J., ‘April. 29. Willie Ritchie of San Francisco was saved by referee from a knockout at the hands of Benny Leonard, lightweight champion, in the eighth and final round of their fight last night. Ritchie was on the ropes when the match stopped. Referee Slim Brennan stopped the fight a minute and a half after the eighth round started, when Ritchie was helpless on the ropes. Except in the third round, when Ritchie made a rally and forced the champion backward around the ring, Leonard had the better of the bout all the way. Ritchie’s gameness was the only thing which kept him bat- tling. With the remarkable courage, the former champion took ali the punishment which Leonard gave him. Leonard went at him cooly and be- gan to tantalize him with stiff jabs to the face. Ritchie used all the de- fense and tricks he knew to stop this. Leonard speeded up his punches, an the former champion imagined that two or three boxers were directing blows at his head. A stiff left jab sent Ritchie’s head back, ond when Leonard followed up this blow with a terrific right smash to the jaw, Ritchie’s knees sagged and he went to the floor. As Brennan tolled the nine seconds over him there was a forlorn look of helplessness on Ritchie’s face. He staggered to his feet and Leonard again tore in with rights and lefts. Ritchie tried in vain to block the} onslaught of blows, but once again Benny’s driving attack broke down his guard and again he went down. Grasping the ropes to regain his feet, tlie referee storneci en’ the Bent ANLLY IN FOURTEENTH WINS MISKE DECISION TULSA, Okla.
