus will have some new songs and dances and other members of the troupe will also step out in novel numbers. “Goinr Un", revenls the trials of an airman who {s really no airman at ai Macican finds hm. by all sorts of hero worshippers who want to see him fly and all because-he has written a best. seller on experiences in the upper atmosphere while as a matter of fact he has never been off the ground. —<——S HARRY CAREY COMING TO WYOMING FRIDAY Starting tomorrow the Wyoming theater will present “The Lightning Rider with that much approved western hero Harry Carey in a thrill. ing role which gives him an op. portunity to show his versatility. It is a seven-reel picture and by many critics is considered the greatest pic ture which ey has ever made. Tonight the Wyoming is present ing the musical comedy “A Man That Looks Like Me.” —— CAREY'S OWN RANCH IN WYOMING FILM FEATURE The picturesque outdoor scenes in “The Lightning Rider,” Hunt Strom- berg’s second production starring. Harry Carey, will have a double in: terest for fans who are “in the know." For no only are they un- rivalled in pictorial beauty, but they were filmed at the ranch of the star near Saugus, California. Those who have heard of the Harry Carey Rancho and who know his fondness for its spreading acres will be intrigued at seeing him take on a fictional characterization in the realism of this setting. In fact, “The Lighning Rider,” tn addition to being the most romantic and adventurous Carey vehicle to date will be a personally conducted tour which will need no ballyhoo to attract crowds eager for insight into the personal lives of motion picture stars. This 1s probably the first time that a star's home has been used as a setting for his pieture. “The Lightn- ing Rider’ comes to the Wyoming theater tomorrow.
