The most ancient highway in North America is said to be the New Mexico section of the Na- tional Old Trails Road, Accord- ing to Judge J, M. Lowe, presi- dent of the National Old Trails Road association, this section of the great highway {s the oldest road established on the North American continent, It extends from Socorro to Santa Fe, about one hundred and fifty miles, Don Juan Onate, a Spaniard, who was governor of New Spain (which comprehended all of Mexico) in the fifteenth . century, was the first man to establish a road in America. - Long years before the Pilgrim Fathers landed at Plymouth ock. The room pak ae a Stockmen Lose Money DOUGLAS.—Stockmen and farm- ers in this stetion who have shipped their cattle to the Omaha market recently are not at all satisfied with the results obtained. All are anx- fous for legislation tending to lower freight rates which are now eating up not only the profits in the live- stock business, but ere throwing the stockmen iuito the red promiscuous- ly. One man who shipeed a bunch of cows received $22.45 per head. The cows cost him $65 per head three years ago. Another farmer sold a cow for $13 net, the cost of the animal being $140.
