Whitney, Calif., (By mounted courier and telegraph.}—Kenneth Harlan has won “The Virginian’s” spurs. It was a sore and badly shaken Ken- neth who dropped today from the top side of a sweating and wind- dlown cayuse before the eyes of a Gritical group of real cow-punchers. Harlan had been astride a tough mputhed, bucking buckskin cow pony for two hours without once “palling leather.” For one whose previous experience had been along the bridle paths of New York's city parks astride a smooth-gaited Ken- tucky thoroughbred, it was no mean feat. The “hard bitten” cattlemen, who have been pasturing their herds for the past 25 years in these mountains, have been openly chuckling at the young star, who ts to play the title role in Owen Wister’s classic story of the west. They wagered among themselves that he could not stick on one of the broncos of the “string” he was given to ride. Today, when he had finished a long ride over dangerous trails and reigned up in front of the corral, “Iron Hook" Jameson, spat copious- ly and remarked “He's green but he can stand the gaft.” ‘This was high praise, indeed, from “Iron Hook” and Kenneth emiled his appreciation. He admitted after- wards he had been thrown twice. The Forman-Schulberg camp is located nearly two miles above sea level and is at the one spot in Calli- fornia where’ cattle are herded as they were in the days of the Texas longhorn. Director Tom Forman choso this location for the filming of “The Virginian’ because of the presence here of thousands of head of steers as wild as native deer. It was near the site of the camp, in the vicinity of Mt. Whitney, that members of one of the last remain- ing bands of outlaws in Southern California were either killed or riven across the range into Nevada. “The Virginian” will start a four- @ay run at the America tomorrow. HAROLD LLOYD'S NEW LEADING LADY & HIT Everyone fs asking about Jobyna Ralston, who makes her first ap- pearance as Haro'd Lioyd’s leading lady in his latest Pathecomedy, “Why Worry,” which opens at the Rialto Friday. Her shadow ts quite the daintiest and most petite of any that has flitted before our vision in many a day, and while we mourn RIALTO STARTING FRIDAY Rocking the world with a rip-roaring riot of risi- bilities. Let Lloyd tickle in it beaed on personal experiences) that is speaking in a general way. Many of the scenes are of a charac- ter which will appear natural to newlyweds and if they have a sense of humor they will enjoy them to the utmost. Therein also Mes the explanation of the making of the picture, “Love Is An Awful Thing,” it was made by people with a sense of humor for those similarly blessed. “THUNDERING CANN” AT WYOMING THEATER Snapping the ashes off a cigar- ette with the cracking lash of a big bull whip is some little fear. Only two vaudeville performers have ever done it in this country— and Thomas Santschi certainly boasts the record of being the only picture star able to perform the odd feat. Santschi, one of the big cast sup- porting J. Warren Kerrigan, and Anna. @ Nilsson in ‘Thundering the Universal-Jewel spec- tacle of Java, directed by Harry Garson, portrays a tropic planter, the loss of Mildred Davis, our grief 1s softened, for it gives us a new Personality to study and deight in. The life history of Joby, as every- one calls her at the Hal Roach studio, started in the town of East |Inttsburgh, snuggle@ away in the mountains of Tennessee. Jobyna ; Was named after the noted actress, Jobyna Howland, who is greatly ad- mired by the Ralstons of Tennessee. Jobyna’s earliest longing was for the stage, and when she was little |T™ore than 15 her mother took her |to New York to give her a chance at fame. There they met Ned Way- | burn, the noted dancing master and Stage producer. He took Jobyna | under his care, and after developing |her into an excellent’ dancer, ob- | tained for her a part jn George M. | Cohan's “Two Little Girls in Blue.” The lure of California and the | Screen soon overtook Jobyna, and | it was not long before she was in | Los Angeles, looking over the mo- tion picture studios. She took pot luck with the thousands of other girls who aspired to fame on the shadow stage. She played extra bits in a couple of pictures and was then selected to play opposite Max Linder, in his burlesque version of Douglas Fairbanks’ ‘I'he Three Musketeers.” Hal Roach saw her on the screen in this picture and was so impressed with her work that hoe engaged her as leading lady for his single ree! comedies. She held that job for six months, when Harold Lloyd decided he needed two leading ladies and engaged Mildred Davis for life, the contract being signed, sealed and de lvered with a marriage license. “LOVE 1S AN AWFUL THING,” NEWLYWEDS pon—the planters carry it as the A peculiar thing about Owen Moore's next picture which bears the coisa tin a 2 ih Mae AI rather cynical title “Love Is Anj — Awful Thing” ts that the most im- ; . portant factora in its writing, atrect.| Break a Cold Right Up with ing and acting, are newlyweds. “ ,, Wa Victor Heerman, who has been} “Pape's Cold Compound married less than a year, wrote the story and directed it.
