SUNDAY, MARCH 11, 1923. VIENNA RETURNS TO NORMALCY IN GHEATCOMEBACK Most Surprising Economic De- velopment Is Ease of Aus- tria’s Adaptation. By J. W. T. MASON (Written for the United Press.- The most surprising economic de- velopment in Europe since the-war 1s the ease with which Austria is coming back to normal conditions. The Aus trian paper money has been stabilized at approximately 69,000 crowns to the collar, the normai value of a crown being nearly 20 cents. Prices in Austria are now adjusting theniselves to the new vatue of the crown’ and living no longer js abnorm- ally cheap for foreigners. “World levels have not quite beerf reached in pri@es, but the proportion ts as five to seven. That ts to say five dollars in Austria represents a purchasing pow- er of about seven dollars in the world markets. The League of Nations has com- pleted arrangements for a loan to Austria and a‘l reparations charges have been suspended for a number of years to €ome. Austria, consequent: ly, has no impediments on the road to complete recovery. Austrian prices are higher than German prices and {t costs more to live in Vienna than in Berlin.. The Germans are importing goods from Austria and are selling them cheaper than the prices charged in Austria. Vienna Coming Back , Vienna is coming back to her for mer position.as the financial centre of all southeastern Europe. The fre- quent references in the past to Vien- na being a useless municipality for a country Austria are being proven to be false. On the contrary, Vienna {s saving Austria. Al! the machinery for international finance and international commerce exists in Vienna and in no other southeast European capital. The Aus- trians have been able to capitalize this fact ‘to their permanent adyant- age. Much poverty still exists in Aus- tria, but side by side with {t fs an extraordinary amount of industr'al. activity. The Austrians’ have shown great initiative, for instance; in elec: trifying. their main railway that runs ‘The ‘oad is now alf compteted, the power vn from waterfalls which the route. ‘ing in Coal The saying in coal, which Austria lias tg import, is enormous. But, more than that, the work disproves the charge that the Austrians have taken their defeat in the war lying down. ‘The inefficiency of the government telegraph and telephone systems is now being recognized by the govern- ment and a movement is under way to abolish government ownership. An English syndicate is prepared ake an offer to the state for tak- over the telegraph and telephone lines, operating them more effective- ly than in the past, and paying a handsome royaity to the state in re- turn. u No Time for Politics The Austrians are paying scarcely any attention to international politics. so small as the post-war The agitators who want a union with Germany are without hearers.
