FRIDAY, APRIL 18, 1924. ‘EXAGGERATED EGO" OF THAW {5 ‘TILL MANIFESTED IN ATTITUDE (Continued From Page One) of some of the other pathological conditions, An exalted opinion of ones self always leads to a dignity of bearing, many times entirely out of proportion to what the o calls for. ‘Therefore it is difficult for a jury which sees Thaw on parade ag it were, to picture him as chasing rab- bits and flaying them with sticks; beating them almost into insenst- bility and then cuddling them to his breast and asking them what they are saying: Yet to those who fol- lowed the testimony of the murder trials the rabbits have brought the most damning testimony against the abnormal millionaire whose esca- pades have rung around the entire eivilized world. The incident of the rabbits recalls the beating of young girls to make them writhe and weep and then to carress. There were plenty of such stories at the murder trials. Some of the beatings took place in an old Buropean castle where Harry Thaw imagined himself the king. Then, too, there was the story of the girl placed by Thaw in a tub of almost boiling water and held there until she cried out in agony and was al- most as pink as a boiled lobster, ‘That was Thaw’s perverted ideas of affection toward human beings. In the asylum he devoted these affec- tions to the pet rabbits. Once free orns _. Pain Stops Instantly Here's instant relief from that burn- ing corn! Blue-jay will stop the'pain instantly. Evelyn Thaw knows this better than any other person and she is fighting to keep ‘Thaw co: Even the alfenists who are swear- ing with might and main that, des- pite the rabbits, despite the history of his life, despite the “lingering” brain clot, Harry Thaw 1s safe and sane today, although they ‘cannot forecast what a man may do six months from now, In the days when everybody wanted him to be insane, even his own family, it used to be sald of Harry Thaw that he had a “crazy look” in his eyes. That Is what the lay witnesses said. The experts had bigger and more intricate phases of explanation, as befitted the enormous fees they were charg- ing Harry Thaw’s mother. The same look is there today. The eyes protrude with the same fixed stare, the same startled looks of bewilderment. Admittedly Thaw is in a difficult predicament. His every move is being studied and jotted down by the alienists who will attempt to prove that he 1s still insane. Even the sanest, most com- posed of men, under such scrutiny ¢ay after day, hour after hour, might easily wince and betray some worrted emotion. But not so with ‘Thaw. He has the assurance of ego. There is no greater in all the world. The present Thaw proceeding is a queer jumble. Thaw is fighting for his release and for his right to spend the millions which have ao- cumulated to his fortune since he was confined and kept away from the big white lights. In this fight he has enlisted once more the ever ready ald of his devoted old mother who wants his companionship in these last years of her life, The mother is very old. Thaw is but fifty. His mother has been pic- tured as his “only friend. Soon she will be gone. Who will be- friend then? z Thaw is being most vigorously, and most effectively opposed by the trustees of his estate. They do not agree with his mother and they are combatting the notion that he is sane No matter how vital Evelyn Nesbit may feel her tn- terest in the matter, her interven For reasons of state, King Victor Emmanuel want Princess Mafalda, second daughter of the . Thus Thaw's move for froedom is being fought by his best friends, as well the ex-wife who was discarded when the électric chair no longer cast its menacing shadow across his path. The peculiar conditions of the present trial recall the odd rule of evidence which governed the mur- der trials. District Attorney Jerome claimed that he could shatter almost every word of Evelyn's strange story of her ruin and her subsequent life with Thaw. But the court held that if she told that story to Thaw and thereby inflamed his brain, it made no difference whether the tale was true or Not. The only question was did she tell the tale to Thaw? She said she did and there was no way. to disprove it. Mr. Jerome far from “persecuting”’ Harry Thaw, has always believed him tn- sane. He has felt he wag “crim!- nally insane’ however, and should be committed for life. Apparently in the lexicon of untold wealth, tho, there is no such word as life. Habeas corpus {s more popular. Thaw having been adjourned until Monday, lawyers on both sides of the case are devoting their time to strengthening their positions for the final moves in the proceedings. Thaw, who was on the witness stand yesterday for a brief period, was back in the Pennsylvania hos: pital for mental and nervous dis. eases in West Philadelphia today, but may ask permiasion to visit his mother, who is staying at a hotel. Mrs. Thaw, who is 82 years old, is standing the strain of the trial very well members of her party said. Whether she will take the stand in behalf of her son, will, it was said depend upon further developments. Likewise, no definite decision has been made as to whether Wvelyn Nes- bit, divorced wife of Thaw will take the stand. Sho is prepared to tes- tify against her former husband in bebalf of her son, Russell William Thaw, who, she claims, has an an- ticipatory interest in Thaw's estate. Five alienists have testified that Thaw is sane and not dangerous, and four have given thelr opinion that he is still insane and would be ®& menace if released, The side op- posed to Thaw’s release has two allenists to call. aaa > Sa Sa THREE LARGE HOVIE MAKERS ARE MERGED NEW YORK, April 18.—Metro Pic- tures, Goldwyn Pictures and the Louls B.
