SUNDAY, MARCH 2, 1924 AIGE-JEWETT PLANT IN HIGH Record Is Broken in First Month of Present Year. DETROIT, Mich., March 1.—The first sensational Increase in produc: tion to be announced by any of the automobile companies during 1924 was that of the Paige-Detroit Motor ir company which built more yPsiges and Jewetts in January than YY Previous month in its history, according to an announcement last week by Harry M. Jewett, president. ‘The total production was 6451 Paiges and Jewetts during January, the Paige company announces. This compares with 2949 Paiges and Jewetts built in January, 1923 and is larger than the previous record breaking month in P; when 5110 cars were bi 1923. The opening of the new Jewett plant during January was responsi- ble for the material increase in pro- duction, stated Mr. Jewett. He also announced a tentative schedule for Production of 6,500 Paiges and Jewetts in February. “This extraordinary January de- mand indicates to us that the new Paige at its new price is as success- ful as the Jewett.” states the Paige president. “The Jewett has settled into a steady healthy growth. With 75,000 Jewetts now in the hands of owners, this Six cylinder car has Proven its value. “At the new price at which we are offering the Paige it is a dis tinctly more attractive motor car than ever before. We have seen our belief in its attraction for the public in the January shipments.” ‘WOBBLE’ AND ITS SOLUTION Connection With the Steering Gear May Hold Trouble. “Did fou ever notice how the front wheels of some automobiles wobble in unison on an uneven pavement?” says A. G. Zeller, presi- dent of the Michigan State Auto- mobile school, Detroit. “This wobble is a most unpleasant thing for the driver who frequently is at a loss to understand what causes it. Frequently it will be found that where there is excessive wobbling of the two front wheels, the steering wheel shows consider- able back lash or lost motion. The reason for this lost motion may le in the steering gear Itself but more often its source will be located be- tween the steering gear jackshaft and the lever that attaches to it. In the modern automobile it is usually fqund necessary to replace’ this lever to remedy“ this trouble. “Or, the play may be located in the ball dnd socket joints at the ends of the drag link or steering gear connecting rod. Usually there ig some means of adjustment pro- vided here. Should there be no me- thod of adjustment it will be neces- sary to replace the parts.” “Occasionally front wheel wobble does not come from play in the steering assembly, but is caused by Joss of caster effect in the front axle, Most cars have the front axle tilted, lower side to front, top side to rear to bring the King pins in the steering knuckles to a_ slight angle from the vertical, The ob- lect is to pit the point of contact be- tween wheel and ground slightly behind the center line of the pivot pin. “Springs that have lost their, re- siliency or springs weakened by broken leaves will not hold the front axle in the correct position and the result may be wheel wobble. The remedy in this case igs new front springs.” It in May, Lowest Storage In Casper Gas, Oils and Grease TIRES TUBES ACCESSORIES Willis Garage 363 S. The only necessary the These is the tire and tires which are car, at a desk. The balloon tire is undoubtedly the most discussed subject ‘in the motor world today. No one other feature evokes so much discussion pro and con, The question as to whether they will take more gas, or cut down your power or make steering harder, brings forth a great variety of opinions—from those who have never driven them. All it takes to make a man a “believer” is to give him a ride on a set of balloons and let him drive the car himself. He soon finds that a car steers just as easy with them as with ordinary tires, has just as much “pep,” has more power and inflinitely more traction and brak- ing power ‘than with the ordinary tire. The first thing that enters a per- son’s mind usually is that they will cut up badly in ruts. That might be true if a person had to travel in the ruts, but the fact Is that you can ride the comb of the rut with- out dropping down into it, or you can climb out of a deep rut any time you want to. Moreover the BALLOON TIRES LEND NEW ATTRACTION TO MOTORING, IS CLAIM full balloons in every respect carry @ name which suggests the most apparent feature of the tires. They are called Michelin “Comfort Cords.” The local dealer, R. M. Mosher, has a stock of these tires on hand to fit the popular size rims and has given a good many people a new idea of the joys to be had with the application of these new tires. soft flexible side walls do not give the resistance that the high infla: tion tire would and consequently will not take as much wear. It is the same proposition as rubbing your knuckles against a plastered a Member of Casper’s Great Automobile Family ON DISPLAY AT The Kumpf Motor Car Co. 316 West Midwest wall or doing the same thing with the palm of your hand. You will rub the skin off your knuckles but not off the palm of your hand. There also seems to be confusion in the minds of some people as to what a balloon tire is. A balloon tire is one that has a large diameter and carries a low air pressure, 20 to 35 pounds. It is built thinner and more flexible than the ordinary cord tire and for the reason that the air space is so much larger, the pressure can be greatly reduced to carry the same load. The tire companies with one ex- ception have made these balloon tires to fit a 20 or 21.inch wheel only, so that in order to enjoy the comfort and” economy of balloon tires a person must change wheels as well as tires and tubes and rims.
