__WEDNESDAY, JAN. 22, 1919 WEIGHT SCHEME FOR AUTO TAXES MEETS FAVOR OF MANY OFFICIALS $30,000 Would Be Real- ized for Good Roads Here if Bill Passes the State Legislature A measure which has the enthusi- astic support of good roads advocates over the State, and which will revo- lutionize the collection of licenses and taxes on automobiles, is soon to be presented to the Legislature after it has been passed upon and approved by legislative experts and the boards of county commissioners thruout the State. If the bill passes, it is estimated that Natrona county will realize in the neighborhood of $30,000 per year from auto taxes and licenses, all of which must be spent upon the roads of the county, the city also receiving its just portion which must likewise be spent upon the streets of the city. Instead of issuing licenses’ at a flat rate of $5.00 per car as at pres- ent, the bill will provide that licenses and tax will be levied according to the weight of the car, which will dis- tribute the burden of taxation equit- ably, and make car owners pay a cording to the wear and tear their vars inflict upon the highways of the State. As an instance, it is estimated that a Ford car weighs approximately 1500 pounds. At the rate of $1.00 per hundred, a Ford owner will pay $15.00 a year for the first three years when the levy will be reduced to 50 cents a hundred, making the Ford owner pay $7.50 a year, figuring that} his car has depreciated in value one- half after three years’ use. The owners of cars in the class of the light Buicks, Dodges, Dorts, light Reo cars, Chevrolets, tetc., welghing in the neighborhood of 2500 pounds-will be taxed $25, while the Packard, Cadil- lac, Hudson and cars of this type will put up from $30 to $45 or $50 per year, according to the weight of their cars. After the car owner secures his license tag, according to the proposed | bill, he will be exempt from further taxation, and the assessor will be-re- lieved of the responsibility of search- ing out the owners of cars, and there {will be no way in which the tax dodger can escape bearing his just portion of taxation, being compelled to contribute his just share of the burden of keeping up the roads of Phe county. Sponsors of tho bill contend that the passage of the bill will not mean an increase in taxation for the car ‘owner tho has secured his license overy.year and honestly turned in his just valuation for his car to the county assessor, but will compel pay- ment from the tax dodger and the shirker, who use the county roads and néver contribute one penny toward their maintenance. The bill will provide for a special rate for freighters and the heavy duty trucks will also be taxed accord- ing to their weight, based upon the damage which they inflict upon the roads, ‘The bill is patterned after the laws in effect in most of the Eastern ‘States, and in five of the Western States, where it is said to have worked admirably, proving a great incentive to the building and main- tenance of good roads. The measure is said to have the fupport of the governor, secretary of state and practically all of the state officials, who are pleased with the feature which provides that the money will come from the car owner going directly into the road fund of the various counties, to be used im- mediately upon the roads in the dis- trict where the money is collected. Supporters of the bill appeared be- fore the board of county commission- ers yesterday, and Chairman Veitch and Commissioner Griffith are study- ing the provisions of the bill as ap- plied to this county, and will prob- ably lend their support. If the bill becomes a law it will not go into effect until January 1, 1920. ——__—_.___ , OFFICIAL PROCEEDINGS, BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS January 9th, 1919 Qffice of the County Clerk, Casper, Wyo., Jan. 9, 1919.
