THE RIGHT OF THE : SICK TO CET WELL STILL STANDS UNCHALLENGED Article 4, By B. P. PALMER, President, Palmer School. Answer to Articles Published in Leslit’s Weekly. ORGANIZED 5000 YEARS, AND LOOK! Nature abhors a vacuum. Physicians have beer vitally interested in public health, in an organized manner, for 5,000 years. With ions of men, millions of minds and millions of money; cutting bodies both dead and alive; with everything at their command that science and invention can command; with laws privately espoused and publicly legislated in their cont~ol; with public prosecutors at their beck and call; with the public mind educated to medicine and surgery for generations —they should have by this time learned how to cure the sick. Assuming their mo- tives sincere, their educations complete, their ability, unquestioned; their arts in- fallible, then we must assume that they have been ffetting the sick well.. Getting them well, there is nobody sick, therefore, no c&ll fr a chiropractor or any other drugiess method. There is no vacuum, no need or nefessity for such as us. « BYWAYS FILLED WITH AILING AND, INCOMPETENT. But, is that true? Have they been doing op? | Everywhere the cities are filled with millions of grunting and groaning invalids; cripples line our streets; one operation requires another; new medicines come and go faster than fashions. Our private and public hospitals and state institutions ar¢ filled with the sick and insane, idiotic and weak-minded; and more hospitals are being built every year to further drain the public pocketbook. These people have all first been patients of some “com- petent” physician or physicians, and that they are “competent” goes without saying. Don’t they admit it? Is it not further true that ft has been buf ‘the last twenty years that legis- latures have seen fit to take the public monopoly from them and let others have a try? The sick have run the gauntlet of “specialists” to the limits of their purses and still they pay for help, aid. They plead, search, demang that something still be found for that which will get them well. The great public ‘mind is resenting in no uncertain language the fact that those rights which ARE HIS have been robbed from him, stealthily, have been sneaked from him in the guise of legal “public welfare.” His resentment takes the form of trying any new method HE sees fit. Does medical, os- teopathic or even Chiropractic legislation thus b¢st serve him? IS IT FINAL WORD? Is the “theory” and “practice of medicine’ the first, last and final word on life and death, health and sickness? Has no American citizen a right to think or are all thoughts worth thinking now wrapped up withih the calf-bound medical books? Is all wisdom within medical minds? Then, why does it fail in millions of every kind of a case? If the cause of disease was found thousands of years ago, or, but yesterday, why resort to a constant and persistent change of prescriptions day after day, week after week, until the patient dies in despair or gives up,in disgust and is com- pelled to resort to some one of the many rapiess metho: f If medicine is that successful cure-: why plead with private individuals for millions more of money to stamp out the :dreaded “white-plague” (tuberculosis), admitting that it is growing by leaps and bbunds each year? Why not take that money and cure a few? AND SURGERY If medicine has failed, is surgery the cure-all? Why, if a cause of disease has been found, is it necessary to cut out the diseased part? Why not cure it by curing its cause; reversing the process and) getting them well? Is all this but a de- signed attempt to monopolize the rights the many in the minds of the few? Is this a government of monarchs or a govesnment of those governed? Is humanity pest served when the rights of kings take-precedence over the rights of universal choice? WHO KNOWS BESTS? And, who knows better than the person who is sick whether they are well or not? Whose judgment does the docter rely upon for the symptoms, better than that of the patient? And, if the sick one runs the gauntlet, tries all and all fails, and he tries Chiropractic and gets welly who knows better and who is to say him nay? Since when has this government arisen above those governed? Since when has a private group on any subject bepn given dictatorial power to compel those governed to think as they think? Drs. J.
