. AY, JAN. 22, 1918 OMPENSATION 5 GRANTED IN _ DA FNTALITIES Awards to Workers During: Year Show Coal Business Most Haz- ardous Occupation and Oil Industry Second State industrial accident insurance was paid to the dependents of 24 men in Wyoming in 191g who met death while on duty in the various occupations which come under the provisions of the Workmen’s Com- pensation Act. Sixteen of these fa- talities occurred in the coal industry. These figures are given in the an- nual report of Miss Eunice G. Ander- son, chief -clerk of the workmen’s compensation department at Chey- enne. ; The remaining seven fatalities oc- eurred in railroad construction, which recorded two fatilities; -in torpedo wotks, which recorded three deaths. and one fatality each in an electric light plaht, a manufacturer of oil well supplies, and an oil drilling industry. The report points out the advisabi ity of extending the terms of the in- dustrial accident insurance law to in- clude cowpunchers. It shows that riding the range in Wyoming ‘is the second most hazardous occupation ir the state. In the year there were 382 accidents to men on the range, but no awards were made because the law does not reach out to them. 405 Mine Accidents Coal mining is listed as the most hazardous occupation in the state There were 405 accidents from coal! mining in the year and $63,000 war paid in compensation. The coal companies paid 47 pet cent of the tax, and their employer received 68 per cent of the disburse- ments on account of accidents. Printing shops and newspaper pub- lishers paid $1,114.80 into the state fund during the year. One accident occurred for which an award of $35 was made. Ice cream manufacturers, ice cut- ters, lapidarists and laundries paid in a total of nearly $2,500 to the fund, and there was not an accident reported for their industries. Plumbing, phosphate companies and tunnel constructionists also paid in a neat little sum, without their em- ployers reporting a single accident. Torpedo Work Hazardous Torpedo.works, on the other hand. paid in only $114-86;-while their em- ployes received awards for damages to the extent-of $2,750. Water works companies paid close to $1,500 in premiums, and had not a single accident reported among their workers. Bridge construction, house moving and grading were apparently safe oc- cupations, for there were no acci- dents reported for the year. Oil companies paid in $55,000 for the fund and their employes _ re- ceived damages to the extent $10,000. The report shows @ number of pe- culiar accidents, and a few highly tragical ones. In one case a man was caught: between wires and _ electro- cuted. In another, a man was tamp- ing a shot and was struck in the eye in such a way as to cause instant «death, The city of Cheyenne has the dis- tinction! of being the only municipal- ity in the state which has failed to come thru with its tax, and is listed delinquent. PRINT PAPER IS STILL BANE OF THE PUBLISHER Restrictions on the use of print paper has again been felt in The Tribune office, and in order to com ply with the demands of the manu- facturers The Tribune is compelled to print eight-page editions in two , sections of four pages each until we have used up the supply of four- page paper rolls now on hand. When ordering print paper about six months ago, the management did not forsee the phenomenal growth of The Tribune, ahd hence laid in 7m over-supply of four-page rolls for the smaller paper. Before we secure ahother shipment of paper. it is necessaty that We usé up the stock now on hand, and to do this it is hed. essary to print thé paper in two four- page sections tc usé up the surplus; This will causé a slight disarrange- ment in the ads and news matter temporarily. However, you will find all The Tribune features contained in’ the paper, but for the present they will not be in their customary places. i, =, POULTRY SHOW AT LANDER The Sixth Annual County Poultry Show will be held in Lander on Fri- day, Januaty 31. The show is a lit- tle later this year because of outside shows interfering and because the county agent has been away at annu- al conference. 4 —= = zs ‘ Diplomatic. McKendty wit tiessed enough of the wat to gain the title of a veteran and in a letter to his mother, Mts. Jolh McKendty, re- lates some intetesting expetiénces. His letter follows: Tours, France, Dec. 20, 1918. Dear Mother:— They have eased up somewhat on a few of my expefiences. I would have written sooner but I expected to be on the road home by this time. But T will leave this until the last and will begin at the first. We left San Francisco August 15, for New York. It took ue five days to make the trip. Jt certainly was aj wonderful trip across the states. The veople treated us royally. I think we arrived in New York about the 21st. T saw quite a little of New York City while in Camp Mills. There are some naghificeht sights there. We got on the boat the 81st and set sail the 1st of September. We were of a British vessel with twelve othets. Two de- \stroyers and @ cruiser convoyed us. We, were there about ten days and then went to Doulevant. Now is when the, sad part of the story comes.
