Seven Thousand Acres in Cali- | fornia to be Planted With Eucalyptus. Cheago, Dec. 5.—The Atchison, To- peka & Santa Fe railway proposes to grow its own railway ties. To that end a ranch of 10,000 acres has been purchased in San Diego county, California, and 7,000 acres will be planted in eucalyptus trees. The re maining 3,000 acres will be used as an experimental station and serve as an object lesson to the farmers of that vicinity. This step has been taken because of the increasing fear that before many years the native timber of the United States will be exhausted. It has been demonstrated that wood of the eucalyptus tree will outlast any other when used for piles, ties and bridge work. While the planting of trees has been started it will be from fifteen to eighteen years before any of them will be large enough to cut, At that age each tree can be cutinto two ties and the increase from then on is more rapid. With {ts present mileage the Santa Fe uses 3 million aew tles yearly, which in the fiscal year ending June 30 last, cost $2,393,973. — I ts eatl- mated, however, that at the time set for the maturity the eucalyptus ranch will produce each year 7 mil- lon ties, giving @ surplus over pres- -—— | County court met Monday of last ent needs o! 4 million a year. week with Judges Harper, Smith and The Son of a Late Governor of | Hyde, County Clerk Weeks and Sher- Missouri Committed {ff Beard in attendance, and the fol- | lowing proceedings were had: Suicide. Budapest, Dec.—The Nap, newspaper of this clty, publishes a sensational story to the effect that an Anarchist plot upon the lives of Emperor Francis Joseph and Arch- duke Francis Ferdinand, the heir to the throne, has been discovered. The store would appear to befound- ed on the fact that the Hungarian police were informed recently that four widely known Anarchists had left Genevafor Hungary with the object of making an attempt upon the life of Francis Ferdinand. The police were instructed to watch the frontier closely, but so far as is known no Anarchists have yet enter- ed Hungerian territory. Tn answer to an inquiry concerning the reported Anarchist plot against the lives of Emperor Francis Joseph and Archduke Francis Ferdinand, {t was officially declarsd here that the government had no information whatever to bear out the suggestion that the Anarchists who are suppos- ed to have lefs Geneva for Hungary had any designs upon the emperor or the heir to the throne, and the idea of any such attempt was dis- credited.
