The Minnesota-Michigan game bolds the greatest doubt. The Gophers, by defeating Iowa on Sat- urday 20 to 7, displayed a strength that was unexpected while Michi- gan could only beat the less exper- fenced Wisconsin team, 6 to 3 in a game in which they were outplayed @ good share of the time. In the Minnesota-Iowa game the Gophers’ attack babbled Iowa and brought about a decisive victory for the northmen. Chicago won from Ohio in a game that specialized in long runs. Af- ter getting off to an early etart with three points to the good, the Buckeyes weakened and Gtuenge gathered two touchdowns and field goal for 17 points. The ‘Ohio ne was weak, neutralising the stellar work of their beck field. Northwestern kept its place in the ig ten cellar when defeated by e, 6 to 3. NEW YORK, Nov. 19.—(United ‘Press.)}—Jack Renault, the Canadian heavyweight wants to Dempsey for the world’ ship, and if he has an even break in luck, he may get a shot at the title, Renault, is, at the present time, anything but the logical contender for Dempsey's crown, but he wi!) make himself one because he is go- ing about it the right way. After knocking out Floyd John. son, Renault said he was willing to fight Harry Wills, Tom Gibbons and Luts Firpo to prove his right to meet Lempsey. Leo Flynn, Renault's manager, is one of the shrewdest managers in the business and he is also one of its most fluent oraters. Flynn has done # lot of talking in advancing the claims of other heavyweights, but he seems to be sincere in his willingness to put Renault through the real test. Renault now is not a great fighter. He may develop into one because he cannot help but improve himself by fighting top-notchers. The Canadian in his present form ,seems only to lack the ve spirit of a na- tural fighter. It is said of him that he is a “front runner,” but he showed no signs of being timid in the Johnson fight. When allowed to fight his own way or when he can force his oppon- ent to fight “his way, Renault is a good fighter. He can box and he can hit. His punching is accurate and well timed, even if it does lack the power of Dempsey, Gibbons und Will's. Renault's worst fault lies tn his tendency toward too much precau- tion. He prefers to play safe in- stead of charging in aggressively when he gets an, opening. Had he been a great fighter he would have stopped Johnson many rounds, be- fore the fifteenth. He passed up many opportunities because he pre- ferred to stay back and counter Johnson when he tore into him. He cannot do that against Gib. bons, Wills or Firpo. Only a rush- ing, charging fighter of the Demp sey type will beat the three leading contenders for the title. Renault wou'd not last five rounds if he tried to stand back and smack Gibbons, Wills or Firpo when they came into him. One good crack from any one of them would remove all chances for Renault to return a punch. One thing Js certain, and it will be a big help to him, Renault will not be overmatched. If Leo Flynn wants to match Renault with Gibbons, Wt'ls and Firpo, it is a‘cinch that Flynn believes in his fighter. Flynn never will knock over a big money Prospect for a little ready dough. Floyd Johnson was one of the most promising young heavyweights to come up in four years, but he is pt the chance for victory was gone, the crowd, angered by the de- .
