FILLEY WILL CONTROL. na Helps “De Ole Man.” ST. LOUIS STANDS BY THE BOSS. Kanese City Times. A great many Missouri republicans would like to have people believe that the rearing which “old m-n} Filiey is indulging onis+ simply the Gi-appointed grumblinga of an old cain who is politically dead; but they that is what ie troubling them truth of the matter is that Filey feels go strong in his present po-i- tion, that be can not cuntain bims !f The old fellow sees that in the near furvre be will be able to scream: “We've got em!” again Every poli Gcian in Miesouri. who has paid any attention at all to the matter knows that Filley will control the next republican State convention. Keres Limself, little as he knows about polities of any kind, mu-t know that the old mav’s day to shout will come &3 soon asthe republican party of Miseouri meets in convention again “There is one thing about Filley,” Py é.d Major Warcer the other day- j “he always comes up toa convention wth St. Louis b-hind him, and m ‘biog on earth can get bis votes # ow him.” Major Warver bas bad @X perience, aud knows whereof he fyenks, Not only will Filley bave 8» Louis bebind bim again, but it will be the biggest St Louis delega tion that was ever seen in a repub!i can ccnvention. This is what is troubling the enti-Filleyites At the present ratio of representa tiou the increased republican vote at the last election will give 251 more @clegates in the next republican State convention than there in the last. There was a great dem cratic v>te last election and the republicans dit not come anywhere near carrying the state, but at the same time there was a great increase in the republi can vote aleo, and this increase is what is worrying Filley’s enemies. The increase was largely a Filley increase—that is, it was largely an increas3 in the city of St Louis, where Filley is supreme. Filley’s © gsnization may or may not bave b en responsible for this, but the frct remains that there was this increase, and its effect will be felt in the next republican convention O/ the 251 additional delegates, 150 of them will be from the city of St Louis, which is but another way of eaying that they will be for Filles §-et, last and all the time; for wh le Dick Kerens may buy the favor ot Mark Hanna, he could not get a single delegate out of St. Louis if everything he has depended upon it. Tis additional St. Louis vote will render it impossible for the old men's enemies to get the convention away from him. The St. Louis vote aloue will ba one fourth of the total _vote of the convention, and it will i not bea bit of trouble with all the dissents and soreheads within the ranks of the republican party of the state, for him to get enough oth+r votes to control the convention ab- colutely. Filley is so sure that he is very independent. He is swinging bis whp around and letting its lash sting whom it may, but in this seem ingly promiscious cutting and slash ing he is ovly attacking the men whom he will not veed in his next Gght. HOW FILLEY AND WARNER STAND It will be voticed that be has said ao bing about Warner and many Others about whom he could tell 8 me very interesting stories if he wera so disposed. Under the guise of tearing and rendiog everything in éigdt the old man is going to work to build up a new machine. Hanpa be knows is the weakest man in the republican party, and so after Hanna he goes without saying much agaiust McKinley. Many of the old wheel | horses in his party in different coun-| lies he knows have been mixed up! iv so many crooked deals that they! wo lopger have any standing, and. bave more enemies than friends: so) after them wit overlooking the main chance. Filley’s friends claim that the! republican increase at the last elee | tion in every case was in Filley | strongholds, and that he will have a) Se SBN TIERTE he goes—but Republican Revolt Against Han- koow that such is not the case, and} The! walk away inthe next convention, | old maid.
